Its basically designed like an old Stravinsky/Korsakov trick. Rhythm section plays in the Half-whole dim scale, while a whole tone scale based on one of the gaps in the dim scale plays the lead. For example, our Ostinato goes: E,F & D, the whole tone scale in the lead starts on D#, right on the gap. Try improvising with D# whole tone over a Dim scale rhythm to invoke that sound!
Thank you so much for this, I am doing an arrangement (completely different style) of this, and seeing this really helps me get a grasp of it. I'll make sure to credit you when I put it out.
If you hear a 4/4 string ostinato like that--every sailor knows that one in D Minor means death--you know what's coming.
Total genius!!! Absolute masterpiece!
Shouldn't the string chords at ms 23 be:
Eb7/E and E7/F
?
Thx for analysing.. Keep it up!
