Have you ever enjoyed a TV show or a movie? Most people have. Hollywood in general has been an integral part of everyone’s daily life since the days of silent movies. We care about those who have entertained and comforted us since the 1920’s. People laughed and loved Shirley Temple and Mickey Rooney through the horrible Depression; actors entertaining the troops in WW2; newly invented and mass-produced TV’s bringing people like Milton Berle, Lucille Ball, and Jackie Gleason to our living rooms; Ed Sullivan ignoring racial politics and bringing black singers and singing groups to national attention; the 1970’s nostalgia for the 1950’s that Americans needed after the dark time’s of the ‘60’s, with Happy Days and Laverne and Shirley; important societal discussions taking place thanks to All in the Family, The Jeffersons, Good Times, Maude, and MASH. Those are just a few of the examples as to how present and how personal were the creative geniuses who worked out of Hollywood. I would say that we care much more about what has been happening to some of our favourite celebrities than if we were hearing about Elon Musk’s house burning down. Even then certain holy books encourage us not to wish evil upon our enemies. If anything celebrities bring more context to these horrible fires because we’re also made more aware of the losses of all the non-celebrities living there. We’ll remember these fires long after they’re put out but the same can’t be said for many other natural disasters that have come and gone (except by the victims of those other disasters).
