REWINDING BACK TO MY ONE-YEAR LOC JOURNEY | Lots of Pics!

- Hey y'all! In this video, I share my the first year of my loc journey, which began in March 2014. The thumbnail pic is me in 2018, not after the first year. :-)
I started my locs with comb coils, and everything took off from there. If you're ready to start locs, I hope this video gives you some insight into the highs and lows of starter locs.
You'll hear how I washed my locs for the very first time, how long it took my locs to start "budding," when I did my first braidout, how I retwisted and maintained my baby locs, when I noticed growth, and more. Tons of pics!
I'll be doing parts two and three to bring you up to the present day--4.5 years!--so make sure you're subscribed so you don't miss those. :-)

Hey y'all! To be clear, the thumbnail is me in 2018 rewinding back to 2014. Nowhere do I make a claim that my hair grew THAT much in one year. Thank you for watching! :-)
im 15and i 2 strand twisted my starter locs and its the 2nd day and im dealing with extreme itching
@@nadiramcmichael736 I'm sorry to hear that! Try dabbing some witch hazel on your parts with a small makeup brush (nothing that will shed white fibers, like tissue). Give it a little time before you wash it. I hope that helps!
The Girlbook by Nina I was finna say😂
Perception over reality. 🤷🏿♂️
So....the thumbnail is your first year and fourth year......not one year....I see
“I had a concussion and had to go to the hospital...but my hair was doing well.” Lmao

😂😂😂😂 Too funny. Something I would say.
Lol

Can we admire how pretty she is like her features and her symmetrical face girl YESSSS
Right I’m over here like yesssss queen melanin poppin
She is gorgeous.
Perfect face!
Was thinking the same thing.
Girl Charleston is also the land of locs! I recently moved here and darn near every man I see has locs, and every woman has natural hair, braids, or locs. Very rarely do I see a black woman with a weave, and she is usually a college kid who's not from here if she does have a weave. I started my loc journey 5 months ago and either I get compliments or no one comments at all because they are so used to it. Girl even white people never ask questions lol. I love that I just fit right in
Wow! That's hilarious! I never imagined Charleston would be like that, but times have changed lol. It's nice when you can just be "one of the people"! Thank you for watching! :-)
I'm from Orangeburg so I'm about 70 miles away and locs are becoming pretty common here more than they used to be. I've had mine 4yrs now and I love them.
This makes me so happy 😊💛🎉🎊
Lol i knooooow im in charleston born and raised and yes most of us do have locs or any natural style..lol...i love my locs
Just moved to Charleston and I am starting my loc journey. I've been natural since 2011 and cut my hair all off a year and a half ago!
I'm locing this year.!...my daughter tried to get me to loc with her 5 years ago...Now her locs are down her back...DaMn😣I should have listened 😂
🤣
🤣🤣
🤣🤣🤣
It just don't get any better to see a black woman with her natural hair it's a big release from being a slave of a flat iron, perms, weave and wigs!!!!!!!!!!
Yes it is
I agree
Yes indeed I stopped getting perms, then I did the big chop, now I'm starting my dreads and it feels like freedom
Carl Mccarthy I been natural for 3yrs one of the best things I ever done
how am I being a slave to protective styles though? I totally agree with the flat iron and perm, but a big part of being natural and even a black woman is the versatility with hairstyles ESPECIALLY protective styles like wigs, weaves , braids but, you go king (:
Feeling feminine was an issue with me too. Thank you for bringing that point up. Your hair is beautiful. 💗💗💗
Mine too...but we are beautiful no matter what

Did you still have your cat between your legs?
I needed to see this girl! I’m 3 months in and I feel so ballheaded!😂Can’t wait for mine to grow!
Starting mines this week. I just know people will be able to see my thoughts 😂
Use rose water for the dryness....works like a charm
Those water dries out
Question so the more dry your hair is the better for ras? I'm asking cause I want to start mines
There’s a difference between hydrating your hair and moisturizing your hair! First apply water then apply oil to cause the water to stick because of the thickness of the oil
Rose water with oil in it works like magic
Such an inspiring video for those starting their loc journey. You were very clear and concise and at no point did I have to hit the fast forward button! Please continue to post my daughter just started her loc journey and is so inspired to continue her journey after seeing this! Thank you for sharing!
Wow! Thank you, Eboni!! I’m so glad I could help!! I hope she stays inspired throughout her journey, because it’s so worth it. Much love to both of you. 💕

I'm one week in and this was so inspiring and motivational!! Your locs are beautiful!!
Yay!! I'm so happy this was helpful for you! Thank you so much, and best wishes on the journey! You'll really love it.
Is your avi you in the coily phase? You look so pretty and you hair is POPpin!!!
what's your hair like now?
Heavnli_goddess Congrats on being one year in! 😊
Also I think it’s awesome DC embraces locs/natural hair, which means there’s prob good natural hair salons there. I’ve been thinking about moving there. That’s def a plus.
Definitely! It's a great place for Black people in general :-)

First off, your photo from black hair magazine was the pic I took to my stylist back in 01 -02 for my very first sew in! And your still hair goals with locs honey!
Watched this video in my first month and I’m about to celebrate my first year in June! Had a lot of ups and downs with my loc journey so far, but I think it’s finally starting to look good! 😁
Fellow MS girl here - 1 week in to my starter loc journey and the struggle is real! Thanks for this, super relatable and inspiring
I like how detailed this video was! Tfs
Thank you!! I kept a log of my progress during the first year :-)
Omg my mom used to have that magazine that you were in! That's so crazy I didn't even know that was u! 😍
Wow!! It's such a small world! That was more than 10 years ago. You have a great memory 😆

Cole Brown honestly am a Ghanaian and have known those exact pose way back in Africa. I was shock had to adjust my volume hear her again. Can’t believe she is the one. She looks younger now.
I use lemongrass oil, witch hazel, avocado and rosehip oil, and spring water. For a DIY leave in conditioner. My hair is always soft and never dry.
I might try that!
I watched your video for inspiration to start over. I just cut my 11 year locs off and your video made me feel a lot better about starting over for fresh healthy locs. I wanted bigger more uniform locs, mine started as sisterlocks and people frequently called them braids which I didn't like. I know a lot more now than I did back when I started, hopefully one day mine will be as beautiful as yours!
OMG I remember being 17 and taking your photo to the every hair salon in desperate attempts for the stylist to give me the same look with the side bangs over my eye lol. I am considering trying locks. I Love your hair now, your gorgeous either way. Love from London
Wow!! Such a small world! Thank you so much! 💕
Just started my Loc journey June 3,2021 and i already feel like i look crazy.😳😳 Good thing my hubby is very supportive during my journey👐👐. Cant wait for my 1 year anniversary😍😍 Good video to watch.
Love em Nice locs! They are awesome. When I first started my hair was in the awkward short super frizzy stage. Now its been a year and 10 months I use rose water with the green Sproil oil or coconut oil and they are shiny black, much smoother, hardly no frizz, non stiff, and past my neck now. It is a process but it is really worth the wait. Even the folks who scoffed at locs at first see my hair progress and now are trying to get them. Lol I'm never going back to flat irons! Dont knock anyone else for it though. Thanks for your videos.
If DC is the land of locs I need to gooooo 😂😂
I need to see more people with locs.
They’re everywheeeeeeerree 😂😂
Right! I’ve never once had anyone say anything in the workplace.
Girl Charleston too. Every man has locs and every woman has natural hair, braids, or locs. Rarely do I see weaves/wigs unless they are a college kid or a really elderly lady lol
Yep, everybody is locked here. I'm in the process of growing mine out and getting it healthier for locs. I can't wait!!!
A J lolll everyone has locs here
The fact that I shaped almost all my looks on your look in middle school!!! GIRLL! so happy for you whats crazy is i have locs now too! still my hair inspo after all these years
Hi Nina! I am so happy that you made this video. Your video here is so encouraging to me. Thank you so much! I am on my third set of locs (I was sick and lost my hair for a few years - yep, all sixteen inches. I had been wearing locs since 2005 and before that extensions.) I am super-psyched for my six-month mark in January 2022! My hair is healthy and I use it as a barometer for my state of health. So far, so good! Also this is the only way I know how to wear my hair now. I tried wigs but sister, I did not want straight hair, I had no idea how to style it and I live in Canada where there are no Black people. I tried twisting but it wouldnt take so I am starting from plaits and it feels really good this time. So, thank you form the bottom of my heart. I look forward to seeing your other videos. I am going to pace them out so I dont grow impatient. Blessings, Nam-myoho-renge-kyo
Ty very much for this video! I began my journey in October 2019 and this video has truly lifted my spirit! Stay cute & updated!
Thank you for this.
Because giiiiirl i just started my loc journey,( 06.29 ) & let me tell you. I definitely don’t feel feminine, at all. I could Cry, lol i know i will turn into a baddie sooner than later but man. Very helpful tips !
how’s it going now?
Thank you for posting this. Now I really cannot wait to start my journey!!! I was apprehensive, but your experience is inspiring.
I love seeing people from MS. Im from there as well! Im starting my locs soon. They're beautiful on you girl!
Me too!! Thank you, and good luck on getting started! :-)
Have you got locs yet? If so, how was your experience too?
This is amazing my starter locs look EXACTLY like yours with the few locs in the front and everything. this makes me super happy your locs look beautiful im only 3 weeks in.
I definitely remember seeing your pictures in hair magazines! 😍 But I'm so broken hearted. I started my loc journey on Jan 31, 2018. I was going to a "professional" to get them done every 3-4 weeks. My husband work schedule changed so I couldn't go to her anymore so I had to find someone who could work with our schedule. Thank the Lord I did that.i went in and she was livid when she saw my hair. Almost all of them was untwisted and at this phase I'm supposed to be pretty far in. Esp with the length and texture of my hair. Smh she washed my hair. And told me I was going to have to start over because my foundation was not done correctly. She comb all of my "locs" out with her fingers within 2 min. 🤦😠 I was thinking I was really progressing and all along the ones that were still somewhat there they were hanging on by basically dirt and buildup. She started me over and I could tell by the way she twisted them vs the first lady these are good to go. And just Beautiful. I'm just upset cause now I'm back at stage one. At this point 1 week on my new loc journey. So disappointing. Seeing this video def makes me like ugh but staying the course and I'm learning how to do my own hair!
Oh no! I'm so sorry to hear that. It's so disappointing to have that kind of setback, but yes, please stay the course! It will happen in time for you! Thank you so much for watching :-)
Awesome video and photo documentation to give a full picture of the beginning of your journey. Very helpful and such a beautiful girl! Yo go Sis such a inspiration thanks to you I am closer to starting my journey. Thank you
I'm 9 months in with my locs. I started with the two strand twist. I'm inspired and just subscribed to your channel. Just waiting for them to fully loc.
Thank you so much!! You're in a good spot right now. They'll be loc'd before you know it :-)
The Girlbook by Nina You're welcome :)
Tiffany Noel so your hair hasn’t fully locked. I want to wear my hair in twist but I’m not sure if I want it to lock yet. I think I want to wear twist when I don’t want to do it.
First time I locked I couldn't deal with he itching. I had to take a comb through it! Plus i got it locked when it was extremely hot and the nature of my job is to sweat a bit! Lol. I'm just gonna grow my hair some more and wait until the weather is cooler.
Overall I can't wait to start again... Great content and it was a pleasure watching the progress. Plus your so beautiful and your locs suit you. Peace and love to you and family. Asé
I am six weeks into my journey. Your locs look the most like mine that seen. At this point I have watched this video serval times. While I understand my journey is my own. I watch you for inspiration. Thank you
I just hit a year today and got curious about other’s experiences ! luv how actually nice yours was :) luv the people near you too for the support
Oh em gee! Our process in terms of time was very close! I hope you enjoyed it. I know it can be rough but now I appreciate it a whole lot! 😍😎
Oh my goodness! I’m so glad RUclips shared this video with me! I’m 5 days in and I’m patting my head like a sew in with this itchy scalp. Thank you for letting me know you went thru the same 🤗💖.
Thats ONE YEAR?! Im on 1 1/2 and mine are barely at my jaw!! :(
Don't fret! Every head is different. Stay the course!! :-)
Wash regularly and moisturize well. don't put a lot of products in you hair.
When I did mini twists they were so frail and thin and I realized the reason why was because I was detangling too much using tools. Now I'm almost exclusively finger detangling for the whole year I might brush it out carefully once or twice cuz I don't want locks right now. I noticed a lot of thickness and my length is going farther down without tapering... brushing it Snaps It Off very easily from my tightly coiled texture and very tiny fine thin size strands, but my individual hair strands are nowhere near thick or strong. Have to be very delicate
She states in the background info the picture in the thumbnail with her locks at jaw length was taken this year 2018

Every stage of your loc journey was GORGEOUS! I’m at the 4th month mark of my journey and I’ve enjoyed every stage so far.your growth progress was amazing! You’re beautiful sis! 🙌🏾😍
You and your locs are BEAUTIFUL!! Nothing awkward about it! Lots of length in the first year too, can’t wait for part 2 & 3😊😊😊💗💜
Thank you much!! The first year wasn’t too bad looking back 😄😄
My wife just says trust the process trust the process now I see why , thanks again
Your locs are absolutely beautiful ❣️ I am only a couple months into my loc journey & pray my mature locs are as neat and healthy as yours💞
Thank you!! Shower them with love 💕
This video was so detailed .. Also, thank you for including so many pictures. Really appreciate it. I'm contemplating doing locs.. but it's a commitment and I want to be sure before I undergo
I’m glad to see someone with a similar hair thickness and density. Very encouraging. I’m 2 weeks in 😊
I’m so glad I found this video. This the journey I seem to be having with my locs! I’m at about 6 months now but I’m still having the issue with the front area.
Hey Sis, I had the same experience with the freezer smdh where I had a concussion. I’m so glad that I found your video because you are where I am currently in this video with my journey! Thanks for sharing!
That is sooo cool that you modeled in black hair magazine. It is especially neat seeing all the comments from people recognizing you!
OMG, yes! Such a small world!
Wow I didn't know that was you. Your pictures inspired me to do a lot with my hair. I'm starting my locks now. Thank you for all the inspiration and may God continue to bless you 🙏 ❤
I just did my first 2 weeks ago thinking I pay 80 dollars every month for retwist I'm trying to do it myself but soo new to locks. Thanks for the video.
This video was SO encouraging! I love your locks!
This video is awesome.I started my dreadlock journey two weeks ago. Hair free care free!
I’m going to start my loc journey October 27, 2021 I am so so excited my appointment is for 10 o’clock with a professional 🙏🏽
Girl u giving me hope the only reason I was hesitant to lock is cuz I’m not trying to go thru that ugly phase but the end result is beautiful
I’m SOOO excited! Thank you for your advice!!! For a few days I’ve been complacent about locking my hair! This just confirmed everything 🥰
Yay!! Do it!!
I’m trying to refrain from telling people because many try to steer me away from getting them ! I am confident in myself and this transition!! 💜
Your hair grows super fast 💚
Sometimes I can't tell, but thank you!! :-)
The Girlbook by Nina what do u use
If she was pulling them once a month would be much longer
I just started my locs jan 10!! My scalp started itching 2 days later i was about to take them out😂😂😂!!! It took me 2 months to get a re twist but i love the results tho😍😍😍!! I can shake my locs now ayyyyw😂😂
I'm so happy I ran across this video! Right before I got on RUclips I said I was "cutting off my locs" I'm 2 months in and over the marrying at my roots and slippage! Ugh. This video has inspired me to keep pushing! 🥰❤
Hair goals. Iam locking mines on Saturday 😻😻
I just got done with your 6 year loc journey video, so I just had to come back and watch your journey from the beginning again ☺️☺️
I’m from DC and they do like Locs... I’m a month in and my hair so soft I didn’t think it’s going last... listen to your journey I think I will have hope in 5 months. Also don’t feel bad that I trying do it myself to save money. I made up a style called “bobby-pins hairstyles”
Im from Mississippi too. It’s true about not many people wearing locs in MS.., even now you see a few but not many... your photos of your journey is cool... new subbi
Thank you for the video. I just got my locs, and I am trying to get use the short look. My hair looks like yours in the beginning, color and length. I’m glad I finally got it done though.
Thanks for sharing, I'm from Alabama, I moved to DC over 30 years ago. I told my mother I wanted locs she said no they don't look good she said you will look like Whoppi I said they are going to be much smaller. But anyway she passed away then I said ok I can get my locs my sister said no, even thought I'm my own person I decided not to. FYI I just starting my locs on February 23, 2020 I have my journey now. I love your hair I'm falling in love with my hair like never before.
Hey name twin! You and your hair are gorgeous! Thank you for this. I'm finally starting out with a 2-strand twist and am in that uncomfortable "too short/feeling un-feminine" stage. After yrs of a slow-growing TWA, I'm hoping my little locs grow as fast as yours did! ❤
0:52 I know you girl. I've seen this pic many times at the hair salon, lol. N I love your locs. Thinking of starting my journey.
Beautiful. I don’t have locs, but I like watching these loc journey videos.
Thank you so much! :-)
Wow! So awesome. I did the exact same. Loved my short hair. Just now growing it back to starter locs.
I got my hair locked Jan 5 2019. I am just statting my Lock Journey. Yours looks nice.😁
Just got my starter locs! You've inspired me!!!
Can you share pic. I'm getting ready to start mine
You did that thang girl!! Congrats!!🎉🎉👏👏👏👏👏!👏

You have a great smile and kept a positive outlook on your journey. I told a woman that I wanted to start locs but would hate the "ugly phase". She responded, "Sweetie you're not ugly so there is NO ugly phase". That really encouraged me. Thanks for sharing! Mine were started last week @ a professional salon. Looks about the same!
This video was soooooo helpful and encouraging!!! I’m starting mine in the next week or so when my stylist returns. I can’t wait! Thank you for sharing!
It looks so nice I thought about locs a few years ago so I tried it! Then I took it out!! But lately I thought about it again!! so I just may give a try again.. Anyway they look lovely thanks for sharing your loc journey with me.
I'm in the DC area also. I'm just tired of fighting my hair. Its very kinky, coily, curly and I've just decided that i need to embrace that aspect of my hair. Locs just seem like the most natural way to go especially with my texture and curl pattern. I think Im going to start my journey Spring or Summer 2019 with coils since I already finger coil my hair. Thanks for sharing.
Hey, DC! That was very well said. Locs are just about going with the flow. I think you'll enjoy the journey. Thank you so much for watching!
78 Vette what's your hair texture I have 4c hair and I recently found out that it's the reason on my locs dont unravel I'm 3 months in the loc game
You are just...so freaking pretty! You just exude warmth and kindness! And yes I'm subbing just off those assumptions lolol!
I've been playing with the idea of locs for a while. This is absolutely encouraging me to act on it! I liked the short length on you, you rocked it! Giving me all types of ideas!
Also, kudos to your BF at the time encouraging and embracing your locs. I hate to say but some people, particularly men, can be really ignorant about black women's hair and our femininity.
🥰🥰 Thank you so much!!
What a wonderful loc journey. You looked fabulous. Can’t wait to start my own journey.
Thank you!! I hope you do soon!
Me too! Starting mine in January.. been researching and watching a lot of RUclips vids 💜
Yeah you’re right, moving to DC really gives you inspiration to loc your hair.
Wauuu u have inspired mi just day 2 on my journey...I pray I never be discouraged coz this has motivated mi .. thanks
I have seen you in all those bookssssss of hair!! I remember your face!! Wow!! 🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾😍
Today I started my Loc journey!!!! ❤️ Thank you for this video . 🙏🏾
I know this video is old, but I've been researching locs as I'm about two months into my hair loc journey. It's really cool to see a fellow Mississippian with locs on this platform.
Congrats on your loc journey! I always love bumping into other Mississippians! ❤️❤️
Starkville, MS here! I’m one month in and I’m loving the rough look cuz when that retwist comes around! Whew! We bad! Where y’all from??
@@gabriellethomas4619 I'm from Meridian.
I had mine for 3 years and i got bored so i cut them and grew my natural hair. It's been 6months and I'm ready to reinstall. Great video
Looking at your older pictures, you look absolutely gorgeous, stunning, amazing
Did you do any magazines or photoshoots for companys because I swear I have seen that picture at 1:00 before??
Yes! Lol. Sophisticate's Black Hair magazine :-)
The Girlbook by Nina I am not surprised you’re gorgeous!! 😊
Thank you so much!! :-)
Very Nice Loc Journey,
Don't understand the negative comments!!
Everybody cant wear them, Pretty on You!!!!!!!
your hair looks clean, neat, and organized. beautiful
Your hair journey is very valid I feel the same way about the weaves and wigs I was wearing weaves and wigs for so long and perming my hair that my scalp was so damaged I literally could not put on another wig or extension on my head scalp was so damaged I had to expose my hair for sunlight and growth applicants put witch hazel on my scalp to help alleviate the dryness that my scalp had been having I'd like to just grow my logcs but no one supporting my natural hair Journey it feels lonely I feels like if I shave my head like that I would not get such a receptive look although it's natural and I know that sounds strange but in society everybody wants us to live to a standard of beauty and some of us are forced to live that standard of beauty I'd like to be more supported in my natural hair journey to grow my locks and to look beautiful as a natural black women thanks for this I like watching it inspires me
Charleston born over here too! 4 months in to my loc journey! And i started with the same length from the video, so this was encouraging to see!
I’m on Day 3! This is encouraging. Thank you.
This was the best loc journey video i've seen for first year. Thank you for this
I'm still retwisting my hair with bobby pins💀💀💀💀💀
If it ain't broke... 😂😂
Lol the girl who started my locs started them with Bobby pins and are still using them on my hair 😂
They work! That's good enough for me
i used to see your face all the time, you have such a pretty smile. can’t believe that was you!
Love your locks, I have sisterlocs, and my daughters are traditional, thanks for sharing and promoting natural hair
I'm a month into my loc journey and I have to say you definitely skipped the "awkward " phase. My hair is frizzy and sticking up all over
girl am watching again it is so inspiring to me so i keep watching this same video i am finally four months in with my dreads
Wow you are so pretty.
Thank you so much :-)
I think I might just give myself some dreads. I can’t figure out how to start off a braid. RUclips and everything, and I really want to wear my natural hair. I love how I look in braids but sometimes I don’t have the 200$ to give someone to do it only to be in pain for days and take it out later on. 😂
Love your hair I'm at the beginning stages of my locks. Don't really like the way they look because they are mingle Gray but I am going to keep them thank you for this video
Here in Mississippi, locs are all over the place. Seems like I got into the game late. Pretty girl with pretty locs. Keep doing you
