ARTIST ARE DOING TWITTER WRONG! Maybe!

  • Thanks for watching!
    I'm sure this kind of video is really different from my regular content, but it is something I put a lot of effort in and I feel like with RJ Palmers large following this might influence some people to make wrong decisions in their pursuit for their art on twitter. I have nothing against RJ Palmer, so I really hope no one sees this as a call out video, its just testing the advice he gave people, and this kind of advice is very relevant and sought after by smaller artists online.
    I'm sure somewhere in here I ended up making a few mistakes, and there are other things to take into consideration about how a post did well or not. For instance, the negative pieces ended up being posted around the time of Inktober and all of the derivatives beginning. However after the initial explosion of Inktober/derivatives the results were all particularly negative. There are also most superficial things like day of the week and time of day.
    I also want to mention, since i didn't in the video, the beginning of the year, I only had around 180 followers. So anything posted in January had a very miniscule following, and as the year progresses that following got bigger. My following wasn't always 400+ (which isn't even that large in terms of the overall), but it has since grown since a lot of these pieces were posted, and some of them performed worse.
    One thing I didn't mention in the video was also tagging efficently. A lot of people add #wip #digitalart and other more "fillery" tags into their work. These typically don't get you much, since they are such broad search terms and it is way better to be more specific about your tags then just adding whatever you feel like. Also not going tag crazy and adding like 20 tags to one piece of art.
    And the last thing, I didn't add what I wrote was OG captions, mostly since I felt like it wasn't nessecary. In most of the reposts I tried to include at least the fandom name, so FFXIV, Guilty Gear, etc... and the one post that did the best didn't even have FFXIV in the title.

    it's crazy how artists have to struggle on twitter. Your art is good and eye catching, and it gets less than 100 likes consistently? Disheartening

      Thank you!
      The thing with twitter - and I suppose most social media's like that is theres a bunch of caveats. The first being art that does well on the algorithm isn't always the most amazing art. It just does a good job of being eye catching. And secondly is the amount of engagement you feed into the algorithm might not always be consistent. You can supplement with text posts/polls and other forms of engagement or retweeting your own work, but its really learning to understand how it works to benefit you later.
      This whole twitter system has very little to do with your art quality than it does more about learning what to do to take advantage of it which is something a lot of creatives also struggle with or have a lot of internal conflict with.

      Keep your chin up!
      Getting started is definitely the hardest part but once you get rolling itll feel a lot easier.
      Remember to try and be actice, so retweet your own stuff, do text posts, post your art etc.
      Dont forget to network as well, even just commenting on people of similar skill level or even subject matter over time youll develop relationships and connections if you keep engaging with others they might start engaging with you. Its very transactional but you might make some great art friends getting out of your own bubble.
      Being active is definitely the most important, and find your good times to post. For example the 2 weeks worth of posting I did for this video, I found the days where I had my highest amounts of engagement and days where I had the lowest. So I typically now post finished pieces on my good days and wips, sketches, small stuff on worse days (statistically).
      Youll get there!!

    • @SorenSleepy
      @SorenSleepy  2 года назад +5

      @@jdoe2737 You can definitely just post your artwork and not interact. It is something some people do. The one example I can think of is Hungry Clicker on twitter. They post almost 0 posts besides art with no caption. They follow 0 people and have half a million followers.
      If you want to grow your audience, it is unfortunately something you'll have to learn to overcome. I am introverted as well and I have very little social energy and I prefer being alone. However you can start small. Tell people you like their art. If you see an interesting artwork ask them how they did a specific thing. Like whats your process for drawing details on armor, or what was the idea for the fruit iris's. Things like that.
      If you just want to draw and post it online to share, you don't need to overcome these barriers. But as a general, I guess lesson I've learned in life, is most things, you won't accomplish on your own. Having people around you to support you or help you is invaluable. But you have to live your life in a way that works for you and overcome those obstacles on your own. Internet audiences aren't a be-all-end-all and if art is something you want to pursue there is a professional environment which won't take too much of an account of your online success in terms of engagement and would be more interested in your portfolio, ideas and skills.

    Literally started an art Twitter yesterday. Fanart for some popular animes I like. I have no idea how to operate Twitter or get my stuff out there, but I know on wattpad I started getting reads because I engaged a lot with readers on my story and I commented and goofed off with other people’s work. Chances are that on any platform if you interact and are nice to people (reblogging, retweeting, sharing their work and commenting and such) they will check you out and interact back. I literally went from 0 followers to 700 in a year just because I interacted with people and talked about their stuff openly out of a place of genuine love for their work. Obviously wattpad is different from Twitter, and wattpad is more for writing than anything else, but you get the point.

    • @SorenSleepy
      @SorenSleepy  3 года назад +8

      Oh yeah I definitely agree with this point 100%. I think its something a lot of people struggle with, since getting out of your bubble is really difficult, but no one stands at the top of success as a lone wolf (or in MOST cases). Twitter is 100% the same way, if you take time to interact with people regularly who might draw the same stuff, you might look up to them, or you have something in common, odds are theyll notice you and check you out after they become familiar with you. This video was just 100% about the tags affecting your visibility, since twitters algorithm is really wonky and it changes quite often depending on new features and just however they are internally thinking it should be shaken up. It always bothers me when people say social media is up to luck. There is a percentage to luck and audience building, but its not something you can't push in your favour by putting in the time and effort to reach out.

    I post a lot of drawings myself, and what I find is what *I* usually think will get tons of likes and retweets, I tend to overestimate.
    The ones that are either requested or I didn't think would get as much attention, would get more likes and retweets.
    Honestly, getting recognition on social media, as a whole, can be very fleeting(even though I appreciate people liking the drawings I post)....
    Sometimes it's just better to create art and post it because you genuinely love doing art. It's not just for the sake of getting something in return.

    • @SorenSleepy
      @SorenSleepy  3 года назад +5

      Social media is a very tricky thing. Theres so many variables that go into it like posting to accomodate an algorithm, hopping on things like fanart trends or art memes, different styles might be more eye catching or catch more general of an audience, being consistent daily, maybe youre posting on the wrong days at the wrong time for traffick, networking and engaging with your audiences and even more stuff beyond that.
      I definitely agree that its a good mentality to have "i draw for myself and im just sharing it" and thats really freeing. But a lot of people do seek the validation from seeing a newer piece out do their last one. Like yes im moving in the right direction.
      Since making this video, I found the days that work well, so if im going to post a full and detailed piece I know the date/time itll hopefully be most effective but evem if its not ill keep retweeting it or bumping in replies. I also dont have issues with just posting wips or sketches. I kinda wanna make an art tip video maybe sometime in the future for exposure on social media.

      Im so glad this helped someone! I was actually considering taking this down a while ago since the majority of my channel is just silly video game stuff, but this was something I felt passionate about and wanted to see for myself. Im sure there is a lot missing from this in terms of real data analysis, but for something superficial like counting likes/retweets I felt like it was simple enough to get the point across. There are definitely factors, like maybe it stumbled upon someone with a large followings feed and they liked/retweeted it themselves, but I think that just reinforces the idea that retweeted/reposting your own art to help it get further and get seen by bigger audiences works!
      As just some advice, posting art every single day is draining and unless you become some art god like Kim Jung Ji and can just draw beautiful images in mere minutes. Posting WIPs, even if its the same piece everyday just with a bit more work done on it, keeps you feed active along with reposting or retweeting your own art. Also if you happen to try and repost your artwork kind of like how I did, keep track of which days you get the most success. Those would be the days you'd wanna post something finished, and for me those days were typically Tues/Thurs and they continue to be my busiest days in terms of youtube/streaming/art (typically!!). Another important thing is that sometimes people will be drawn to you for your personality, so I definitely recommend making text posts or polls on days you don't really have much to share to interact with people. Ask questions, see their opinions on stuff you're interested in and stuff like that! Best of luck on your twitter adventure and I hope this helps it be a little more successful!

      No problem! Just remember that proper usage of hashtags is not particularly a detriment to your own artwork. Im involved in the Final Fantasy XIV community so adding things that are relevant to those community tags would be beneficial to my artwork compared to something more general like #animeart or something similar since they are very generic and not something people will be looking for. But not tagging is also an option for your artwork since your text in the post will be a search result.

    this is one of the things that i hate about the internet
    big part of your fame is simply luck based
    like what your art is SO GOOD you definitely deserve more but its hard when everything is just based on luck most of the time

    • @SorenSleepy
      @SorenSleepy  2 года назад +3

      Don't think of it luck based. There is a definitely a luck component, but there are things you can actively do to increase those chances. Be active, network etc.
      Also artwork to be noticed on social media doesn't have to be good, it just has to be appealing which isn't the same. Lots of artwork on twitter is relatively underwhelming or very basic, but it can get a lot of likes just because it looks at a first glance pretty.
      Good art isn't always the most appealing but it really depends on peoples view point. Some great artists don't know how to use social media and go unnnoticed, and some more amateurish artists know how to use social media so their artwork can go further in terms of likes/retweets/followers. Your social media appeal does not directly correspond to your skill as an artist.
      We limit ourselves by the things we choose to show on social media instead of embracing it as a medium. Many artists use twitter as a gallery site, which it is definitely not. It is fine to post wips, process, repost the same piece of artwork multiple times if you don't have anything, and its not cheap or cheating to do so. Its working within your means against a system that is hungry for as much interaction as it can get from you, and you have to find ways to feed it without jeopardizing your own relationship with art to satisfy and algorithm.

      It depends on what hashtags you're using which will ultimately decide how they help you or harm you. If you're using stuff like #digitalartist #artistontwitter #art incredibly generic tags you're harming your own success. If you're into like, Genshin impact and you're like #Xiao that will help you much more.

      What I would recommend more than worrying about hashtags is 1) using correct hashtags and don't spam them. Be more specific and less general if you do choose to use hashtags and 2) make sure between your art posts you are being active in otherways. Unfortunately the algorithm can sometimes be hit or miss, nothing is 100% guaranteed to grow your audience, but talking to others artists, networking and being open to conversation/starting conversation will get you the best results. While my twitter isn't particularly huge, ive maintained steady growth since uploading this video. And while sometimes we can boom unexpectedly, the best we can really do it try to remain consistent as we can and expand our social network as much as possible to guarantee more success than hoping for it.

    • @SorenSleepy
      @SorenSleepy  2 года назад +2

      This is an incredibly late reply, but the best way for people you want to see your stuff to see it is to build and audience that is interested in your work or the subject matter/style/medium. It takes a long time. It takes a lot of interacting with other people and getting out of your own comfort zones.
      Hashtags aren't always harmful, but using to many will definitely have a negative impact on your work. A lot of keeping up with social media stuff is using trends are a good boost. So if you see something trending, use those tags if its relevant to what you're posting. Use art share threads to get yourself out there and find other artists.

For a big example, I am HUGE into FFXIV. Its where most of my views on youtube come from, my twitter followers, hell I've made so many friends interacting in that community and it is MASSIVE. While its not a 1:1 comparison, FFXIV tags trend a lot in gaming, and participating actively in a community that brings you joy and you enjoy being apart of is going to make you someone who is compelling to people just looking for content.
      If you're going to go the trendy route too, just make sure you're using the one or two trendy hashtag and don't bloat it with like #commission #digitalart #art #portrait no one is realistically looking for that and it looks messy in presentation.
      Also the last thing about hashtag is don't only post them in - interact within them. You might find artists or other people who you think are cool and could potentially develop relationships with, be friend and learn from. Its a never ending battle, but just make sure you're not someone who is popping up once a month with art and has nothing else to offer than a picture with an overwritten caption and 5 random tags.

    • @SorenSleepy
      @SorenSleepy  Год назад +1

      Okay so this video is getting to be 2 years old but its more to use relevant hashtags. So if something is trending at the moment, use the hashtag. If something isn't particularly popular, for example say you really like some obscure anime so you drew some character from it and no one even knows what it is yet cause it was never popular, then don't bother using a hashtag.
      Keep captions short or long is more a personal choice. Is it long because you wanna be like "I spent 7 days and 7 nights slaving away at the details on her shirt and I think I could have done better but I figured this was good enough so I posted it" Then no, don't do that. Try and make your caption engaging. Ask a question, give a description of a scene, accompany it with some relevant words. You just don't want something incredibly boring, long winded.
      Make sure to feed the algorithm and also post during active hours for the regions that look at your work.

      I made this video about 2 years ago and I've neglected to make a follow up - I agree with his advice, but its not as clear cut as just saying "Don't use hashtags unless they're trending" There are dozens of other factors that go into your artwork succeeding than just using a hashtag or not.

      However for an explanation -
      Hashtags arent a definitive end all to the success of your artwork on twitter. Whether you use them or not you can have failure or success. Twitter wants engagement, twitter wants you to be active, the caption you include can draw people in, the subject matter of the drawing, how well your piece reads at a glance in terms of shape language/strong colours etc.
      Proper tagging is just a small portion of a dozen factors that go into being somewhat successful on twitter.

    I'm sorry I'm so twitter ignorant, but how are you "adding" hashtags if you're not actually using hashtags? Are you just not using the # sign and writing the keyword in the tweet text? Are you replying to your tweet with hashtags?

    • @SorenSleepy
      @SorenSleepy  2 года назад +8

      You basically got it yeah. I'm not replying to my own tweets, just using specific keywords in the description without the #
      So for example if I posted something and was like
      Fanart of #TomNook from #ACNH ;
      Those # will essentially create a link that will lower your visibility from the algorithm UNLESS the tag is a trending tag at the moment or active. If Animal Crossing is not really being talked about at the time, then you're hurting your own post. Though ACNH is pretty popular so it might not actually hurt you tooooo bad.
      But something like
      Fanart of Tom Nook from ACNH ;
      That would, in most cases perform better since there are no hashtags to make the algorithm identify the hashtag as a link off of twitter.
      You could alternatively add hashtags in your replies if you want too, I do not believe that would hurt your post. I personally do not do that though.
      Also just a word of note; things like #animeart #digitalart #illustration, those like filler tags a lot of people use, they aren't good to use. No one search those vague terms. Be as specific as possible with your keywords or any hashtags you use if you choose to use them

      @@xxbabypandaytxx4165 I think it really depends how you go about it. Theres a lot more information I should have obtained for this video that I didnt realize till after the fact. So the issue is a lot more complex than yes tags help or no they dont.
      Theres a lot more nuance to the answer than yes or no because there are too many possibilities for tagging. If you tag with generic stuff like digitalart animeart people arent specifically looking for that so in that case your tags arent even helping as much as they could be. Same with too much tagging, it looks spammy. Using tags like "GuiltyGearStriveSol" or "Persona5Fanart" are much more specific and might suit your needs better. Something trending like PortfolioDay or ArtvsArtists or BoobMeme would have people looking for it more actively if you get on trends.
      I think one thing that helps is doing something similar to what I did. Repost your work everyday and see which days are your best for posting and try to be as consistent and active on the platform on a daily basis as possible.
      After doing this little experiment and thinking on this video for the last 6+ months I dont think tagging will hurt you unless you add to many tags or tags that arent specific enough for the audience you want to present your work too.
