    no rubbing exhaust just internal squeeking.
    broke down engine to timing chain found it was a bad tensioner.
    keep small coffee cans to label and separate bolts and put back in reverse order.
    thanks bud(old friend that died last year, always gave me little coffee cans.)

    Wow, this video is inspirational. I've exact same engine on an MPV of 99 (Japan market). Also oil residue on the engine's rear. The gaskets etc need replacing. Fuel injectors need cleaning. May as well venture out now to do it myself with removing the air intake manifold. Thanks!

      bigbird385 Hi, Replacing the spark plugs does not require removing the manifold. The front ones are easy once you use an extender tool and for the rear three spark plugs just remove the ignition coil. Watch out to make a note of the spark plug cables - which goes where - before disconnecting from the coil.

    I have watched this so many times just to get my motivation lol. I love how exact and detailed you are. I need to do my valve cover gaskets but also need to replace the ingnition coil pack ASAP on my 2001 mpv exact car you are showing. I have not been able to find any correct videos. Do I have to remove everything as if I am doing the gaskets just to remove that coil pack? I really am trying to avoid disconnecting everything right now. Thank Jennifer

    I have a 2000 Mazda Millenia with a 2.5 L V6 and 132,000 miles on it. The engine has started making a very noticeable knocking sound at idle, but it gets quieter when I speed up the engine. This makes me think it could be a worn or damaged harmonic balancer (pulley damper) rather than something inside the engine. Do you have any experience with this type of problem? Just like to get your opinion before I start taking things apart. Thanks.

    • @ModMINI
      @ModMINI  9 лет назад

      New Jeffersonian I don't have experience with this engine and it could be anything, but usually knock is internal to the engine, most likely connecting rod bearings. A worn harmonic balancer would probably get worse as RPMs increase. Worn connecting rod, wrist pin or crankshaft bearings typically quiet down as engine load is increased.

    • @Bannington
      @Bannington 9 лет назад

      *****
      I appreciate your quick reply. The reason I think (and hope) it's the harmonic balancer is because I had one wear out on a 1992 Pontiac Firebird and it made the same kind of knocking sound. I first thought it was a serious internal problem and the engine was likely ruined, but a friend told me that if it got quieter rather than louder as the engine speeded up it was probably the harmonic balancer. When I got it off the crankshaft I found the cushioning material was badly worn and split. After replacing the balancer the engine ran smooth and quiet and I drove the car another 4 years.
      PS. Thanks much for making this video. Very informative.

    • @ModMINI
      @ModMINI  9 лет назад +1

      Bannington That is a possibility and should be readily evident by removing the right front wheel and looking past the wheel liner. Good luck.

    How long does it take you to do this job, an experience mechanic like yourself? I believed my 2000 MPV has the same issues, it's so bad that the exhaust muffler blowing bluish smoke. But after awhile it's not blowing anymore, perhaps you can tell me why. My engine oil level is not normal either. Thanks.

    • @ModMINI
      @ModMINI  8 лет назад

      I think it took around 4 hours. I've fixed a lot of cars but I've never worked on a Mazda before.

  • @dmable7969
    @dmable7969 9 лет назад +1

    The stick appeared normal maybe a little darker considering I just changed the oil 2weeks ago. So if it is the head gasket, will he process be the same...not that mechanically inclined but follow instruction.

    • @ModMINI
      @ModMINI  9 лет назад

      Head gasket is much more involved. You have to remove both intake and exhaust manifolds, coolant and camshaft sensor connections, as well as engine timing.

    • @rudyw.5216

      no need to take out intake manifold, I don't remember if i needed to move aside the igniter box but definitely you have enough space to take out the rear plugs with an extension, getting spark plug wire puller makes job easier but not a must

    Warning! this video is 10 years old. My 2001 MPV is now 23 years old, 156K miles. FIRST check to see if you can unbolt the "Exhaust Recirculation Manifold," (shown here at 2:50 - 2:57). If you cannot remove those two steel bolts into the aluminum intake manifold (rusted solid ??)... you will never be able to remove the intake manifold and complete this job. A propane torch on the aluminum has not helped.
    EDITED: 24 hours with WD-40, then an 18" braker bar with 10mm socket was successful on the frozen bolts of the Exhaust Reciruc Manifold, after 23 years.

    Are the new gaskets an upgrade that eliminates the need for the sillcone bead?

    • @ModMINI
      @ModMINI  8 лет назад

      +Philip Arndt Sorry, I'm not sure. Many gaskets the bead is not required but at a sharp corner like that, it's a good habit to put a small bead there just in case and to eliminate any chance of future leak from that spot.

    hey question, i just bought a 2000 mpv and i noticed the vac tube unpluged and wasnt sure were it went to but after this vid u mention during the uninstall that it was the activation vac. if thats un hooked how bad is that for the car? as of right now the car runs fine with no issues. also, the heater lines rnt hooked up to the in/out ports on the fire wall, where would the ports be on the motor located? thanks.

      @ModMINI  8 лет назад

      +hcracer1985 Hello - I don't know what the line does but over time it will probably cause a check engine light or affect efficiency. If it was me I'd want to fix it. I've only worked on this Mazda a couple times. I'm not sure about your second question, sorry.
