- John Lewis has turned to a cheeky carnivorous plant - and an operatic superstar - for its Christmas advertising campaign. After last year’s low-key charity-linked clip featuring a skateboarding foster dad, the department store chain has returned to its tried and tested formula of a heartwarming story featuring a child and an unusual friend - with a twist from some catchy Italian rock opera sung by the tenor Andrea Bocelli. The John Lewis Christmas ad, the 2023 version of which will be screened from Thursday, has over the last decade become a national moment, marking the beginning of the festive shopping binge.

My favourite is one of the earlier ones with the little boy who can't contain his excitement for Christmas day, but turns out in the end he was more excited about giving his parents a gift than receiving one. 😢

It's almost as if they are embarrassed to promote a traditional Christmas. Here we have an advert that is using the family wanting to have a traditional tree as a form of oppression against the young lad who wants his 'different' tree... another in a long line of boring adverts that are forcing down our throats that being different is great and acceptable. The thing they don't understand is that we get it, we all get it. Being different and tolerant is what makes us great. But please can someone do something traditional without trying so hard to be profound.

Really love this advert! Something different to break with usual tradition of cosy christmas adverts which are normally about perfect christmas settings! Shows that not every family is like that! So much love this advert!

I have a Venus fly plant. Its really beautiful. The advert is beautiful and different to their others. But you can fall in love with a plant. The plant will grow with the child and also make it their responsibility to look after it. It's educational

Little Christmas Shop of Horrors: the cinematic ending
The penguin one will always be the best...
When I saw the penguin one I was so impressed with their penguin behaviour. At the time I volunteered with Edinburgh Zoo. Next time I was in I mentioned the ad and was told that the CGI guys had been in during May watching the penguins very carefully. My favourite part was the penguin helping with the lego, mirroring Gentoo penguins using stones as a gift when building nest.

Um, bizarre. It doesn't have the usual soft edge of the John Lewis ads. But I like it. Especially when it smiles. 😊
