Very few will appreciate the significance of this. Songhai was one of Africa's most powerful empires. It was not destroyed, just temporarily interrupted. Thank you, History Fox. Your work is gold. Hush-in the palace of Songhai Askia’s muse moves words, and the spirits of men rise. The king sits on a humble throne where scribes have etched his name in stone. The last of day’s rays pour down the painted roof. Colors splash through, only to puddle atop the marble floor. Dressed fine, gilded in gold, the loyal of the land, young and old sit ready to enter a story the prophecies foretold!
No. Sadly these Sahel states have very limited resources, Songhai became an empire and rich because its rulers monopilized so much of the trade with Africa and rest of the world.. via the desert. Today no one cares about crossing the desert, because they can buy and sell goods by flying and shipping much more easily. Today Sahel states have some interesting mines, and tons of people with low education, poor agricultural land and a great deal of imminent political and reglious instability. The best outcome for these states would be to be annexed, or better loosly federated (since we do not want to create majorities with poorly educated muslims) to their coastal neighours such as Nigerian, Ghana or Ivory Coast for example.
Talk your talk. You don’t need no disclaimer. As African, our struggles against imperialism, colonialism and racism will continue and we will be victorious
While I appreciate you informing people about the Songhai Empire, your little comments about hoping they dont bring back slavery are completely absurd. The only places that have brought back slavery in modern times are countries destroyed by western forces, aka Libya. Also, the implication that old African style slavery was similar to western chattel slavery is laughable and ahistorical. Slaves in Africa were still treated like human beings; their children were not born as slaves, they could free themselves in some way, and some gained respect and titles in society even while being a slave. I have to say, you Europeans inserting these little dismissive, racist quips as if black people are naturally backwards is why I don't believe it's possible for us to have a communist movement with you all. The patronizing never ends. I suggest thinking harder about the implications of your personal commentary in the future.
I'm sorry I didn't express myself well enough there and left too much room of interpretation. It was not my intent to say anything about slavery coming back, I simply wanted to state an obvious difference between Songhai and AES and with that I wanted to emphasise the huge historical and geopolitical difference between the empire and the alliance. I also agree with you, that the situation in Libya is the result of the NATO intervention in 2011, I also made a video about Gaddafi where I talk about this injustice there. I also didn't compare the different versions of slavery, there were surely huge differences depending on era and geography, but it's sure that slavery was there and it's good that it's over no matter where. I think it's a harsh and unreasonable statement that I added any kind of racist or patronizing undertone, I assume I either expressed myself not clear enough or you intentionally read something into my words that wasn't there.
@historyfox There are many more differences between the Songhai Empire and modern day Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso. There are many other ways to emphasize that difference. It's just strange to mention that specifically and also your wording made it sound as if you were proposing a possible future, not making a quip not meant to be taken seriously. I'm sorry for you feeling my comment is too harsh, but I'd rather be honest about how this comes off to black people who support communism. I do enjoy your channel and wouldn't have said anything if I didn't care.
I think your response was a little harsh given that you made a racist statement in it, the "you Europeans" bit is racist and you made a lot of straw men arguments against the video. An example is when you claimed she compared modern slavery with the older trans Sahara trade which she didn't do.
You heard of Neo-colonialism? European powers controlling the lives and economy of the region even though the region is suppose to be "Free". You probably havnt heard of it. Because people like you pretend it doesn't exist. Which is why you jumped to the most extreme example like slavery. Even though the west finance warlords in Congo to force people to work for free so that the west can have cheap or free resources. So even slavery isn't a ridiculous idea. But let me guess, that's not happening either...right?
Seriously. This is why I always avoid learning about African history from Europeans. They always, always try to make us sound like we need guidance to not be barbaric, while they invented the most barbaric form of slavery of all human history 🙄 The self-delusion and patronizing is unreal
I think I expressed myself not very well there. I didn't want to say they get the slave trade back, I just wanted to state a difference between Songhai and AES. Sorry if I left too much room for interpretation.
IKR, many Europeans don't like these kind of news but thank you beautiful lady for bringing this up!

Thank you! Great poem 👑

thank you
Great work @historyfox, you are not African but your work says all about you.
The SHONGHAI AND MALIAN EMPIRES WILL BE RE -BIRTHED THROUGH THE " SEEDLING AES."
The Songhai empire is being rebirthed
Let's all remember Sundiata Keïta and Mansa Musa. Mandé, Songhaï, Dahomey and so forth...One West Africa from Cabo Verde to Niger.
Morroco invaded Tomboctou not the whole empire. They were the first to have firearms and because their weapons, they attacked Tomboctou
There is no similarity between the Songhai empire and the AES-the former was imperialist the AES in anti-colonial.
Interesting. But why not. :)

@john-paulwalsh2904 funny how sensitive you can be considering all the past and present harms europeans have done to Africans. Its really pathetic
New wagadu empire rather
They really are worried about the slave trade come back what a joke 😂
