    Then again, it could be because Brits recognise that it tastes exactly like the smell of Germolene antiseptic oitment, and Americans have never smelled (or tasted) Germolene!

    Where I lived in the 1980-1990's there was a market stall that used to sell a non-carbonated sarsaparilla beer that they used to brew in large mettle kegs which is probably as closest UK version to a Root Beer that I've tried. It also had a strong earthy and black licorice flavour.

    American here, great video! I did a little bit of googling myself because I haven't seen an A&W restaurant in many years and it turns out their numbers are way down (there's not even a location here in Georgia, where I live). At the same time, they're EXPANDING in Canada. I don't blame them for chasing the business where the business is, but I sure do hate knowing I'll probably never go in an A&W restaurant again and get a root beer fresh from the tap instead of one in a can or plastic bottle. :(

    On my first trip to the States I tried root beer and I can concur it tastes disgusting! The primary flavour is oil of wintergreen (chemically methyl salicylate). In the UK and probably most of Europe it is associated with medicated items and ointments. At the time I described the taste of root beer as like sucking bandages!

    • @brockreynolds870

      @@brockreynolds870 You don't say where "here" is but wikipedia mentions wintergreen as an ingredient en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Root_beer and it was definitely the flavour I remember. Recipes might have changed since the 1980s but I'm willing to bet I would still find the taste revolting. It is the marmite of the Americas.

    • @jeffreywrightphotography
      @jeffreywrightphotography Год назад +1

      It might be an ingredient in some of the recipes but it isn't the primary flavour. The primary flavor is that of the bark or root that's used. The drink was often called sasparilla in the past rather than root beer because of this. Wintergreen is a pretty common flavor in a lot of breath mints, candies, gum, and toothpaste in the US and isn't even close to the primary flavor of root beer. My guess is the wintergreen is added to give some root beer varieties their "bite". Barques Root Beer even uses that term in its advertising ("Barques Has Bite!"). It also tastes very different from most other Root Beer brands, perhaps because it has a higher amount of wintergreen in it.

    • @luke_cohen1
      @luke_cohen1 5 дней назад +1

      @@jeffreywrightphotography Yeah, I would have to agree. America does have some drink with minor mint (ie wintergreen, spearmint, peppermint, etc) flavoring but an explicitly minty soda isn’t really a thing at the mainstream level. That said, North Americans are prone to turn the flavor dial up to 11 with every food and beverage item which other countries normally don’t do so I’m not surprised that foreigners are very sensitive to any flavoring we put forward in such items.

    It gets it flavor from the sassafras tree. Sassafras trees are interesting in that it has four different shaped leaves. A normal "leaf" shape, a mitten shape with the "thumb" or the right or left, and a leaf shaped like the mitten except it has thumbs on both sides. If you are walking in the woods and scrape the skin off twigs you will get a very nice scent. You can make your own root beer by buying the extract and mixing it according to directions. As it ages it firms it's carbonization. If the caps were not applied properly, they would pop off and root beer would fly all over. What a mess. But when the root beer is finished it was so good!

    So, not sure if this might be a northerner thing, but I grew up drinking Dandelion and Burdock as well as Sarsaparilla. I kinda love Root Beer because of that. My understanding though is that both D&B and Sarsaparilla were favoured replacements for alcoholic beverages by the temperance movement, especially quakers. They tended to have a larger influence in the north of England with the home base being in Kendal. Titus Salt, a Quaker industrialist and philanthropist from Bradford built the town of Saltair for his workforce and, although there were pubs, there was no alcohol. Titus’ favoured replacement was Sarsaparilla. So I think the influence may have stuck around more in the north.

    There was a time when each store made their own. We made ours in bulk using warm water, lots of sugar, and pre-made root beer syrup. After mixing, it was poured into individual tanks. The tanks were hooked up to a hose as needed, and always had a CO2 tank joined to it as well.
    Today the drink comes pre-mixed, already carbonated, in tanks.

    To me, it is funny that you didn't always think Root Beer had a licorice flavour. For me, that anise flavour has always been the most prominant tasting note followed by sugar and vanilla. Never would have guessed mint though, either!

      If you've ever had sassafras bark, that's the most prominent flavor. It straight up tastes like root beer. It's also an ingredient in the manufacture of MDMA. Some friends tried to make some once, but weren't advanced enough to fully synthesize it, so I got a dropper under the tongue, which tasted just like root beer, but unlike Molly, had a peak of about 10 minutes.

    After you drank the can of root beer, you could have put a piece of sandpaper on a flat surface and carefully sanded the top edge to remove the top of the can. You could have used it to drink from or as a storage pot, plant pot or vase and had a momento of your favourite root beer.

    Hearing you say you really like having the sweet & salt tastes in your food makes me immediately think of MacDondald's etc, where they quite heavily salt the French fries, to make sure you drink lots of Coke etc to compensate. Or at least they did during the couple of years when our kids would want to go there - luckily they grew out of it.

    Root beer is nice as a float, but I haven't had it in ages. Even in my teens (my big soda drinking days) I would usually opt for a caffeinated brown drink.

    Sarsaparilla was a common enough drink in the UK when the temperence movement was common - there were many temperence bars serving it - I seem to remember the closure of the last one in the UK was within the past few years and made national news.
    Dandelion and burdock, that I have tasted, tasted just like a cola drink.
    A good deal of the flavour of liquorice sweets/toffees/candies, is actually aniseed. If you chew dried liquorice root, from the actual plant, it tastes nothing much like the flavoured sweets.

    Very interesting, almost as good as the black currant vid. I appreciated the comparison to dandelion & burdock, which I do like. Surely the very sweet taste, typically North American, is a large part of the British distaste? Add in liquorice and mint and you do seem to get a rather medicinal drink. However, you mention an earthy, vanilla, flavour - both of which I usually like, so I might give this a try, if I ever see it at my supermarket. Do Lidl root do beer? What do other Europeans think of it? It is obviously a native American concoction, but so are Coke and Pepsi, which have done reasonably well in Europe. Is root beer even sweeter than them?

    A ‘still’ version of root beer was once sold in Britain. I remember drinking it during the mid 1950’s. However, the current recipe bears no relationship to the original. My mother used to make real Dandelion and Burdock, and that stuff put hairs on your chest! Probably removing them too, if applied externally! 😂

    There is one type of root beer that is popular in the UK (or at least in the North and Midlands) - "Dandelion and Burdock" is made from the roots of the Dandelion and Burdock plants and its traditional preparation was much the same as root beer in North America. It doesn't taste exactly the same as North American root beer - but it's similar. Made since at least the middle ages, it was very popular in temperance pubs and hotels in the late Victorian and Edwardian period. Many of the modern brands do not actually have any Dandelion or Burdock in them, relying on artificial flavourings to reproduce the taste (just like many root beers in North America do) - although Fentimans do still have extracts of both Dandelion and Burdock in theirs. Traditional "home brewed" Dandelion and Burdock is a bit tricky to make, it can go "off" very quickly.

    Only issue I encountered when I was on holiday in Ireland the bartender had never heard of it but they were happy to give me a pint glass half of lemonade and a bottle of lager to mix.
