  • Juneteenth has taken on a symbolic national reverence as the day news of the Emancipation Proclamation finally reached Texas, but, in reality, the emancipation proclamation didn’t end slavery, and neither did the civil war. Reporter Nicole Ellis revisits Galveston, Texas, where General Gordon Granger delivered an order that emancipated 250,000 enslaved people in Texas. Granger clarifying words on the value of black life in America distinguishes Juneteenth as emancipation day. But our ability to live up to that ideal as a nation is best measured in, the days, weeks, and years that followed.

      Black lives matter to me.
Even if you're in the dark ages and believe that black people are only valuable if you can buy them and sell them to make money. Did you know that back in the early 1900s some people didn't treat the Irish and Italian immigrants were any better than Blacks.
My ancestors were born Yankee's and Quakers, who helped run the underground railroad to save the lives of thousands of black people from the Confederate Tarrants of the south. They helped them move up into Canada where the Blacks started their own business, schools, Banks, farms and Government. Most of those decedents are still there, around Quebec, doing great.
You should be ashamed of yourself for thinking that Black people are less than white. We are all gods children. We all deserve equal rights, protection and respect.

And so it makes it that much easier to shoot each other over silly things, and abuse our bodies. We seek love and power the wrong way. I can't imagine what it does for your self esteem to be sold and not treated like a human. So heartbreaking. I can't imagine what these poor souls felt. The fact that this is even history is just mind blowing. I wonder if slave owners even felt a touch of humanity when they looked in these people's eyes.

Why don't you go back in time and ask them? Or ask this guy.
This same type of letter may have been sent a thousand times from a slaveholding father to his slaveholding son in mid nineteenth century American South. But William Ellison and his son, Henry Ellison, were different. William Ellison was African American, born into slavery in April of 1790 with the name April Ellison to a slave mother and white slavemaster father, Mr. William Ellison. As a young man he was apprenticed to a cotton gin maker rather than working in the fields and allowed to keep a portion of the wages he earned for his master and father, money that he later used to purchase his freedom. At the same time, he changed his name to William Ellison, after his father, to fit in with higher society. After purchasing his family, he moved to Sumter County, South Carolina and hired out other free African Americans to work in his cotton gin shop. While working, he discovered a common problem among freed slaves in the South. The expense of wages left him with a profit that would never compete with what slaveowners were earning. Wanting to move up in society, he purchased his first slaves in 1820.

Agreed. But you do realize the slavery still exist in Africa and the middle east today? The dehumanization of people is not limited to slavery. The 8 million Jews in WWII executed due to their religion. The 1.5 million Armenian's in Turkey. 4 Million Chinese executed by the Japanese during WW2 for being Chinese. My point is human history is replete with other humans dehumanizing other humans. This is the reason why liberty and justice are so important. Only through the idea and practice that all people are created equal and due justice can we stop future dehumanization and atrocities.

Okay people at no point did I point out that it currently isn't happening in other places or did I point out a skin color. I made a generalized statement of how it was heartbreaking...Why does everyone feel the need to disassociate the current topic with "but did you know"? Stop trying to devalue what has and is going on in our country.
And yes I think the rich, elite, political and powerful people in this country are gross and FAR TOO POWERFUL as a side note.

During that time, everyone was using slaves. Even people of the same skin color.
      The Japanese had slaves
      The Brits had slaves
Tribes in Africa had slaves (even today)
      Russia had slaves
      Germany had slaves
All of Europe and Asia had slaves.
America had the first progressive idea of freedom. It took 100 years for America to ban slavery after its founding. (btw its the fastest country to ban slavery) 🤟🏼
So.... putting that into perspective; YES, slavery is evil. NO, They DID have the concept of freedom. Jefferson wanted add a 40 word addition to the deceleration of independence, condemning slavery. But it went off topic. (It was a message to the brits basically) So it was excluded.
It was the founding fathers which sparked the idea of freedom for everyone. Abraham Lincoln himself quoted the constitution and declaration of independence. Same with MLK.
Get off your high horse. Being ignorant and condemning the people that helped remove slavery, is f**king disgusting. They had the right idea before anyone else did during that time.

One thing that is important to consider is not so much June,19th 1865, but rather the day that the 13th Amendment was adopted, which was 12/18/1865. That was the day that slavery was supposedly completely abolished in the United States-for all slaves. The proclamation by Lincoln was only meant to free slaves in the Confederacy, not in the border states such as Maryland or Kentucky. Of course, slavery was never really abolished in this country. We are still dealing with the consequences of slavery to this day, obviously..

Also, Stephen Miller, his right-wing, racist, and anti-immigrant advisor, scheduled the Tulsa rally to combine the WORST experience in black history (the Tulsa white riot and massacre in Greenville in 1921) with the BEST day in black history (Juneteenth).
