This is my arrangement of the Saint-Saëns bassoon sonata for the bass oboe. (The bass oboe is a somewhat rare instrument pitched an octave below the oboe. It's like a giant English horn.) This is one of my all-time favorite pieces.

Played by two different people, this would be awesome. With the same guy playing piano and XXL oboe -- beyond belief.

I honestly see so much potential in the Bass oboe but even if Bass oboes were made regularly I don’t think many oboist or bassoonist would want to play it (I play clarinet).

Despite despising the larger works of Saint-Saëns, I love that sonata. You know what work I'd listen to with this kind of substitution? Debussy's Cello Sonata.

Not that I've heard it played a ton, but this is the most beautiful bass oboe playing I've ever heard. My only complaint is that the audio balance is is a bit off - the piano somewhat overpowers the bass oboe.

I must complement the artistic ability on the oboe and the piano as well. But importantly, I must compliment the skill with which the instruments were miked, and then mixed for balancing. Without the skillful choice of microphone, placement and then mixing, a beautiful piece would come off hollow and disappointing. All the Best , Rob

It is so hard to find bass oboe reeds. Also many people who play double reeds do not have the time to make their own reeds. There are so many challenges. If only Legere would create synthetic reeds for english horn and bass oboe....
