- [Rather Simple] How to fold an inflatable diamond from a square of paper using real origami locks instead of glue.

I set out to design this model because I noticed that all other origami diamonds on the internet use glue.... even the diamond by origami master Satoshi Kamiya. I realize a lot of modern origami (insects and other stunning designs) require using sizing (which is a euphemism for glue) but in my origami explorations I still stick to the no-glue aesthetic.
In addition to being glue-free, the diamond in this tutorial is rather easy to fold, is inflatable and collapsible, it can spin on a table, balance on its edges, transform into a chomping mouth, and it can also be used as a badminton or handminton birdie! Just hold it near the top point and spin it between your thumb and middle fingers like an ordinary spinning top. I really have to say something about "It's not origami if you use glue" mantra. From complex to simple, I often use glue, especially for complex models with a lot of layers. Technically I don't need to use glue but the look is enhanced with it. It's interesting that using tisssue foil is not considered "cheating". As far as structural properties are concerned, tissue foil is a lot more like foil than paper. Tissue foil is used because it's like reinforcing the model with both glue and a wire skeleton. Tissue foil is expensive or you have to make it yourself. There's nothing wrong with wanting the novelty of a model made with one piece of paper and nothing more but it's crazy to be over the top dogmatic about it.
"I still stick to the no-glue aesthetic" is an expression of MY personal tastes; it does not judge you for yours. I like the challenge of using origami locks to hold the paper together, and by definition of origami as paper folding, it is more purely origami than when glue is used. In the case of this diamond shape, there were a lot of other tutorials that used a bird base and simply glued the 4 corners together. The "It's not origami if you use glue" comments you've seen is the frustrated response by people feeling mislead by the thumbnails which in several cases looked completely different than the diamonds they actually taught. That's what inspired me to try to design this model.
I have to thank you for inspiring me to return to origami with your heart shaped box around valentines day this year. I ultimately used a bit of glue on that model. I only knew a flapping crane at the time. I also purchased the book you suggested. I've memorized the Kangaroo with Joey (in the book), grasshopper, jack in the box and many dragons, including the three headed one. I am at a high intermediate skill level. It's amazing what you can accomplish with a little bit of practice and determination and inspiration.
