Wayne is punctual and brief in his style, fitting notes in wherever he "feels" them. He isn't all about long Coltranian passages. The man can play, and he has earned the right to play whatever he wants. A true classy legend.
@@skineyemin4276 The young Wayne Shorter played a lot like Coltrane on the tenor though. He sometimes did it with Weather Report as well. But I prefer Wayne's take on that tradition, and his compositional style of playing.
@@herrbonk3635 I think Wayne, like most young jazz tenor players his age during the 1950s, all wanted to or sounded somewhat like Trane. That couldn't be helped since the 3rd great jazz revolution was already taking place and I don't think Wayne sounded much like Trane when he was playing with Miles. To me, Louis Armstrong lead the first jazz revolution, Bird, Diz and other notable greats lead the 2nd.
Am I literally the only person here who believes what he did was justified by the explanation he gave? It's the concept more than what you're hearing. The idea behind it is what makes that one note beautiful.
H.J.W Yeah, it has an organic nature to it and is more to do with the interpretation of the note rather than the straight forward concievement of it. Although I find it interesting that he only played one note in Milky Way (Weather Report). Correlation between one note and space?
No you are not the only one bro, but in a culture that makes a 19 year old Kardashian/Jenner a billionaire (for........?) you can not expect many to come close to getting it.
The photon is a beam that starts at the base of the sun (Wayne is the center of the sun), the note is represnting the photon. Wayne holds the tone and pushes more air out of the saxophone which is representative of the photon traveling leaving the center and reaching the surface of the sun. The final push of air is from the surface to earth. He repeats and says that it's been happening for millions of years, but that the short term goal is a beam traveling, a linear beam which is why he plays one note to represent a linear beam. This video was awesome until the end. This shit doesn't even have to do with "jazz" it's art and symbolic representation. It is sound, not jazz just because there is a saxophone. It baffles me that this is "intellectual TV"
Tell me about it!!! Behold the untrained ear of music. Obviously he has no idea who he's talking about! If I was on that panel, I would encourage him to listen to Speak No Evil, Juju and maybe the All Seeing Eye and then let him report back. Then again, he'll still have no clue.. .
some of the detractors have said 'he's trolling', but really i think he's trolling on a deeper level than that even. he said in effect ' the photon is beyond & encompassing all of our short term human endeavors we believe are important & it is static and in place for millions of years." so he played a static note that stayed in one place with no ulterior goal and then got the response that HAHA "that note is boring (i.e doesn't help your short term endeavors)". So they proved the point for him lol
"The photon fears nothing" . He is right. Our minds usually go in all directions trying to explain what they can't wrap themselves around, trying to find "meaning". The photon instead, "is" meaning.
This is the parallel to life as we know it. Wayne, has nothing to prove and within this life, we spend so much time chasing something that is so powerful, real, engaging, and dynamic. Truth is, is that it has always been there with us and it's the most single incredible reality which is existing. It's really that simple. The expression, the thought, the extension is many things including oxygen, free thinking, and Love for starters. We can go on and on with the greatest words, diagrams, stories, and physical symbolic images, though only one thing remains. Now! Now! is a singular note in fact, a simple one. Now! is the Magnetic Universe. We are simply a grain of salt within this Dynamic System as Human Beings. We are not the beginning nor the end, we're just Now! like that beautiful note. Now! is a gift whether we see, hear (here), or feel it. The Photon was here before us and will be after with no regard for our single note or immaculate strand of notes. Thank you Wayne for making this Human Experience for me personally more beautiful in ways beyond comprehension. Same goes to you Herbie and Neil. I feel the Photon and we're not equipped to express what that is any better than what's already been done. Thank you
He’s actually right physically speaking that photon gets emitted at one frequency right? It’s not just changing frequencies randomly unless it encounters other particles
Wayne is absolutely right. He took your "short term goals and stuff like that..." and played just The Song asked. "... this photon is wrapping around that whole thing for millions and millions of years. And something else is wrapping around there, and that's us" Boom, in your mechanicist face. Be grateful he did not say " your silly short term goals". Thank you, MAESTRO 🙏
LOL! Yeah I thought he would've played like a very busy and condensed part (photon getting created and trying to escape the sun over 100k years) and then fly up to the top of register (hitting Earth in 8 minutes)!
thatnewlady follow me on tumblr Wayne Shorter literally lives on the fly. His long standing quartet has never had a rehearsal ever. This band plays existing material in vastly different ways and they compose new material in real time on stage. They don't have a road map .... they don't know who will play what on what song or the order that the songs happen. With all of that said, Wayne's one note response here was not a sign of him being devoid of what to play. But that one note expressed exactly what he imagined the scenario to be
"Oh oh... this is gonna be deep.." lol I dont know what the connection to "short term goals" is to a astrophysical photon, but if Wayne Shorter says there is, Im ok with it lol

acemachine26 i mean he was disrespectful but your comment is just as disrespectful towards hip hop which in itself is pretty much jazz when you think about it
Wayne Shorter is one of my heroes and I've written so much music inspired from him his work, and honestly I think he was trying to fuck with Neil. From people I know who've played with him, they all say he can be a goon sometimes. I think it hilarious !
just cause wayne shorter thinks differently from the way culture reacts to specific musical tropes that are conventional enough to be understood shouldn't make his genuine answer laughable. this token black comedian who repeats obvious things with a louder voice is not even a speck on wayne shorter's fantastic mind. also, wouldn't expect anything less than tyson's cloying, ingratiating reaction to a cultural-precedent-loving hack comedian's perception of wayne shorter's lateral genius.
Hey what is shown more respect and not laugh away knowing full well he was sitting right in front of him - Wayne Shorter. He definitely thought about the question and responded accordingly, end of story.
I'm a huge jazz head, mathematics undergraduate w/ coursework in quantum physics... I couldn't follow a word of what Wayne was saying or interpreting musically; was seeking a cue from Herbie's expression and got nothing.
I think Wayne was trying to convey the immensity of time on an astrophysical scale, relative to our perception of time and our expectations. We tend to want dynamics and entertainment on our terms, but that's not really what you get on the journey of a photon over hundreds of thousands of years. He could have tried to condense the whole journey down into a single phrase, which was the expectation, but he saw it as a much more expansive thing.
Chuck Nice is a goofball trying to be funny (and falling short) and will soon be forgotten. Wayne Shorter's music, however, will be here for eternity. And for you Chuck: Wayne wasn't playing Jazz; he was doing an impression of a photon traveling from the sun to the earth. Get a grip, dude!

Why? Do we have frequently the chance to see a genius giving us a hint of their thinking or their creative process in real time? I think our societies are accustomed to junk food, this is why this video looks ridiculous to most people. We should accept not understanding how geniuses think or see the world.
