- The ASTRA Museum of Folkloric Traditional civilization is situated at 4 km from Sibiu city, in a stunning scenery in the Dumbrava Natural Park. It is a fascinating museum which should be put on the list of things to see in Sibiu.
It is the ideal location to discover the traditional rural Romanian lifestyle, while taking a relaxing walk in the middle of the nature.
The Museum is home to over 400 traditional architecture and technology monuments, together with thousands of other ethnographic objects. The 10 km of alleys will take you among peasant homesteads, workshops, small wooden churches, wind and water mills.
What is truly fascinating about ASTRA Museum is that it contains a vast collection of buildings from all over Romania. The houses will tell you about the simple life of Romanian peasants, their occupations and traditions.
The museum offers several other entertainment options: boat rides, carriage rides and horse-drawn sledge rides, a restaurant, accommodation and playgrounds.
In summer, the museum is animated by numerous events - almost no week passes by without a cultural event!
There is also a traditional restaurant here and an excellent shop stocking books and folklore items including a range of woven and embroidered textiles and traditional costumes.
A visit to the Open-air Museum will most certainly turn into a very special experience!

I love places like these, I used to go to a lot of old museums or just farms open to the public to see the old houses and to see how people used to live. It is amazing to see and I can see a lot of similarities to Sweden.

Really a beautiful open air museum ! Its so relaxing to watch this video , even the ducks also seems taking it easy and having lazy days :) .
This is definitely my kind of museum to go to. Not into the traditional type of indoor/inside the building museum, but this outdoor/open air type because one can really feel the setting as you go around. These houses are picture worthy and I could imagine myself riding the horse-drawn carriage as I tour this area.
