I like the idea that all the other Jokers are inspired by what Arthur Fleck did in the first movie. The one who shots his Batman’s parents, the Shankar of Fleck, and all the rest. I will say the over lay of Gotham and the Joker added to the OG movie. I don’t think it was just to make money, but actually helped the character idea actually work. It gave a place for us to look at where he was going and watch the threads come together. To me I felt like if you started with the Joker and said peel it back to a dark more realistic version.
I strongly disagree with the first like 3 and a half minutes of this video, while the first Joker wasn't directly adapting anything it was very clearly inspired by the comics. It pays several homages to the dark knight returns and to a lesser extent the killing joke. The character Gary is based heavily on the character Gaggy from the comics who was also a clown with dwarfism that was introduced in the 70s. The Joker inspiring riots in the streets with protesters in clown mask holding up signs comes from the 2012 run of Detective Comics. I think that maybe people just need to read more comic books before they say things like a movie based on them is entirely inaccurate to the source material.
Also Joker's characterization is heavily 70s based, not Arther but specifically when he's the Joker, the way he kinda messes with people, is very nihilistic, he smokes, he dances a lot, he has this overt confidence about him like he doesn't give a shit about anything but himself and his interests, it's very much like the character from the comics to me.
The movie was so disappointing. Could've gone into how Gotham is affected by the Joker and showed scenes of how people are even more divided in Gotham. Also, the Joker persona should've been built up more and I feel like if the studio is forcing you to make another film at least address what people had problems with in the second film. I think leaning into the comic book aspect of this film would've been great for comic book fans. Killing off Arthur at the end could have worked if they built up Gotham as a bigger character and Arthur knowing he left behind a legacy within Gotham and expressing that he everywhere implying that another Joker will rise up to take his place. Idk what they were doing with this, but Todd Philips could've tried.
I disagree with the notion that they had an idea for some guy and this was his story, then slapped Joker onto it. Even in concept, that doesn't make any sense. There's tie in to quite a few Batman related figures and aspects of the world that were clearly very intentional. Just because the movie is supposed to be very ordinary in circumstance instead of fantastical like a comic book, doesn't mean it was just scrapped together with a bunch of proper noun characters and places. Then the practicality of just "making a Joker movie." It does not work like that, especially with comic books. These movies are planned way in advance with plot and premise. Even IF they somehow made the entire story, plot, and everything else, they still would have to adapt it to an entire comic book world, which would make it made specifically a Joker based movie anyways. And also, make the deal to secure the rights to the character with an entirely already made story? A rough draft/premise sure, but to make an entire movie for no reason? Or even make a movie for a different producer then change your mind and pitch it as a DC character movie? This is about Joker 1 btw, although I guess it has relation to the 2nd.
However the 2nd movie ended, conveyed the theme which is an artistic choice. He was still Joker as an icon or only in name, but it is still set in the Batman universe in Gotham City.
I'm absolutely loving it. Its a f you to the fan boys that the directed already said pulled the wrong things from the first movie. If ya think about it just like how the joker film had a retcon in his mind ending , ya know maybe we could be long term trolled and the idea is to bring back Pheonix in like 10 years. How can you out do the dark knight joker? You have to make this insane build up, i think this movie will be adored long term, everyone is bitching now but watch this becomes a huge hit with the new generation and filmmaking fans.

And just the idea of turning a movie loosely based on comic book characters into a musical completely disconnected from the cinematic universes and canon is so bonkers that I cannot avoid feeling some symphaty for the director. I mean, he could have written just a run-of-the-mill lazy sequel full of fanservice, instead he decided to go with such a crazy idea doomed to piss off easily triggered fanboys. A fascinating disaster.
