    Hi Dave. I mostly play the p-bass but sure love those Stingrays. I am responding to let you know that I actually own a guitar that has never needed a truss rod adjustment and I bet never will. It is a ca. 1963/64 Japanese made Silvertone electric guitar built by Guyatone. Very similar to the old Kent Polaris models from the same period. There are a couple of reasons for this freak of nature. The first is that it doesn't actually have a trust rod. The neck is just a solid piece of mahogany with a rosewood fretboard. The second reason is that when it is strung with .010 to .046 strings (or something close to that) with the correct neck angle and bridge height adjustment, it has perfect relief and plays beautifully. It was originally sold as the equivalent of today's budget imports such as an Epiphone Special II or Squier Affinity series guitar. Found her in a pawnshop many years ago. A kind of poor man's Jaguar or Jazzmaster kind of thing. Two single coil pickups with adjustable pole pieces. Terrific tone. Cost me 50 bucks. My little Pawnshop Princess.

    I love the older CBS Fender bullet rod for ease of adjustment. It's one of the only really smart changes CBS made to the guitar, IMO. But the spoke wheel adjustment is really growing on me and I think it's about the best method invented thus far for truss rod adjustment.
    By the way, a Canadian friend informed me once that your "four seasons" work out the be Winter, Winter, Summer and Winter. xD

    I'm struggling with the point of this video, to be honest. In a video called "MusicMan Sting Ray Bass Truss Rod Adjustment" I had expected to see er... a MusicMan Sting Ray Bass truss rod adjustment. - in other words somebody perform a truss rod adjustment on a MusicMan Stingray bass. All I see is a guy saying he performed one and showing me a guitar! Am I missing something here?

    Dave, before I saw your video I just knew you were going to say "Earnie Ball-Sack" again! We can all thank Leo Fender for designing the StingRay bass after dumping Fender Musical Instruments to the Corporation. No other bass or guitar has a neck truss rod adjustment that is easier to do than on this bass or on Music Man guitars as well. When I bought my StingRay new, I did not get the tools to adjust the neck or bridge. Should I contact the company and request my ball sack? G&L is also a great instrument designed by Leo Fender as well. I like to think that after Leo dumped Fender, he got his act together to make the good stuff.

    I have a big collection of guitars... and in Ohio USA, we have the 4 seasons too. A few other suggestions for those who live in those kind of environments.
    1. Store your guitars somewhere where the temperature and humidity is rather consistent. A well controlled basement is my preference.
    2. Don't just forget about a guitar in storage. Pop the case open every few months and have a look.
    3. severe weather changes causing necks to go wacky can crack finishes and even disjoint glued parts like fingerboards...
    4. As Dave said, don't just let a problem build and build. If it isn't in adjustment, fix it.

    • @phillippasteur3904

      Very sound advice. The nicest bass I've ever owned was a 2000s Pedulla MVP 5 string. Awesome bass and the best tone I've ever heard, but the necks are so temperamental. I had to adjust it up to a dozen times a year!

    • @The_sinner_Jim_Whitney
      @The_sinner_Jim_Whitney 4 года назад

      I live in Wild, Wonderful West Virginia, in a city on the Ohio River. My music room is kept at room temperature (66-68 in winter, 70-72 in summer) and 45% humidity at all times. I hardly ever have to adjust any of my stringed instruments (my drum kit? Same story, different ending), even if I take them out and play outdoors or drive a long way with them. I think consistency, along keeping them right, makes them a bit more resilient against the odd temperature/humidity change now and again.
      My Ernie Ball Music Man basses and Sterling by Music Man guitars are the ones that usually go anywhere, though, precisely because of their peerless factory construction and that truss rod adjustment.

  • @TheUniversalEyes

    You're so right about the weather and the four seasons. I live about 3 hours to the west of Toronto down by Lake Erie and each day brings something new when it comes to instruments changing. Maybe one day we will gain knowledge from the aliens about a new material that is impervious to temperature, weather, light and has the weight of a feather and the strength to support a trillion tons of force.

    Our band tunes down 1/2 step so I tend to have to release a bit of tension so my bass doesn't fret out while I'm tuned down, but need to check it a few times a year. usually a 1/8 or 1/4 turn is all that's needed.

    Back in 1993 I bought a brand new Gibson Les Paul studio. Last year I adjusted the neck for the first time and I only had to turn the truss rod nut by a 1/3 turn. Not bad for 28 years. Spend the extra and by quality.

    Hey Dave. Brand shiny new MM Sterling CA5. Action is too lowand has some fret buzz on open and lower neck fretting.Before I set intonation, question. Should I attempt to raise the bridge saddles to correct or use the truss rod to raise action(only toward the nut end of the neck) ? Fret buzz only occurs on open string pluck and lower register plucking. I don't wantan extreme bow in the middle of the neck. Thanks in advancefor your experienced ballsackness advice.

    You don't get a lot of those because Ernie Ball Music Man makes the finest mass produced solidbody electric guitars and basses in the world. They're solid as rocks, set up perfectly right from the factory, and almost never fail electronically if used remotely normally. Ask anyone who owns one (more likely, several).

    Dave , I really hope sometime someone sends you a sterling by music man Sub Ray 4 bass... its the cheapest musicman style bass you can get that isnt counterfeit. Its literally like the below squire version of ernie ball... ernie ball goes.. EB USA , then Sterling, then sterling by music man.. Its actually a pretty decent bass though. Mine could use a setup and I just dont know how to do it. I can adjust a truss rod and have on my bass.. but Id love to get the intonation etc. right.
    Cheers bro.
    P.S.- If anyone cant afford a good fender jazz bass and wants a good alternative.. check out the peavey milleniuim bxp basses. I have a 2003-2004 model that I love.

      Once you put on new strings, set the truss rod and adjust string height at the bridge, use a good accurate tuner and tune each string using the 12th fret harmonic. Then check the fretted note at the 12th fret. If it is flat, adjust that string's saddle to move toward the neck, shortening it's length and that will pull it up into tune. Check often as you adjust! If it is flat, adjust it at the bridge in the opposite direction. Repeat for each string and you're done!

    • @dennytroy
      @dennytroy 3 месяца назад +1

      Just the opposite. If it’s too loose the strings will pull the neck forward and the action (space between strings and fret board) will be higher, but if you tighten it too much then you’ll get fret buzz. That’s why you need to check it especially if you live in an area where the weather changes with the seasons.

      +Matt Marshall Squier Vintage Modified Jazz Bass. CANNOT go wrong. 300 some odd bucks, plays just like the real deal. Sounds like it too.

      +Matt Marshall Subs sound great for the money, but Bailey Woodroffe has a good point, much more versatile with the jazz. I have the P Bass special Vintage Modified and love it for it's authentic P Bass tone and being able to use the jazz bridge pickup for jazz bass and other tones.

    How come another guy's playing bass with that Luke band you were with?

    • @willford8475
      @willford8475 8 лет назад

      Sorry, Gooch City. The new guy looks like a right fucking jerk anyway! Joking aside, all their songs sounded the same to me. Keep up your great videos, I really enjoy them. p.s. In one of you videos I wonder if you could show how your Paterson (?) guitar tuner works? I'd love one but they are the equivalent of about USD 800.00 here in Europe. Cheers mate.

    graphite neck bass/guitar. they dont even have a trussrod i believe xP

    • @KamiDisturbed
      @KamiDisturbed 8 лет назад

      +Dave's World of Fun Stuff those graphite necks are always straight, they dont bend like at all so theres no need to set the neck relief i think. i never owned one but thats what ive heard of them. mark king uses a status graphite bass and i think they use always graphite necks.
