A bit of a unique situation for me, as I cut off half of my middle finger several years ago (on my left dominant hand). So until about six months ago, I still had weird tingling at the remaining 'tip' (about 3/8" past middle joint) of that finger which forced me to use an index finger fulcrum. Most folks teach index finger fulcrum to beginners anyway. Problem for me was that my weak hand had terrible stick control with an index finger fulcrum so I felt a bit of frustration. Now some numbness has set in on my stubby middle finger so I am able to use middle finger fulcrum on both hands and that helps with my stick confidence. Weak hand has been slow to develop skilz and still have a lonnngggg ways to go, but it feels much better with a middle finger fulcrum.
Last night at a pub gig near the end of the second set my hands began to cramp up, principally in the muscles at the base of my thumbs. No pain per se, the cramping interfered with maintaining the beat in the middle of the song. A real panic moment! I was probably dehydrated despite drinking fluids (not beer) but the real issue I believe was endurance hampered by lack of technique and/or limited practice time. Both of which you addressed in this video. I will henceforth deploy your grip change recommendation and practice techniques to restore the endurance I took for granted in my youth (I’m 70) … cheers
I used to use index finger, but i switched to middle after binging a bunch of your videos one day. It only took a day or two to get used to it and i definitely feel like it's helped me more.
I use an Indexfinger fulcrum, but on the first joint. As an ex-deathmetal drummer, who went on break of the drums (mainly because of opportunity) for 6 years and just starting back at the beginning, it is quite infuriating that i can't play like i used to. But thanks a lot, the exercises and the generell good vibes from your videos help me a lot in my journey back through my former best, to reaching new hights. Also your quite cheerful persona keeps me motivated :).
Just watched Alex Rudinger and other power hose drummers. Just relaxed grip and it keeps that way all the time no matter what surfaces or dynamics they play. Catching the stick after every stroke.
Just hurt my thumb joint and have been out of jamming. After watching this video I think I got the preventative action- use middle finger and move the stick closer to the thumb. Thanks!!!
I have had this trouble for years! I have just got used to using my arm swing to slowly crawl my grip back up the stick, and also to focus more on being aware when my grip has begun to slide. I would love to know if you've found any tools to help prevent this from happening x
I'm glad you touched on this topic there's not a lot of people talk about the arms they always talk about the wrists and everything has to go in sync and also the shoulder hinge for the molar stroke or system with
It's interesting how my grip has changed since I started playing about 2 1/2 years ago. Went from a very pinchy index/thumb grip. Not comfortable, but felt I had more control as I was learning. Stick began to move up the index finger. Started to have pain in it after prolonged playing. Went to middle finger fulcrum due to that. Much better. Now I'm pretty close to what you are demonstrating. Seemed to naturally progress to that position. I'm going to see if I can refine it using your lesson here. Thanks!
I've got practice pad for now. I had been using a index finger grip but, I will shift to middle finger for better control. Thanks for posting these videos very helpful for a beginner 🦄🙃
Hi @Stephen Clark. I had a look at your playlists and you don't have a playlist on the grip. It would be great to see one because you have a lot to say about grip and its foundational
I use index fulcrum and middle fulcrum in turn, and I can't tell exactly when each flucrum I use))) when I watched this video, I testing middle fulcrum on high tempo, and I like it. Muscle trick at the beginning of the video is amazing. I'm becoming more and more convinced that in order to play drums well, you need to understand a little the anatomy of your body.
Great lessons! I downloaded your basics guide and I quickly learned that I can’t read all of the notations. Can you recommend a good guide so that I can learn the notes and what they mean?
Newbie. Stick control from the back of the stick. Gordy Knudtson (30 year Steve Miller drummer) on RUclips. Virtually no pinching to create a fulcrum. Stick LAYS over middle finger like a teeter tawters fulcrum, back fingers always in contact with stick, (no squeezing stick anywhere), index finger relaxed, occasionally rapping around the stick for further control( no squeezing between index and thumb or middle finger and thumb). No moving fulcrum up and down middle finger. One grip, except for French grip and finger strokes. Been watching your videos for a month now and respect your experience. What are your thoughts on controlling the stick in this manner? Thanks
This upload is amazingly timed hahaha Recently I struggled with this exact problem, so thanks for your help!!! (A bit off topic) but I also havr thr problem, that the stick slips and after a while Im holdinh the stick really at the end... Is there any way to fix it or do I need to change my grip? Thanks for your content, take care🔥🤟

This was very encouraging as I have had some recent tension in my thumb after playing drums at church two weeks ago. thank you for sharing
Have you been watching me? Because I've been having issues in these exact areas and this video has helped immensely.
