Jonghyun's song is a cover/rewrite of Alejandro Sanz's "Y si fuera Ella," so most people just call it by its original Spanish title, but Jonghyun's version is called "Hyeya" or"Haeya". Haeya is the girl's name (which I understand translates to "her" or "she") that Jonghyun is singing about that is why it's the only word in the English lyrics that isn't translated because there isn't a translation, it's a name. Jonghyun heard the Spanish song and he and his manager loved it so much that Jonghyun had to make it his own -- with the help of Kenzie, one of SM's main songwriters -- by translating and reworking it into Korean and changing it slightly to make it fit his vision of what the song's message was about. This was one of Jonghyun's most epic and iconic performances of this song. And it will forever be a symbol of what made him such a great artist.
In the performance the explosion you heard was not a gunshot, but it was his heart exploding. He felt so passionately about the girl that his heart literally exploded. The song is about how the girl, Haeya, left him and he is in pain because she is no longer with him. The whole song is him begging her to come back to him. He loves her so much that he is dying from the pain of being seperated from her, etc.
This was Jonghyun's very first solo single and he was only 18 when this song was first released -- only a few months after SHINee's debut in 2008 -- so this just goes to show you how amazing of an artist he really was. (This specific performance was at their SHINee World Concert II (SWC2) in Seoul in 2012, so he is about 22 here.) His mastery of singing, emotion and stage presence is awe inspiring. If he was this good so early in his career, you can see why he has become so highly respected after more than 10 years in the industry.
Hence, why Jonghyun is known as one of the best singers in the industry, and SHINee are one of the top groups that are known for the fact that they all can do it all. They really are one of the most well rounded groups in Kpop that excel at every aspect of the entertainment industry. It's easy to see why everyone looks up to them.
Jonghyun was highly respected for his songwriting and composing skills. He was one of the very first Idols to be recognized as a songwriter and he became one of the most prolific songwriters and composers of his generation. He was the first SM Idol to have a fully self-written album. And all his albums following that were written and composed or co-composed by him. His legacy includes several dozen songs credited to him. It's one of the things that all Shawols hold onto as part the legend that he left behind that we feel is our duty to share with the world in order to keep his memory alive.
He also wrote about 40% of SHINee's songs and several songs for other artists, such as EXO's "Playboy," Lee Hi's "Breathe," IU's "Gloomy Clock" and Taemin's "Pretty Boy" and "Already," among others.
He was special, and it's songs like this where you can see how powerfully he felt about everything he did. One of the things that he was known for was the fact that he was full of love and compassion for everyone and everything in this world, and he often wore his heart on his sleeve. When he performed you could feel every emotion flowing from his being. That's what made him such a great singer/songwriter, but it was also what I think caused him to feel so much pain. He took everything so personally, both the good and the bad and he never thought he was good enough. He did so much good in his short 27 years and he left behind a great legacy, however, his time was much too short.
He really was one of the greats. People say that when he walked into a room you could feel his star power, and yet he was so humble and down to earth that everyone instantly wanted to be his friend.
You did well Jonghyun, our beautiful angel and diamond in the sky.

hyeya doesn't translate to her or she, korean doesn't actually usually use third-person pronouns that way at all but the word used for her/she in songs or other writing would be 그녀 "geunyeo". 혜야 "hyeya" would probably be a nickname for a female name ending in 혜 "hye" like jihye, plus the 야 "ya" ending which is affectionate or diminuitive to add to the names of people close to you which end in a vowel (e.g. you might hear minho's friends call him minho-ya).
this man wasnt just a singer or performer - jonghyun was a true artist and he put so much of himself into everything he did. he was really a one of a kind idol and we're so lucky that he shared his talents with us in the short time that we had him. im so glad that he continues to live on in his works. people deserve to experience him.

Fun fact Jonghyun recorded this first before his debut. And he was 18 when he first sang it live on Korean tv. After it was added to their shinee album he did this performance of it and their concert. It was the last time he ever sang it.
You have to hear the cover of this song singing by Kyuhyun from Super Junior, he sang this song in "Masked Singers" as a tribute for Jonghyun (They were very close friends), his mask was the genie and the performance was... it get me chills every time I hear it💙

You need to watch "End of a Day." The Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra also performed this, and it brought tears to my eyes. I wish Jonghyun could have heard it. His songwriting and voice touched so many people.

I think this performance was at one of their earlier SHINee world concerts, so he would have still been in his early-20s. Absolutely stunning. Can you imagine what it would have sounded like with 20-30 more years of experience and maturity behind it? And if anyone has questions about live/studio capabilities, watch the live recording of him singing You're My Lady, or End of a Day, or Beautiful Tonight, or the trio In My Room with Onew and Key, or many others.
Sometimes I wonder if maybe I just have a bias, I'm a "Stan", or whatever. Then I see yet another performance and I get blown away all over again. A true master of his art.
Jjong is a one of a kind performer! He's got insane stage presence, so many of his live stages are stunning. He's a vocalist of his generation for me, his voice is so unique in tone and timbre, and the versatility and control he has is breath-taking. Try Crazy live in Tokyo (2016) or End of a Day live (2015) like woow 💎

I told myself I would never, ever listen to this song again. This was the very last time he ever sang/performed this song.
Knowing the words, even back then, and then losing him.. I’ve just never been able to come back to this one despite how gorgeous the song is and how well Jonghyun made it his own.

Jonghyun was definitely blessed with his beautiful voice. He was a great artist and will never be forgotten or replaced.

Also reminds me of kyuhyun sing this song in the king of mask singer show specially for jonghyun.. and his speech at the end was heartbreaking cause they were very close since trainee and he was in military when he passed away so he regretted and cried a lot.. kyuhyun also skipped the line saying I don’t want to live when he sings the song it’s so sad💔

This amazing artist lives in my heart ever since I discovered him and I listen to at least one song from him daily. His discography is fantastic. Cocktail and Hallelujah two of my most favourites. In terms of live performances this one and “Wildflower” of Park Hyoshin break me down every time no matter how often I watch them.

Jonghyun is known for his vocal acrobatics so I would highly recommend to everyone to watch Deja-Boo live especially the one where he appears on Tablo's radio show on MBC. Just shows how insane the control over his vocals was. The She Is radio performance is also amazing.

I got curious about the original artist a few years ago and watched his video. I can tell you Jonghyun sang this song 100 times better! He really made it his own.

I heard him before his debut with Shinee. He had my heart than and he still has it. I've never heard another voice that brings me to tears. Rest now, you worked so hard. ❤
I would love to see you react to Kyuhyun's (super junior) cover of this version from King of Masked Singer. Many of the songs he did while being the Genie character were in dedication to Jonghyun, since he had passed away shortly before. They were both really close, and Kyu was in the military when Jonghyun died, so he didn't get to say goodbye until much later.
Oh, I was waiting for you to watch this. Nothing tops this performance!! Nobody!! If you watch IU's MV "Eight", the lizzard turned dragon is Jonghyun and the girl running down the hill is Sulli. In the ending scene, the dragon and girl are flying in the opposite direction of IU in the plane. The girl and IU look at each other with tears in their eyes. Get's me every time! It's so hard to believe that this precious person is no longer with us. I miss him so much!

I recommend you to listen super Junior kyuhyun version. He singed this same song to honour his friend, a different kind of emotion but in the end you clearly feel saddenes in his voice. Those two were close friend so when he passed away kyuhyun was in the army so the king of the masked singer he dedicated his songs to his friend hope that his voice reach him
