Reminds me of a time when I was dating my girlfriend and took her and her 3 year old son in the Matra Murena to a pancake restaurant on top of a hill near Nijmegen (Duivelsberg). When we wanted to go home, the starter motor of the Murena refused to do its work and getting to it isn't easy in a mid-engined car. Then I realised we were parked on top of a hill. Pulled the choke, selected second gear, released handbrake, depressed clutch, she gave the car a push and after it picked up some speed downhill, released clutch and it started! Made an everlasting impression to her because I've kept my cool. Three years later we've used the Murena as a wedding car. Sold the car because it had become one seat short, we got her son a little sister. ❤

@@Paradox0182 there are quite a few hills between Nijmegen and Berg en Dal (lit. "Mountain and Valley"), especially if you take the Zevenheuvelenweg (lit. "Seven Hills Road") which is like a rollercoaster if you take the speed limits less seriously in a lightweight mid-engined car. 😅 But indeed the rest of the country is as flat as the pancakes they were serving in that restaurant!

Reminds me of trying to describe to my wife how to bump start my Honda 50 Cub. She made similar faces. For the curious you select 2nd gear whilst on the center stand and while seated, briskly rock the bike off the stand while holding the gear pedal down and release it up as soon as the center stand clunks into the up position. Always worked for me.

I had a friend in Melbourne, 19 years old, probably an inch or two taller than Carly, just passed her test, who drove a yellow 1972 Mustang. The enormous one.
It belonged to one of her brothers who IIRC was serving a driving ban. She wasn't at all into cars, but it certainly gained her a lot of male attention.
She eventually bought a 1980's Corolla as her first car.
Before watching the video I was betting the Smart couldn't be bumped.
    Shows how much I know.

Swap those little hoses in the engine bay for silicone. Known to fail and then you end up in (very slow) limp mode. Bet you rarely see a petrol station. It beats the classic Beetle in my view and I've lived with loads of those. Smarts have heaters! Also removing polystyrene lump in front of battery on passenger side and there will be more leg room. Miss mine. SO much fun to drive.

Theres no finer thing than finding a way to start a car without a working starter motor. Gutted she didnt start on the key after turning her off but hey-ho that's the way it goes sometimes. Also i didnt know you could start a smart by bump starting. cool. Carly makes me chuckle with her 'its designed to be come out in a beautiful unit' hmmm yep 18 years of corrosion will be a git on the fixings but I know you both have the will and will find a way. my mate had one of these 20 years ago, he bought it brand new. He did about 70k and the thing was an oil burner, by that point. He said to do stuff to it, the rear subframe had to be dropped down, but the four bolts are very long. I don't think these have a sump plug from what i remember him telling me. He had pump the oil out of it from the dip stick. Very basic cars and i have to say these are the modern mini really. He had no bother with his at all, and loved it.

A useful technique I have found for when driving an automatic and you are not used to it, is to fold your left leg under your right, as if you were beginning to sit cross-legged. I'm 6'4" and there's always been room to do it in every one I've driven so far. Prevents those involuntary stabs on the brake pedal as you arrive at junctions.

I understand there is a service tool comprising four longer subframe bolts. You swap these in and they allow you to jack the rear of the car up while the subframe remains on the ground. Apparently there is enough slack in the wiring, brake lines etc so they don't need to be disconnected. You then have enough space to work on the engine.

Yeah, wintertime bump starts. I think two years ago I volunteered at a castle in a somewhat colder part of the world. It was Friday and a work crew from out of the area wanted to go home for the weekend but their van wouldn't start in the sub-zero weather. We briefly considered getting jump leads and another car but quickly decided we were enough people to easily turn her around manually and send her down a little hill. The younger of the two workers panicked as he had no idea how to bump a car and even offered to let one of us try but the older one said "no problem", got in, second with clutch down, we gave her a push and off she went. I think there was enough juice left in the battery to run the glow plugs so the big diesel started quite happily even on a fairly small hill.

Proper job! Had my doubts that rolling down a hill would work as normally an auto needs to reach 25-30 before the engine starts to turn. I always had to use the handle with my Riley's as had centrifugal clutches, was well up a creek sans paddle one morning when some burke had parked 3" from my bumper, the car facing downhill so couldn't push it back. Suppose I shouldn't have parked overnight with the side lights on but was a badly lit road and the street lights went off at midnight then. The car was black so not easily seen.

It's not as difficult as it sounds but looks scary if you aren't mechanically minded.
The rear of the subframe has to be lowered and the whole subframe/engine tilts down at the back on the front mounting which pivots.
As you take one rear mounting bolt out you are supposed to replace it with a longer"service" bolt and then do the other which allows the subframe to drop but it can be done without the long bolts just make sure you don't drop it too far by leaving on the wheels or use stands.
Nothing on the engine has to be disconnected. It just needs to come down app 4 inches which then allows you access for the starter and alternator.
It's not a regular thing so if done properly will possibly never need to be done again.
I would recommend paying the subscription to Evolution and you will get actual experienced articles on all thing Smart.

I have trouble with that corner of the roof on my smart as well, but If i open the boot and pull it really 'smartly'🤪 down it locks.
    Hope this works for you.

You need to get Motley Crue to re-record “Kickstart my Heart” as “Bumpstart my Smart”……😊

"The throttle response will be slightly different to a Daihatsu" - I can safely say you are the only person in the world towing a smart with a falcon!

Flashback to a time my Mini's alternator died, and there I was on a dead flat road, in the dark. I tightened the fan belt... alternator fixed... and push started it on my own. Luckily, it was, of course, nice and warm, so it started easily. I guess as this was the first time starting the Smart, you had all the chips stacked against you, and thus a good hill was a wise move.

I think it should be recognised that Miss Hubnut went above and beyond. I think if I asked my partner to take part in such a caper, I would have a good idea what the answer would be!

Looking forward to smart adventures I think you have to keep her atleast for the driving season and see how you get along. It definately fits in with the fleet!

I had an early one for a number of years. Mine had the "almond" shape headlamps which were later changed to the "peanut" shape. One thing annoyed me was the early ones were 121 g on the emissions so were just one gram over the cheap tax when that came in. Had to pay £121 against the £35.
You will find it a handy little car for nipping around and I suspect if you keep it you will find it will be the go to car for everyone.

How about 6D Diesels' Trabant once he gets it sturdy enough to drive on the road?
