- The Ghost Stories of M. R. James
Episode 1: The Ash-tree
The tale documents the tale of Sir Richard Fell, who has just inherited Castringham, a country seat with an unfortunate history. The house has been cursed since the day his ancestor, Sir Matthew Fell, condemned a woman to death for witchcraft. It is soon discovered that the ancient ash tree outside his bedroom window is the root of the problem.

This is an ORIGINAL HorrorBabble Production.
Almost every M. R. James story has a line to the effect of "I'm not going to bore you (the reader) by further describing this" and it never fails to crack me up. Great reading, Ian.
Ha - absolutely. Thanks again Joshua. Ian
I love the intonation when you read "he had become infected with the Italian taste." A centuries-long tradition of English disdain for Italian ways is behind that priceless tone -- and some feared infections were not merely ones of architectural taste, of course!
Great story and narration!
Thanks!
Can’t go wrong with M. R. James :) His stories are as vivid as though he had seen what he describes.
So true -- and we appreciate your motion pictures and explorations, sir.
I hope I’m not pestering you but I had to tell you how much I loved this one, and a few of the other ones, tomorrow I am working so tonight I’m looking for entertainment on your channel! it stayed with me, This one and a few others! Thank you so much for what you do! It’s so important to distract people from the negativity in their lives! You should be so proud of yourself!🌹
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Nicely put!👍😃

One of my favorite tales from when I was a young lad.
This is a brilliant M. R. James story. It’s also the story that kept me awake for days on end for fear those horrific things would appear at my sill, or under the bed. A wonderful narration as always !
Not the most pleasant thought when you're trying to drift off!
HorrorBabble definitely not!! But it has succeeded in making many readers and listers pleasant uncomfortable and Male the flesh creep. So it’s well worth it!!

Oh, what a superb witches' tale. Very spell binding and of course wonderfully narrated. Thank you.
Thanks again, Amy. :)
Thank you for this reading! M.R. James is great.
I'm glad you enjoyed it!
A definite classic. Many thanks for this reading. As an aside, would you consider reading "The Horror from the Hills" by Frank Belknap Long?
Thanks Ian! Would you mind submitting your request here: www.horrorbabble.com/contact (Helps me keep track!)
Loving your narrations. Thank you
Thanks for listening, Lee!
I just watched your video , A day in the Studio, and I have hard time placing your voice in this reading with with you. You're pretty good.
Thanks Kiki - I do my best. Ian
Decent reading. Nothing beats the sinister (and unfortunately abridged) Christopher Lee reading.
Are you refering to the BBC 4 episode TV series which C. Lee narrates M. R. James stories. That one is really awesome.

Magnificent tale and flawlessly narrated as always. Thank you so much!!!
Thanks as always, Jamie!
Plural for the word "hearsay" is "hearsay", not "evidence". You can't just hang a person because multiple people thought they saw something :(
No, not even if they were an actual witch.
Old comment lol, but testifying as to things you saw/experienced is not hearsay. Hearsay is when you describe what someone else told you.
If a bunch of people say, "I saw this woman doing witch stuff," then that's not hearsay, those are eyewitness accounts. Direct testimony from witnesses is still considered highly valuable evidence in modern courts.
