You are 100% right. You can't ever get in touch with anyone you need to talk to at the big box. Its like playing phone tag for an hour.

When you say that you hope some of the videos are helpful, YOU ARE WRONG!
ALL OF YOUR VIDEOS ARE HELPFUL! Even watching your videos more than once I learn things I missed in the prior viewings. You not only teach specific lessons but also teach a mindset or rhythm to building in general. So don’t worry about being repetitive because building is repetitive!
Thank you! You deserve what you get from RUclips. You are only harvesting what you have planted and you have worked extremely hard to share you knowledge and experience with us.

Ken, you thanked us the subscriber(s). Now, let me thank you sir. Many of us are small business owners or sole proprietors. I enjoy your calm demeanor and patient but efficient work ethic. You're a direct representation of what we are in the small business trades. A work truck, a trailer (tool box), & a man or two chasing leads and working hard & honest and heading back home every day to enjoy our families.
Please let it be no surprise why we all subscribe and view your channel. Watching your content encourages me to keep at it during these times of uncertainty and fluctuation that affect us all directly. I enjoy your attitude and your keep-at-it ethic.
Thank YOU for producing informative and encouraging content!

Pretty simple to understand why your channel is so popular - you are simply a decent and likable man who instantly connects with your viewers. Over the 2022 Christmas holidays I have viewed many of your show and read every comment written in those videos. You do a great job with the videos and the work, you have a great crew, a wonderful daughter who is definitely a 'chip of the old block', so to speak. She has a great sense of humor and a real presence whenever she appears. She can be a star in her own right. Btw, I saw you make a reference or funny gesture in one of your videos where you pretended to paint a landscape and give some light commentary. Obviously in reference to the great Bob Ross. You are the Bob Ross of carpentry shows. Thanks a million

This assessment is coming from the viewer's angle, which is important because this is what we see and hear. And, yes, your videos are surely helpful and this one, for instance, it's like having a conversation with you. And of course, you build the best garages! Congratulations and we will watch as your channel continues to grow!

It's been many years since I've seen lumber that is perfectly straight and not warped in a lumber yard. That's why I get mad when I see an older house demolished where they make no effort to save any of the old, perfectly straight lumber. They just smash it to pieces, load the mess into a dumpster truck, and haul it away to the land fill. What a waste of good wood!

Congratulations on your 101K subscribers Ken. I just found you today and subscribed because of the honest and informative video you did exposing the "sea of stockpiled lumber" in your area. I think you are right in saying that it is not all about greed (which I'm sure some of it is), but is complicated by the logistics of getting the product to market. I saw on the news last night that there is a 35% decline in the number of truck drivers in our country. Thanks for your great reporting. I look forward to following you regularly.

  • @pauljackson5482

It's the same here in England. We have a shortage of lorry drivers, our fuel is around £6 a gallon, plus covid restrictions stop a lot of quantity being moved.
I could not find a bag of cement or sand last week at 2 large suppliers. That made the prices go up at the only guy in town who had some left!
Keep your videos coming. They are informative, educational. And relaxing.

Very often I check prices at both places .. which involves a lot of foot work for the big box .. like you said they're hard to get on the phone. Also some things you get get better deals on at the box .. but as quality lumber goes I like to do all my business with the mom and pops. They're our neighbors and families. And they're the backbone of America ! Cheers Ken !

Trucking/logistics is a real issue right now...it’s affecting a lot of industries (lumber, steel, polymer/plastics, etc). The manufacturer or mill can ramp back up or turn out as much as they want (if they can get the labor to do the work, which is another issue entirely)...but getting goods to market has been a serious thorn in the side for many these days.
As always, great video! Another lifetime ago, I spent years working at a local mom ‘n pop lumber & building center...lots of great relationships made there and experience gained...no possible comparison to the big box chains...a completely different niche.

The big box stores have their place and are handy but when it comes to lumber, I have spent hours looking through the piles to find good pieces. Where as in the lumber yard it was only minutes and I found that the lumber yard in my area had prices that matched or were lower then the big box store. The big plus to the local lumber yard is the staff are helpful and always available. The few times their lumber prices were higher was so little it was worth it for the joy of being helped by friendly and knowledge staff

I’m a garage door installer in Massachusetts and we’re seeing shortages and very long lead times on doors and now springs. I just figured I would mention this so you can look into getting doors now just in case there is a real lack of supply. 4 week lead time doors are now 8-12 and some products we just can’t get.

The nice thing about the big box stores is that you can pick and choose the lumber you want.....good for a small project. They usually have a bigger and wider selection of IN STORE products. Here in Canada, we have a country wide chain called Home Hardware that is made up of franchises which work a lot like small mom and pop places. The one here in Fergus, and most of the other ones nearby are great to work with. Much more knowledgeable and great to work with if you have questions or want to do special orders. They are also more likely to work out special pricing. Love your videos and comments!

I have worked n 2 family owned lumber yards over the last 30 years. The way i have always done business is that i view my customers as friends and fellow employees. They are doing there part to sell my product just as much as i am. we work as a team to provide the homeowner with a good experience. I often recommend my contractors for different projects depending on their "specialties". i have built many friendships over the years by keeping their best interest at heart as well as my employers. Stick in that happy medium and we all benefit!

I started using steel products to replace wood where i can. It’s cheaper, lighter and you can get bulk-buy discounts on it. Not ideal, but sometimes works out better for boxing things in, strapping ceilings, running steel tracks for top and bottom plates for walls (non load bearing), etc.

I/we had a great partnership with a local supplier, 50+ years in business....made it hard to compete with Lowe's.... big difference in service.... mom and pop would throw out bad lumber before sending to job site..... Lowe (big box) would send you what ever was in the rack at the time....in their defense, you could sort and return to the store.... good channel Ken
