  • The Anti- Marriage Proposal-- 1966. Invoking the Roman pagan deities Cupid and Venus, Georges Brassens tells his lady why the Christian sacrament of marriage is actually a sacrilege: it kills love. Many would agree. True to his word, Brassens never married his sweetheart of 30 years for whom this song was intended. Translation and video choice by philipchek of Paris (this song is one of his favorites) revised by lightning494 of New York.

    Ah Georges! Le hero de ma mere, et maintenant, le mien aussi! A travers les continents, les cultures different, les oceans, le temps passe... je pleure avec joie d'entendre tes chansons. Merci Georges Brassens, un grand merci pour tes chansons dans lequelles on trouve la France et tous les emotions humains.

    This is an inspiring song and message. Why do we trap ourselves based upon others expectations? Morals and ethics, yes. Blind obedience, no.

    My wife and I went to see Brassens lives at Bobino in Paris in the late 70's, and it was a big treat, because that theater in Paris Bobino is small, so wherever you're seating you could hear the music as well as anybody seating in the front row. What I like about Georges Brassens is of course his songs, he's a legend in France, but you can see at the end the song,the way that he's holding his guitar, it's like a carpenter holding a hammer or something like it. The guitar was his tool, and he carries it as such. One thing that I saw on TV was some of his friends, like Lino Ventura was saying that he will invite his friends to eat, and he did not prepare anything to eat, they had to look in the fridge for cold cuts or cheese or whatever. And that is because he did not want a lady to do the labor of cooking, serving and so on. So Lino Ventura was saying in a show call " Apostrophe" we had to bring food and casseroles to do the cooking ourselves.

    You are right. We hope to make English readers to discover the meaning of the songs, but we do not pretend to translate the poetry. Well, the song is here and understandable in its meaning. For Poetry, the door is open for English poet to translate, if they like the song.

    Tu as totalement raison - et merci de dire que la traduction est "ok". Le rêve serait que quelque traducteur professionnel se mette à traduire Brassens en anglais sur RUclips, mais voilà : les pros ne le feront jamais gratuitement. Alors on s'y met, avec tout les défauts de notre amateurisme, mais aussi toute notre sincérité. Ce n'est qu'une invitation pour de meilleurs que nous à faire mieux... mais depuis que YT existe, on les attends encore....

      Great remark. And let me tell you : I'm French and that's my native language. I can assure you that going from the French to the English translation was very moving. Even if the translation can't do as well (or at all), it adds some universal value to it. I'm sure that English speakers can feel the best of it.

    It is a song against the servitude of women at home, inside marriage and he does not want that for his love, the woman of his life, his soulmate.

    the translation is ok (I'm French), but as always with poetry, its sometimes impossible to catch some tricks from a langague to another. Great song, of course.

    You really have catched where the real poetry of the song lies - that is, i do believe it, what was the most important thing for Brassens and the reason why he wrote the song. Thanks for your comment.

    @insanityrulestheday ps. I do believe in the SACREMENT of MARRIAGE :-)

    • @1956Caddy
      @1956Caddy 6 лет назад

      Which means nothing without sincere love. A sacrement doesn't convert anything into a sacred thing if it is not in the first place. And nobody can marry a piece of paper. God is love. Nobody believes in paper.
