  • We’ve made videos highlighting affordable big and mid-sized cities to live in Europe, but this time around we have listed 15 best small cities in Europe that offer the cheapest cost of living. Now, by small cities we are only going to mention cities with a population between 50,000 to 200,000. In spite of being small these cities offer most modern day services and amenities with a decent quality of life. So collectively these cities are great for those who want to live in a slow-paced environment. The only downside to living in a smaller city would be a decrease in job opportunities so preferably, this list is for people with a steady cashflow be it digital nomads, retirees or expats.

Not small enough ... how about some micro-cities?

All subject to Schengen. So don't get a long lease unless you're getting a long term visa.

I love these videos, but I would love to see some calibration on the living costs. I've rented small apartments in the USA where rent alone is well beyond the numbers you quote. What do you get for 'well under $1600 per month"? A cot on the floor of a one room apartment with no cooking facilities? A room in a boarding house?

Median cost of living is the sum that the average resident of that city or place spends per month and that's including rent and everything with the exception of entertainment expenses. I have been to 3 of the cities mentioned in this video Salzburg, Grenoble and Girona. Salzburg was a bit expensive but I know a guy who rents a 2 bedroom flat there for around 820 euro per month. Girona was the cheapest with some 1 bedroom flats going for around 550 euro per month.

Thanks for the great information. Can I assume that the ~$1800 per month includes rent, utilities and groceries ( for the most part)?
