    "If I had a spirit, I felt it fly out of me then. And if Brian had a spirit, it flew hand in hand with mine, lifting above the couch, passing through the roof, hovering in the black and measureless air that blanketed the house where Coach once lived."
    "It was a light that shone over our faces, our wounds and scars. It was a light so brilliant and white it could have beamed from heaven, and Brian and I could have been angels, basking in it. But it wasn't, and we weren't."
    (from the novel)

      A part of me wishes they'd used this monologue at the end of the film instead, but it also would hurt so much to see Brian and Neil have this one moment of quiet, of solace taken from them how it is in the novel when Neil gives us this monologue.

    Wonderful scene, in many ways we don't get the closure we want, they don't get to confront their abuser or bring him to justice, he's long gone. There's no sense that due to this everything will now be alright but they've found one another and now know the truth. There's hope for them both.

    I really liked this movie. The other boy who thought he was abducted by aliens but learns the awful truth at the end. There is no happy ending or closure but he did find a kindred spirit in the other boy...such is life :(

    • @aaronmichael1201
      @aaronmichael1201 8 лет назад +60

      +theunraveler That's why I love this ending. There is no happy ending, no real closure. There is nothing they could do, as Neil says. What's done is done. But there is still a glimmer of hope at the end. They both have begun coming to terms with what they went through, even Neil, who spent the entirety of the story believing what he had with Coach to be something good and romantic. Brian finally remembered what he had blacked out for ten years, and Neil finally realized what he had with Coach wasn't beautiful. Things are not good. They are not happy... But there is still a bit of hope left. They will be able to grow past this, likely with help from each other.
      Such a perfect film. Purely perfect.

      TBH, I think Neil's character is the only one to enjoy it because of his neglected childhood. He was the only one with fond memories of the abuse

    There will never, ever be a more perfect use of a Sigur Ros song in a film ever, ever, ever again.
    Actually. Correction. I don't think there will even be a more perfect use of ANY song in a film ever, ever again.

    I recently read the book. In most cases the book is always superior to the movie. In this case, both movie and novel are tragically beautiful and heart wrenching. However, I recommend reading the book for more character depth that doesn't translate to the movie. In the book, both of Neil's friends, Wendy and Eric, have a bigger part with more character depth that didn't make it to the movie.

    • @aaronmichael1201
      @aaronmichael1201 7 лет назад +12

      Eric is an absolutely wonderful character in the book. In the film, we see what a nice guy he is when it comes to his friendship with Neil and Brian, particularly Brian.
      But book Eric was such a wonderful character. Flawed, but one of the kindest, most genuine friends I've ever seen in a novel.

    И пока мы сидели и слушали колядовщиков, мне хотелось сказать Брайану, что теперь все кончено и все будет хорошо. Но это была ложь, к тому же я все равно не мог говорить. Я хочу, чтобы у нас был какой-то способ вернуться назад и исправить прошлое. Но его не было. Мы ничего не могли сделать. Так что я просто молчал и пытался телепатически передать, как я сожалею о том, что произошло. И я подумал обо всем горе, печали и ёбанных страданиях в мире, и мне захотелось сбежать. Я всем сердцем желал, чтобы мы просто оставили этот мир позади. Воспариться , как два ангела в ночи, и волшебным образом... исчезнуть

    Beautiful song for a beautiful movie. The first time I saw the ending the music was familiar, cause I knew Sigur ros, but when I read, that it is indeed Sigur ros I was happy, cause they make wonderful music. And to be honest the ending of this movie made me crying like a little girl.

    I read the novel, it ends with Brian snapping out of it as the family discovers them entering the house. At least the ending to the novel was more bitter sweet and suspenseful than this.

      I thought the family was going to enter

    • @SteveGarza
      @SteveGarza 8 лет назад +9

      I just read the novel. I felt so sad that they felt so exposed when the family entered. Their private grief suddenly exposed as they face what had happened to them. Such a beautifully tragic ending.

    • @aaronmichael1201
      @aaronmichael1201 7 лет назад +15

      I think both endings are brilliant. But I feel this one is superior. The writing in the novel's last moment is impeccable, unforgettable, and brilliant.
      But I love that this ending in the film allows Brian and Neil to experience the calm after the storm for a short while longer. This moment is a major, traumatic turning point in both of their young lives. Brian finally knows what happened to him, as horrific and terrible as it was, and Neil is finally coming to terms with the fact that what he had with coach wasn't love; it was abuse.
      I think Araki made a very sensitive decision to allow these characters to sit quietly in the moment a while longer, whereas in the novel, they have that moment ripped from them when the owners of the house come home and catch them.
