    Paul McCartney in Red Square, Moscow.
    Completely surreal for those of us who remember the cold war years. Worth watching.

    This video is awesome! In 1964, who could have predicted that Paul McCartney would play Beatles music in Moscows Red Square?

    Maybe I'm alone in this, but I think a lot of McCartney's solo music is just as good as The Beatles.

      I agree in part - the really good stuff is just as good, but it’s a much lower percentage than the Beatles’ ratio of amazing songs / total songs released. Which is not at all surprising, considering that John Lennon, in particular, and George Harrison were both incredible songwriters in their own right.

    Most people get deterred by his lack of several phenomenal albums and individual songs during his solo career, as well as throughout his Wings career. However, because of this, many of those same people also miss out on many wonderful gems. Normally I enjoy listening to 3-5 songs on each solo album just for easy listening, or whatnot. However, I can enjoy more if I'm in the mood to go on a journey with Sir Paul :)

      Wings "Band On The Run" won 3 grammy awards and most of the remaining Wings albums were chart toppers. You're correct about recent solo albums though.

    Jan here, borrowing Dan's acct to comment. I love Paul's work. I love this song. So simple, but so powerful. And I found this rendition by accident today in the midst of Russia invading Ukraine. We had so much hope when musicians like this could perform in Red Square and offer such a radical message of opening up to the world. The video playing behind the band is not just another clever montage -- it was a message to his audience to let go of the past and embrace the future. I wonder how many who were standing there that night remember this concert? How many in this audience believe the stories the Russian media is spinning about Ukraine? I pray the Russian people find a way to let the plight of the Ukraine into their hearts and protest, but mostly keep hoping the world will make more music and less war.

    At 1:10 the poor guards can't enjoy the show. LOL at the look on his face!

    • @Zholobov1
      @Zholobov1 4 года назад +1

      Yeah, they were standing in one line in front of the first standing sector (in the Red Square the sitting sector was situated closer to the stage) and were facing the first rows of us with such a fear in their eyes, as if we were going to rush on them immediately. In fact, they were somehow disturbing. I remember, I shouted at one of the guards when Paul had appeared on stage to step aside, because I could not properly see my favourite artist. I didn't come to see the face of a guard in front of me, anyway, I came to see Paul McCartney! That was a surreal thing, really. That wasn't that guy's fault, so I immediately felt guilty because of my sudden burst of rage, but he steeped back and didn't come closer anymore. Anyway I found a perfect way to not let him come closer: everytime I felt someone was trying to stand between me and Paul, I began singing as loud as I could. Nobody wanted to become deaf so they never came closer. Another man from the first row in the crowd shouted at the guards: "Why are you here? Do you really think we're gonna run to the stage or do something terrible? Do you think we're those crazy jerks going to the heavy metal shows? It’s Paul McCartney!!! We're normal, we're civilized!" 😆😆😆

    • @Zholobov1
      @Zholobov1 4 года назад +1

      @Rose FabFour they were regular army soldiers, serving in the Kremlin military squadron and sent by their authorities to control the crowd in the square. I met one of them years later when he had already left the military service, and he told me he was there in the square during PM's show. He was never a McCartney fan and those circumstances certainly couldn't help him become one. I can't imagine myself being a beatlefan standing there with my back to the stage for three long loud crazy hours and not having a chance to actually see and enjoy my favourite artist.

    • @Zholobov1
      @Zholobov1 4 года назад

      @Rose FabFour they hadn't got weapons anyway, so their presence was in fact useless. That’s why those young boys looked so confused. I don't know who's idea that was to put them in the square in front of us: I don't remember any soldiers to observe the audience in St. Petersburg year later, for example. So well, that looked ridiculous in Moscow, as if Paul McCartney himself wanted them to be there to make an exotic entourage for his future film. He even demanded to remove the scaffold off St. Basil's Cathedral, as you can see it’s on the background behind the stage. But the Moscow authorities didn't give their permission to interrupt the process of Cathedral's restoration.

    • @Zholobov1
      @Zholobov1 4 года назад

      @Rose FabFour thank you! You right, I simply forgot about Putin's visit to Moscow show! From where I was standing I couldn't see him, and as far as I remember nobody in the area around me guessed it was Putin the sitting crowd cheered at. So when Paul said: "Privet rebyata" (hello, guys) again, I didn't get what was all about. Only when I saw the finished documentary half a year later, it became clear there was our president in the audience.
