It's early in the morning and it was great to "tag along" with you on this walking tour thru the nursery learning about these shrubs. I really like these types of videos from you. Hugs to the pups.
You confirmed my opinion of variegated boxwood! I didn’t see any autumn ferns. Keep them in urns flanking my north facing front door. Thanks for all you do, Jim!
This was just Great. I need shade plants, had no idea there were so many. I started a shade save folder on here with this video, I'm pretty sure it's the only one I'll ever need. Thanks again.
I love these nursery tours Jim, keep them coming! Regarding Camelias, do you have a preferred time of year to transplant them? I have 1 sasanqua and 1 japonica that I think are getting too much sun on the west side of my house. I plan on moving them to the north side of my house. I live in zone 8b on the west coast. Thank you!
Maybe it’s too late but I’ve binge watched many of his and other videos. He has moved several shrubs and I believe he recommended doing so in their dormant periods.
What are those tall tall trees providing all that shade? Lover your channel, just bought a 1/4 acre .., This channel stirs up lots of ideas! In my zone 9b. We do get some short frosts but 1.5-2 months of extreme heat.. 105-114. If you can touch on tips for that would greatly appreciated! Thank you!
Very interesting and informative as usual. I just discovered 'Halley's Comet' thanks to you. However very difficult to find in France. Will keep hunting. Bonne journée!
Do all Acuba spread so vigorously underground? I just pulled one out because I hated how it got black leaves from some late afternoon sun in the summer. But that thing great far and wide! It’s in the middle of my mahonia which will be a bear to get out since they are so prickly!
great tour of shade shrubs. I noticed 2 native shrubs, mahonia soft caress and Illicium florida sunshine, are there more you can recommend that are under 6 feet (short to medium range)?
Thanks, great suggestions. Just watched one of your foundation plants vids and saw Bordeaux mentioned. I’ll definitely add these to the list, much appreciated.
Hi Jim. I’m going to redo an area that has overgrown old Mahonia that were planted a long time ago. I really dislike it since it reseeds everywhere. The area only gets maybe 2 hrs of sun. I’m in Zone 7a and was wondering what what you plant since I can’t decide. Love the soft caress mahonia and other dwarf type shrubs. Thanks
Hey Jim, my camellias have been blooming for about three weeks now. They are absolutely covered with blooms. I don't know the variety, as they were here when I moved in three years ago. Does that seem earlier than usual? Do you have any idea of what the variety might be? They are medium pink, not quite double, and they bloom profusely. That's probably an impossible question, but I thought I'd ask. I'm in Zone 8a, Birmingham area. I enjoy your videos very much! Thanks!
I am going to pick up 5 pots of camellia next week from a seller. I live in Maryland zone 7a. Should I plant them right away since I have heard people say because the room temperature is high and inside the house is very dry because of the heat, some camellia died. Please let me know what soil do I need to buy from Homed Depot. Thanks
You were saying "these are ready to go out for the fall season," are the same things sold in fall as in spring or is there a difference? If there is a difference could you please describe it?
The Camellia sasanquas like Jean May would like about half and half sun and shade. They do great in the clay as long as you elevate them a little when you plant them.
Can any of the illicium handle moist conditions? I have an area of dappled shade that has native fern and moss so I know it is moist but no standing water. Zone 8b nw Florida.
Hey Jim, love your videos. Some pretty nasty winds have been coming thru my area this morning. Couple trees coming down, and some of my potted plants got knocked over. No major damage though thankfully. Hope you and your garden are okay
I had all my Camellias in pretty deep shade as well. It was a good spot to keep them away from everything else. There are times of the year that they need very little water.
I have individual plant videos for most of these plants, if you want more information. Thanks for watching.
Your the best! Your my go to search if I need info about plants!
Thank you very much
Always love your observations. Years of experience clearly. Thank you.
I really enjoy the tours of nurseries in the area, also enjoy your input of the various plant types. Good job

I´m always happy to see more interesting plants, especially early or late bloomng ones, so thanks for this video!
Great to see you in the neighborhood. My favorite nursery. Thanks for the detailed info as always!

I really like Autumn ferns. That first row I started on had lots of ferns that I skipped over
Enjoy your tours even tho I cannot grow most of those plants in my zone 5 garden.
An excellent list of classic shade plants for southeast. Very useful, I watched twice. Thanks!
Thank you for all you do! I learn an incredible amount from your videos.
Thanks Jim. I deal with lots of shade and deer so many of these are great choices for me.
Thanks for watching Judy!

Great video to save for my shaded areas. Thanks for taking us along. I’ll take one of each. 😁
Great tour with so many plants 🌱 which one would you recommend to grow in shady spot (3 hours of morning sunlight)? With colorful flowers 🌺
Wow so calm, I would love to see the leaves change :)
Thanks for the great tour Jim👍
Thanks for watching it!!
Enjoyed the education of plants.
I love these nursery tours Jim, keep them coming!

Love how this nursery is laid out. Really natural surroundings. So easy to view/shop this way! All of the specimens seem super healthy!
Great video. Full of information. 👍🏻
I want that nirihara mahonia now! 🌿😍

I love fallen leaves!
Great thorough list!! Thank you!!

Thank you for sharing your knowledge!

Nothing goes in my yard without running it past your channel 1st zone 7B
I’ve ordered from there. Great place

Short shade natives are tough to come by. Definitely dwarf Yaupon hollies and Inkberry Hollies.
Thanks, great suggestions. Just watched one of your foundation plants vids and saw Bordeaux mentioned. I’ll definitely add these to the list, much appreciated.
I’m in love with the Camelias but they died on me so I just stop trying with them... thanks for the show Mr Putnam

There are 1000s of named Camellia sasanquas unfortunately, bit only a few sold in the trade. You may be able to match it in a close by garden center
Very nice specimens, unfortunately most out of my zone 😩 thanks for sharing 👍❤️😊
Very interesting video! I chatted with you on the tour!😂🤣❤❤❤
That's super funny😂
@@JimPutnam 🤣🤣🤣
What? I love my variegated English boxwood. It’s healthy looking and bushy. I keep it in full sun.
Good, I'm sure lots of people would like them. That's the beauty of having so many choices. Thanks for watching 😊
Thank you!!
Hi, I'm in the UK, and know that 'Sweet Box' is Sarcococca Confusa, but what is 'Plum Yew'?

Does the variegated gardenia grow flowers like gardenias?
Hi, pittosporum only for shades or for the sun too?
Do camelias do well in clay soil? Also, the Jean May---how much shade will it take?
The Camellia sasanquas like Jean May would like about half and half sun and shade. They do great in the clay as long as you elevate them a little when you plant them.
@@JimPutnam Thank you so much for the information. I really enjoyed this video. A lot of great ideas!

Thank you. I am on the gulf coast this week and went through the hurricane last night. Good luck with your cleanup. Thank for watching my videos.
How can we find out when they’ll have a public sale?
They are open on Saturdays in the spring. They also are set up at the state farmers market in Raleigh spring and fall
Just thinking about all those plastic pots ending up in the refill
any reason why their sasanquas are in kinda deep shade?
I had all my Camellias in pretty deep shade as well. It was a good spot to keep them away from everything else. There are times of the year that they need very little water.
