some say that albert hammond jr. is still hammering the g chord up in the twelth fret till today, never stopped
😂
I'd LOVE a video about your idea of Julian applying SATB part writing in rock, always thought that the meticulous nature of how all the parts fit together is one of The Strokes most attractive aspects of their music
💯💯💯 that's also always been my favorite thing about this band too. I think it was my first time really thinking about how harmony can be composed. Each individual member's part can sound so simple (like Albert just down stroking one chord for an entire verse) but when you put everything together, it sounds so complex. They're like a voltron or Megatron when they all come together
Agreed, please make it
You definitely should go for this SATB choral thing, I'd totally love to know more about it in that! Great stuff!
I was never a big user of solfege, but to me, "movable do" makes more sense, because it allows you to compare melodies across different keys much easier, the same reason why we use numbers for chord progressions
We also use letters that don't change, so they both have their purpose. Movable seems more normal to me too though
Nice analysis, bro. Knowing theory for songwriting is more important then most musicians realise.
Didn't realize people were so butthurt about theory. anyway, JC mentions (multiple times) in interviews that one of the most important things he learned was voice leading. so, theory about choral music applied to a rock band might be true indeed. damn, can't wait to go through the rest of the video :D
I know these lyrics by heart now. I LOVE this song! keep up the great tunes, Matty!
awesome videos and breakdowns, the Strokes are criminally underrated, these videos are a treasure. you're also sporting the Julian Casablancas haircut as well, very nice.
The haters’ anger is born of the fear of the unknown... Their lack of knowledge of music theory.
The best songwriters tend to have little or no knowledge of theory...But the best ear. I know several session musicians. They write the most unremarkable songs.
Thank you for your efforts, Matty. I’m looking forward to your analysis of more Strokes’ songs.
Great video Matty, always appreciate your analyses! I personally feel 'Room on Fire' has the best demonstrations of Julian's pure songwriting ability so I would love to see you pick it apart.
Been waiting on this. Learned so much. Please keep it up!
Thank you for putting this video together for us! So many "aha and ohhhh thats why" learning moments in the video! Im sure a lot of the decisions that were made in writing this song were conscious because on top of the lyrics and structure of the song feeling nostalgic and bittersweet, the music video and their image at that time was also nostalgic. What I loved about them more than any of the other "retro rock" bands at the time though was the fact that they didn't sound like a complete ripoff or look gimmicky (i.e. The Hives). Their music just FELT so GOOD. And your videos tell us why so thank you again! Definitely becoming a patreon!
dang, Hard to Explain is really beautiful on piano
Red Light needs an analysis too - the complementing guitars on it are so symbiotic!
red light definitely is one that took a while to click for me!
Damn it's my favourite 😊
Mr. Matty!! You got the Phd working in this masterclass on Strokesian Musical Theory. Awesome in depth look.
26:45 "It's a very good song." My favourite bit. 😁
I really like the idea of all chord and passing tones of given section being the entire harmonic "flavor" of that section. I've never thought about it like that. I love love harmony and color but I suck at writing melodies, and I think this is a cool way to think about perhaps simplifying harmony in the instrumentation and using those colors in the melody. Great set of videos!
Hey matty, I really think you're spot on and I agree with all of your analysis!
Something that I think it's KEY in the chorus is how the drums go half time in the ride cymbal, but Albert and Nikolai are still on eighth notes, giving an impresion of speed increase, because you're used to the cymbals on eighths most of the song. Relativity :)
Julian and Nick are trained. Had the same guitar teacher, JP Bowersock I believe? Forgot the fellas name but they talk about it in "Meet Me In The Bathroom" (the book, not the song)
The piano cover tho 😭👌 this was so informative please keep it up and also More Puppy Content Pls
This video makes me want to listen to hard to explain every five minutes
We need more videos from you man! This is some of my favorite content on RUclips. Nobody with such a strong background in theory is covering this indie bands 🔥
Awesome series! Looking forward to more Strokes analysis!!! I'd also be curious on your take on how The Strokes helped bring rock music out of the 90s and really shut the door on the 90s alt rock sound that followed out of grunge. Their timing at the beginning of the 2000s really set the stage for that decade and it's often said that they influenced many bands, but people don't really expand on how or why. I bet you could do an awesome job explaining that!
the shitty graphs were the best part of the video, and that says a lot because this breakdown was really great
The strokes - "you only live once"
Sounds similar to Queen - " i want to break free" you should do a music theory on that strokes song lol
These are some of my favourite videos on youtube
thank you so much for this! keep up the good work!
what a cool video, love your wok, you know a lot of theory, and you are really good at teachingt, thanks for sharing your knwoledge, wish you the best
thank you so much for your support 🙏
FINALLY THE SECOND PART! tHANKS!!!
Awesome stuff man
You should do a video where you prank call strokes fans with a strokes impression lol
LOVE THE EVA SHOIRT
i see you are a person of taste hehe
Nice. Love the dog too
Thank you very much! Amazing video. Very inspiring.
Literally watched your whole 50 minute dissertation on this song. You might be the most entertaining music theorist on RUclips. Also, you're a great musician and I legit enjoy the stuff I've heard you do. I make music as well, so it's something I really have a passion for.
Make that video, Matty; MAKE THAT VIDEO YYOOO!!! 😮😃 pls 🙏
Please make a video about four-part harmony in relation to ITI!!
Hey could you cover I like the night? I know it never got finished but it’s sooo short and catchy!
more long vids please!
Working on it 🥰
You. Are. Awesome!!! Keep it up!!
I didn’t even know “fixed do” was a thing lmao, I feel like the only thing that matters is how the note is used relative to the key so what even is the purpose of using fixed do? Why would you not just refer to it as C?
iirc some languages don't use letters to refer to notes, they just use solfege, so having a "fixed do" is important in those cases. I believe this is the case in Italian and French, and I also believe it's dumb lmfao
The word I think u were searching for when u said a “thought” was a vamp :)
Technically correct but i may have been trying to speak loosey goosey philosophical-like lmao
Please do the 4 part harmony video!!!!!
Loving this! Thank you so much!
Would love to see a video on the SATB :)
I just put one up a week or so ago, check my channel!
Thanks for this great analysis!!! (Y)
Great video.
Can you do Reptilia next? Or if your open to bands, it would be awesome to see some analyses of emo/mathrock!
Hey Matty, would love to do a collab with you in the future!
yes let's!
9:43 Can you please explain what a G pedal tone is and how you are playing it?
I understand pedal tones as a note that you keep the same, whilst playing other notes or chords alongside it in a section. In that one, u can hit 5th fret D string (or the open G string) to get the G note along side the other notes in a riff.
@@haroldushawkinsi5804 Oh, perfect! I got you. For some reason, in my head I thought you would need to continually play an open G string, which was not what I was seeing on video.
This now makes a ton of sense. Thank you!
Love evangelion and love the strokes just as much
Do the video about julian puttin 4 part harmony on a rock band
Nick Valensi talks about his love of music theory and how it helps
Can I ask where you got that from?
@@blankyd3360 reading interviews
@@destrosodo u have a link?
@@blankyd3360 Have you given it a search?
Yeah, couldn't really find one where he outright says he loves music theory.
just want to say i envy the shit outta you. been sorta following you for the better part of 2 years and you're living the fuckin life. keep it goin
hey my friend thank you soooo much for the support, it really means the world 🙏
Are you one of those people that only listens to a few bands over and over? In the past I have spent a whole year just listening to the strokes for example… i haven’t listened to the strokes for a few years now to recreate that first listen again. I just wish I had your brain to analyze it better.
I definitely get obsessed with albums for a while but they're rarely the ONLY thing i listen to in those periods .. would love to re capture that first time listening magic again 😭
@@mattygregmusic the way you break it down is like an adventure worth diving back into. Excited for your future videos!
Bro explained the unexplainable
I have some feedback, MAKE MORE!
Hey Matty, Id love to get your opinion on my latest single!
Loving this series

Late to the party but the do re mi shit is a waste of time. If we’re sitting thru these vids, we can keep up without. That being said, love this channel and thanks for all the hard work. Would be interested in similar videos covering artists like Bowie, eno, byrne etc. if not whatever and thanks again. You are very talented and importantly enthusiastic
@@ParisLeonard-vj4gc hey my friend i super appreciate your kind words; i would love to cover other artists like the ones you mentioned! :)
In retrospect I do think my pacing in this vid (from over 2 years ago mind you) is a bit slow, I can def speed it up a bit. However, the usage of either the solfege (do-re-mi) or scale degrees is essential to fully understand the way all of the parts of the arrangement relate to each other, the tonal center, and the overall composition. If you are not a fan of solfege for whatever reason perhaps you could be better able to engage with scale degrees :)
Seeing this as a music major with good music theory and analysis knowledge, I got to say… it actually wasn’t that hard to explain.🤔
hmm, I'd say the actual chord analysis isnt too hard, but to explain how such simple ingredients make such magic? now thats a little more nuanced, and treads into hard to explain territory ;) make sure to check my first video on this song too!
Are you a floridian?

i hate the strokes
Sick bro 🤙
