I was disappointed that most of these speeds were done in lakes. I suppose dead water is the only water you could do those. Still would've been great to know the fastest and had the least structural damage on moving water (decent size waves) Im wasnt interested in skipping boats. Thats like saying a shuttlecar (which can go to 1000mph) and you cant drive them on the road or even street legal. It think 80 mph is the fastest one you could go when it comes to non oceanic waters.

The jet engine used in the Spirit of Australia was built in the 1940’s. Hence why he managed to get it so cheap. A power craft record from 1978 still stands now, amazing.
I never thought that record would still be standing over 40 years after i saw this boat in practice runs, holy crap, it was the loudest thing id ever heard back then. That boat, screaming down the dam at over 300 mph, was a sight to see, couple hundred feet long rooster tail flying off the back, Weren't many 15 year old boys got to see that. my year ten class on interstate tour were the only ones i know of.(pity our school tour bus was broken down on the opposite side of the dam ) . Would have loved to have a closer look .

I was at the Ozark shootout when the Quatar beat the record, that was the same day that another boat driver and his co-pilot died because the boat caught air and flipped, very sad but very exciting day for me I was about 8 years old.
Only one died and that was three days later from complications in surgery. Owner and driver of the boat was fine and is still a customer to this day. Owner of the company was throttle man and many more details you don’t know. Don’t post what you don’t know
5:55 The record at the Lake of the Ozarks Shootout is unlikely to be broken anytime soon because they shortend the course to reduce terminal speeds following the blow-over death of Outerlimits owner Mike Fiore (sp?) and his co-driver. The Spirit of Qatar, same as the turbine Miss Gieco, is a Mystic hull and also raced (poorly) a few times against the Murcury powered version of Miss Gieco, CMS, and a few others. (Some of the Miss Gieco footage used here is the Mercury powered hull with 4 exhaust pipes sticking up out of the rear decks.) On a side note... LOTO is also home to Bob Bull's CMS Racing's 48 and 52ft Marine Technology Inc (MTI) cats powered by twin 1650hp Mercury racing 9.2L V8's. Bob also has a 3rd open cockpit cat. All are orange and silver. The CMS teams have pretty much spanked Gieco lately. Gieco also had a pretty nasty crash with another boat a few years ago.
Nice. I had a little hydrofoil when I was 12. It was really light weight , made of plywood. I put my evinrude 6.5 h.p. engine , and did around 35 or so. Later , against my better judgement , I let my neighbor take it out with an 18 horse outboard. He spooled it up to somewhere around 50 m.p.h. before he hit a wave and executed a perfect 360. Good times...
There's a slight error, LM2500 doesn't make 59000hp a piece. Depending on version, but two combined can do the 59000hp mentioned here. The newest version LM2500+ is advertised to make ~30MW, which would be abouts 40000 in horsepower.
The story behind the man at 12.01 reads like pure fantasy, almost single-handed he built that boat in his back yard in Sydney on a shoestring budget. Paid $79.00 for an obsolete J49 Westinghouse engine and set the World water speed record in 1977 and again in 78 and has held it ever since.

Nope, its 5000 Hp in that thing, but even with 5000hp, its impressive they made a yacht that big go 70 knots... Some can only go 30knots at max, norm is around 25 knots...

USS New Jersey is worth a mention, she had a top speed of 35.2 knots which doesn’t sound like much but considering she is a 60000ton monstrosity it’s pretty amazing,she had more than 200000hp and was faster than most modern yachts and warships.at that speed,she could probably create a wake like rouge wave
Should have mentioned Unlimited Hydroplanes. The turbine version of Miss Budweiser hit 220 for the kilometer UH record. The old Merlin, Allison or Griffon engined boats were capable of 170 in the straights. A couple of years ago a team ran a turbocharged Allison against the turbine boats with some good results.

The Boat at 10.57 has held the World Record for over 40 years. If you read the water speed record history you'll see why it could be the exception, attempts to go faster are basically unsurvivable.
After the 1st world record 1977 he got help from the Air Force to rebuild the engine so it did not need to use a afterburner for the 2nd world record in 1978 so not totaly build by him self but a impressive record. Think it is hes son who gona drive the Spirit of Australia II if i remember it right.

Please take note that the course that spirit of Qutar went 244mph on was only a mile long and it was a rolling start of 60mph.
They also had a premature parachute deployment on their initial run that could have been disastrous. I was at that shootout.
