The Grateful Dead are the grandfathers of jam bands. They're the reason we have jam bands going on yearly tours. They created the live touring concert scene. The Dead might be the longest live touring band there ever was. But more than anything they created a lifestyle and a family of people that endured for decades.

The boys in the band, Left to Right: Jerry Garcia-Guitar and Vocals, Brent Mydland-Keyboards and Vocals, Bill Kreutzman-Drums, Bob Weir-Guitar and Vocals, Phil Lesh-Bass and Vocals and Mickey Hart-Percussion. This version of the band existed from very late 1979 until the Fall of 1990, when Brent passed from an OD. Saw an "Althea" my first Grateful Dead show, 9/6/80 in Lewiston, Maine, and only one more, out of 50 more shows, until 1995, when Jerry Garcia passed, from a Heart Attack. More goodies from the band: "Truckin' ", "U.S. Blues", "Shakedown Street", "Terrapin Station", "Sugar Magnolia", "Scarlet Begonias>Fire On The Mountain". Only about 450 more to go. College AND NBA Hall Of Famer Bill Walton (RIP) was a HUGE Grateful Dead fan, he attended over 800 of their concerts.

Their jams particularly proved healing and meaningful, at times spiritual, aligned with mid '80's what-the-hey 'moderation' shroom trippin and microdosing+ on some very consistent single-source vitamin A blotter, during an otherwise exceptionally high-stressing period in life. Never a bad time with the Dead.

Sold out MSG six nights in a row for twenty years, provided a taping section for fans to set up recording gear, and would even provide a daisy chain off of the sound board, the Dead is all about Live shows with lots of "Jamming out"
.A whole culture formed around the dead, people would tour the band going to each show and living off of the Black Market that could be found in the parking lot, known as Shakedown Street.
The big thing was tape trading before the internet came around. folks would trade live tapes by mail. If your gonna check out the Dead, the best stuff is the live stuff. I saw them in 1991 at MSG Sept 19 on my birthday, I had to camp out overnight to buy tickets.
The biggest LSD dealer in history was their soundman, Owsley. Jerry Garcia ( Lead Guitar-Vocals) was part of the Timothy Leary acid experiments. Also, when the Merry Pranksters were doing the Acid Test Events traveling around in the Further Bus, they were known as the Warlocks and where the house band for the Acid Test.

The reason most choose live versions, although the Dead put out quality recorded songs, is because their live versions are fire most of the time. And they are played slightly different most of the time. Over 2300 shows between 1965 - 1995. And not one show exactly the same as another. The remaining members still play to sold out and nearly sold out crowds in the US and Mexico.

My advice is that you do NOT listen to live Dead until you have ten or so studio versions under your belt. There are literally hundreds to chose from. Once you get a feel for their style then dip you toes into the live pool. You have to remember that most of the people commenting on listening to the Dead live, went to a large number of live shows, myself included. That changes your perspective of the music because the scene was always part of the music.
