Throughout the movie, Henry is obviously feeling like he's losing control of his life and himself as the baby takes over. It just now struck me that this scene follows that pattern. Mary's grandma--now a great-grandma!--is reduced to a literal puppet. This is the end Harry sees fit himself in this dream/mushroom trip.
The way I interpreted this, is that the mother is actually the older women. She goes back there to be herself, as In she smokes, and tosses salad. When she comes out, she is not being herself
My least favorite scene, the woman is treated like an old worn out kitchen appliance, kept around for nostalgia sake. It reminds me of the old wringer washing machine on the back porch of my grandmother's house years ago. They don't even set a place for her at the table At least that's my interpretation, maybe there's a "happier" interpretation, but I have never been able to see it.
This movie could have been better. There were a few interesting/creepy scenes like this but the rest just dragged on. I tried to watch it twice but it's just not for me. I usually like strange movies like this.
Always found it amusing how she put the cigarette in her mouth and lit it, while she stayed catatonic the whole time.
