- The Wiz is a 1978 American musical adventure fantasy film directed by Sidney Lumet and produced by Rob Cohen. A reimagining of L. Frank Baum's classic 1900 children's novel The Wonderful Wizard of Oz featuring an all-Black cast, the film was loosely adapted from the 1974 Broadway musical of the same title. It follows the adventures of Dorothy, a shy, twenty-four year old Harlem schoolteacher who finds herself magically transported to the urban fantasy Land of Oz, which resembles a dream version of New York City. Befriended by a Scarecrow, a Tin Man and a Cowardly Lion, she travels through the city to seek an audience with the mysterious Wiz, who they say is the only one powerful enough to send her home.

I still love ❤️ this movie till this day. I haven’t seen it in years and it still makes me cry with happiness. R.I.P to the King Michael Jackson
That subway scene and Evilene scared me when I was a child 😂
Lol Especially when her fingers curled back!
Subway scene also freaked me out as a child!!
The subway scene traumatized me
What even was that gimpy thing? And his inflatable puppet toys grew into monsters. 🤭😰 So trippy and creepy!!
ME TOO!😮
That scene where they shift colors when Dorothy & her crew arrive to see the wizard was amazing nobody was dressed the same everyone was wearing different outfits the costume designers really went to town.
My number one favorite movie of all time, reminds me of my child years. I'm 29 now...reminds me of sitting in the living room in the dark watching this movie with my sister while our mom is in the kitchen cooking chicken lol if I could rewind time ⏲
All star cast. Stellar soundtrack. Scary a** scenes lol. Back in '78 as a kid first watching this I was spooked out by the monkeys and whatever that was in the subway station lol
The subway station scene was HORRIFYING!😱
Yes! So much creepy in this movie. Total kindtrauma. Freaked me out as a little boy, but was also fascinated and gave this suburban White boy an insight into Black pop culture. It was beautiful.
This is the one movie that transcends genre and will always be the number one favorite/best movie of all time for me, that subway scene (and the song before it) are literally the reason lions are my favorite animal...and Diana Ross played that role in a way that I never even questioned her age and the older I more the more I actually did start to appreciate her performance just as much as Mike and Ted (who are hands down my favorites)
I watched the Wiz before I ever saw the Wizard of Oz. My Momma said it was a Black right of passage. 😁
my friends and I used to crack up at the way Diana Ross hysterically screams ToToOoOo?!?!? lol
😂
First of all, your EAR -- everything you sang was in the correct key. Work it out! Second, this is my FAVORITE movie of ALL time. The fact that you know these lines...this video just did my heart proud!! Thank you 🙏🏾.
Wow, thank you! ❤
I like this movie, but I still feel that Stephanie Mill should have had this part. The sudway scene was really scary
I totally respect that; Stephanie is a brilliant artist.
The day MJ died I bought it from best buy remembered every song while I was crying
I was six in 78 when I first saw The Wiz and it was my favorite movie.I have the DVD and made sure input my kids up on it!
Great video. The Wiz is such a cult masterpiece of trippy, pop-Black filmmaking. Too many people hate on this movie, but on multiple viewings, it is a true epic treasure. Creepy, exotic and artistically unique. And yes, I am a White man.
ps ~ you are beautiful
It’s always the red for me!!! ❤️🌹♥️❣️‼️💃🏾🚨🚨🚨
I saw this Movie back in Elementary school on a Class Trip 😁
Me too! I remember going as a kid in elementary school and being scared to death watchin it
Ima 97 baby, but my moms put me onto THE WIZ when I was 9 years old. I've loved this movie ever since
This is a Black American classic!!
Sweet thing let me tell you bout.., the way this movie scared me as a child. But once I got older this became one of my all time favorites. I love that you covered this!!
😂😂😂 Thank You and you are clearly not alone!
@@StruggleReviewzTV it was the kids coming out the walls d’or me. It reminded me too much the creatures in Ghost.
It scared the s h i out of me too.the scarecrow to be exact , something about his skin and that reeses paper nose. Dont get me started on those accordion doll things that grew bigger and bigger. I love it now though lol
MY FAVORITE FILM OF ALL TIME!!!
Great review! Fun fact about Diana Ross>>> Barry Gordy actually told her NO to portraying Dorthy because he felt she was too old to play a teenager (she was 33 at the time) but she wanted the role so bad that she convinced a movie producer to cast her in exhange of her getting him to become executive producer. Basically she would help him so that he could help her lol. It worked and Gordy had no choice but to go with it given the financial circumstances. They wrote a script that changed Dorothy's character into being a 24 year old teacher, struggling with fears of figuring out who she was independently. Overall I think it worked, but it would have been great to see Stephanie Mills in the movie since she did so well in the broadway production.
The Wiz is one of those movies that has its flaws, but it still makes a fun & nostalgic watch. Everytime I catch it on tv, I have to watch it!
Thank you!
I loved the heartfelt acting , relatable humor, magnificent music and extraordinary dancing/choreography. Moreover, this film was successful in my eyes, showcasing some of our distinct American Black culture-ism. I love all of the characters but the lion is my favorite character. However, Michael sang every song brilliantly.
Shady fact about why Diana Ross was Dorothy in the movie instead of a much younger Stephanie Mills: Despite her manager Berry Gordy's discouragement, she managed to convince the film's exec producer, Rob Cohen, to arrange a deal where he would produce the film if she was cast as Dorothy. Since Berry was on a budget and needed that extra funding for production purposes, he caved and gave Ms. Diana Ross the Boss the part. She got her way.
I heard that story too.
THIS is my FAVORITE musical! 😍
The subway scene is HIGHkey scary AF, LOL. I'm 43 years old bae, and that scen still creeps me OWT, 😳😂😆 The lil black dude who shows up when the weird flute is played still takes me out
I forgot this video was here! I’ve gotten so much better with my editing and doing videos in a timely fashion I may do this review again ❤️
@@StruggleReviewzTV please do a other one!! 💙💙
I cannot even tell you about the love of this movie. Very seventies! No Bad News is my favorite song. Those motorcycle “monkeys” gave me nightmares back in the day though. Cult classic movie at its best! Keep it going lady!
Thank You!!!! 😂❤️
No Bad News is my favorite too!!
One of my favorite version of the wizard of oz great review so underrated
Thank you for singing throughout the video. I was really vibing to it 😎
An incredible review. I feel the same exact way. I felt like I was discussing the film with a best friend 😄. I loved your singing and keen observations. U hv gained a new subscriber! The shade was hilarious 😆. #40
Thumbs up to you for your super thanks. 👍
I love your singing and recitation of the dialogue. The movie is brilliant and unique but, has always creeped me out. Your review reminds me of how special the movie is.
I agree with you - the music is such an important component to this film. In fact if my history is correct, music composer Charlie Smalls was hired by Kenneth G. Harper to create the awesome songs for the original Broadway play. Bro. Smalls was then attached to the 1978 film adaptation which allowed him to create new music and songs with this new envisioning of the story! Fun fact, Today (Oct. 25th) is Charlie Smalls' birthday. He would have been 78 years old. I thank him for his contributions. And yours as well. Great review.✊🏾
Thank you for watching ❤️
Seen this on a school trip when it came out. Love this movie so much.
One of my favorite movies..It did flop when it first came out but it began to find new life as years went on...Now its a cult classic...You can appreciate the message about family and, the costumes were dope for its time as well...We as young melanated kids finally got a chance to see ourselves in a children's fantasy film for once.
My only 2 complaints about the Wiz was Mable King who played Evillene the evil witch not having enough screen time...And even though casting Diane Ross may have been a good ideal to boost the budget & assure a box office success, I too still feel as though Stephanie Mills should have been given the role...It could have been some colorism involve in the decision not to cast Stephanie as well.
And I agree with your assessment on Michael...Off The Wall is still my favorite album over Thriller...It was more soulful.
And started a direction based off of what worked. Good post
Your description of the flying monkeys was spot on!!!!🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
You spit facts on the performance of Diana! She is royalty but you hit it on the mark.
Thank you that was hard to say I love her! 😂
@@StruggleReviewzTV Artist try different things for results. She did it and you gave a good review but it didn't deter the greatness of the film.
@@StruggleReviewzTV plan to do any music reviews? 90s r&b or rock and some hip hop maybe?
WOW! 😂 This was a fun review, & your singing voice is superb,I love the way you act like the scenes 😂😂😂 very hilariously well done. This is one my favorite movies, my mom's put on this, & you're right every kid is going grasp to the scenes. Shame on anyone who doesn't love this classic masterpiece 😊
Thank you 😊
This is one of my favorites from way back..Thanks for doing a break-down of it. ❤
I was fortunate to see The Wiz Broadway original cast in NYC when I was a kid and it was amazing. I absolutely loved the movie too. The subway accordion monsters always scares the crap outta
me. And….dayum, you fine.
Don’t forget-the late, great Luther Vandross’ contribution with “Everybody Rejoice”!
Check it… A week after watching this I was walking into a Harris Teeter (grocery store) and a Jeep pulled into the parking lot with a giant Wiz tire cover on the bac. 😳 Normal-looking brother stepped out, and I tried talking to him about the movie… But I think he got weirded out, ha ha. 🤷♂️
Just thought y’all would find it interesting there’s someone driving around my city sporting a (new looking) Wiz tire-cover.
You were having too much fun in this video 😂. My mom had showed this to my sister and I in the early 90's and we loved it ever since. ❤️
I’d highly recommend The Wiz LIVE
Thank you for another great review. I read somewhere that Jimmie Walker was suppose to played Scarecrow. He wasn’t able to due to his Good Times schedule.
Thank goodness for that!
@@StruggleReviewzTV Michael Jackson was the bettter choice.
I love how the scarecrow started bouncing while he was singing I just wanted to jump up and bounce along with him I love this movie sooo much
One of my favorite movies! Every time I watch it, I'm singing all the songs 🎵 my faaaaavorite scene is green, red, gold!!! Thanks for your review 💙

Hey girl hey!!!!!!! ABSOLUTELY MY FAVORITE movie💜💜💜💜
HEY MAMA!!!! 😂❤️
This was a great review of a GREAT MOVIE! I saw this in my teens and still know most of the songs till this day.
I really like the wiz it's a hip hop version of the classic story nobody could have pulled it off like Micheal dianna and Richard and the rest of the awesome cast and made Oz into an alternate version of New York this movie was in the theater when I was in the 8th grade I loved it then and still love it
I love dianna and micheals music Also this version rocks!
Fantastic Review. Your analysis of each character is brilliant. Love it.
Hey struggle this is the black version of the wizard of oz and can you review lady sings the blues and mahogany
That intro with the funk music, the green effect, and the snapping of the fingers is pretty fly. 😊
Not you jamming and singing the song but can’t lie those songs are amazing
My absolute favorite movie!!!!! ❤❤❤❤
he’s the Wiz and he lives in Us 💙💙 love the message. Great video peace n love
The emerald city sequence is my FAVORITE part of The Wiz!!❤💚💛

A phenomenal classic💯! Great review! 👍🏾👍🏾
Thank You!
So many genres of movies can benefit from setting it in the hood and from the black perspective
So happy I discovered your channel. New subscriber.
Thank you and welcome to the channel! ❤️
RIP to pretty much everybody who was in this movie 🙏🏽
I remember seeing this movie when I was 7 years old and I really enjoyed it very much Mabel King playing the wicked witch she was pretty creepy there's so many things that I remember from this movie the subway scene and which the trash cans had teeth and the guy with the two dolls are getting bigger and bigger The Monkees riding on the motorcycles was pretty cool when the graffiti people came out of the walls and so much more this version of The Wiz was so much better than the Wizard of Oz this version was more exciting and interesting it kind of reminded me of going to an all-white Church and the people are singing but without emotion and is dull and boring and then you go to a all black church people are singing and dancing and is very Lively and exciting
My son love this movie he got the movie and the costume
The crows scene in which Michael Jackson was talking with the crows they were all Jive kind of reminds me of the Disney movie Song of the South in which The Black Crowes we're talkin all Jive
Im 47 and saw this in the theater. My first nightmares. (do the math lol)
Did u know Luther Vandross wroth the song brand new day if u listen closely the 1st few words sung is Luther himself
Yes classic!
Yeah give it to your children to watch just go to really pay attention more the the scary freaky subway homeless peddler and whole whole subway scene because I’ve for myself since I was a child it’s kindergarten youth trauma scene that even gave me nightmares when I was always watching it often. So be very careful how they look and see that horror scene where it could do so to them in life getting older especially.
New subscriber here.. love how you tell the story.. Michael Jackson was my favorite character in this movie 🥰🥰
I remember getting fresh in my Fila suit and kicks and going to see this at the Cineramadome on Sunset in Hollywood with my brother. I was so excited to see the movie! I thought that Diana Ross was very, very, very much miscast! But, I get it, it's show BUSINESS. But I really would have rather seen anyone but her play Dorothy. I think that Dee from What's Happening could have done a better job!
Dianna was messing with Barry Gordy so she got the part.
@@feliciab5717 understood.
That’s not true! Universal pictures paid her a million dollars to do the movie. Berry had nothing to do with it! At that time it made Diana Ross one of the highest paid movie actresses. It was her star power.that got her the movie. Universal Studios would have never financed that huge budget with Stephanie Mills.
I hated the Orange springy things in the subway.
Oh The Wiz is definitely Blackity Black Black AF.
Girl you are so silly I gag every time I come across your video yes you always give us the business.... Almost makes me want to do a video collab with you can I be the scarecrow
Are you from DC?
I’m from Texas
Ok your beautiful 🙏🏽😊
I liked the music in the Wiz, but am I the only one who feels like it is 1 of the classics that could definitely be remade into a better movie visually.....the large dance seens are phenomenal, but some of the sets in the movie look terrible.
No no no you saw the mess that was Superfly
I understand that you had to put in that funk while saying The Wiz but saying Wiz just sounds wrong. I'm sorry but the name Wiz is like telling someone that you're going to the can and take a wiz. It's harsh but it's true. 😆
The 2015 version is bettet
not even close buddy,
@@user-uq8lw9uw2d in the 2015?version Dorothy is younger, the characters are more likable and OZ is more realistic
Nope😂
Exactly

😣...😫...🤮.
Diana Ross ruined this movie.
Ahem.... Dear Fellow Members of The Black Congregation, I have a confession. I've never liked Stephanie's voice.
