I donated my kidney to my best friend in 1998. I had major complications during the procedure that resulted in lifelong health issues. Oschner’s in New Orleans said too bad, you’re on your own. Between the loss of my career and medical procedures and meds, it’s cost me everything
So sorry to hear that. What a terrible thing to come out of such a selfless act. I knew a young man who also had complications while harvesting his kidney and, years later, he was still not able to work.

Not very good. The trauma caused a disease that effects your autonomic nervous system, called CRPS. It ranks highest in the McGill pain chart. Usually it’s localized to the areas of the trauma, but it can spread as mine did.
I’ve recently been diagnosed with mixed connective tissue disease. I can’t help but wonder if the CRPS played a part in that or was I destined to come down with anyway.

Doc, have you ever donated YOUR own kidney? OR! Do these doctors ever donate their own kidneys?
Of course not. Another doctor even said it themselves, donors are willing to put up with much higher risk levels then even they(doctors) would.
If they tell you a fluffed up version of the ‘mild’ side effects, imagine that as the tip of the iceberg.
For the truth, visit Facebook kidney donor support groups.
With the anger out of the way, this doesn’t mean that a person can’t donate their kidney and it be a good thing for the universe.
Just be careful of those quick to call you a hero and good person for wanting to donate a part of yourself.
Those voices will not be around when you are facing the very real potential hardships down the road.
You must be self sustained and able to see the recipient of your kidney donation die a week after receiving your kidney, and still be okay with your decision.
If you can do that, and there wont be any regrets what so ever, then you are probably a good candidate to begin to explore being a donor.
Never do it for money, or because you think you will gain virtue points for doing so. This is an extremely difficult balance to maintain in life.
Good luck to all those considering this path and I hope if all goes through, you make someone’s life markedly better for many many years.

You need to find someone that is a match. And has time to set aside for recovery. The doctors involved are not always matches for that reason. It's not just a blood type that needs to be compatible.

I'd only do it for my kid and spouse. Unless you have no family and nobody loses if you die or are permanently injured, then it should be restricted only to those you can't live without.

Eaf Lun yeh I understand what you mean but I feel sad for the parents imagine everything they've done for us, some parents are still quite young and have so much to live for. I think if my mum was really bad and there was no other option I would help her because I love her so much and truly appreciate everything she's done for me. I would donate to my kids also but as for my husband hmmmm.. not sure about that one!! ;) lol
flyhigh A My point is that while a kid may want to donate, no parent should allow them. Especially if it's a risky donation like a liver. I'd much rather die than face the prospect of my child dying, especially dying to save me which is completely avoidable. I understand where you're coming from though.
