I lived at Fort Drum on a civilian assignment for 2.5 years (2010-2012). I frequently went to Sackets Harbor for lunch or dinner on the weekend. I was completely fascinated by Madison Barracks. At that time, many of the buildings were abandoned and they were just starting to convert it to a livable village. Ulysses Grant spent time at Madison Barracks early in his military career. The historical ghosts that lived there just captivated me!
I was not born in Watertown but I was raised in Watertown and that field that you asked what it was you would be correct it is corn now it is cow corn they grow up and feed it to the cows and you heard of dispersion the Big Apple which a lot of people don't know this but that ball that drops every year is actually a big apple and the reason why we are known as the Big Apple it's because we grow apples as big as grapefruits the call 20 oz apples and like I said they're about as big as a grapefruit McIntosh Farms is one of the best places to get apples around here also you might want to try try the cheese curd the squeaker it is the fresher it is and you seen that Canada sign go check out the Canadian Bridge and go to Cape Vincent and take the boat Castle tour and you can check out the Thousand Islands also Sackets Harbor they still have the old barracks from the War of 1812 we also have the old Underground Railroad that ran right through Watertown all the way up to Canada there's a lot of history through here here in Watertown if you go to areas like Paddock Street you can check out the architecture on the buildings from way back in the 1800s Wendy's to come up here and build a house and if they didn't like it they tear down and start from scratch Paddock arcade downtown on the square if you walk through it look up and see the glass ceilings anyways there's just so much history here hope you enjoy it it's a good place to raise your child as long as it's not in Watertown no I'm just kidding but for real though Adams Center has one of the best school districts anyways before Fort Drum all that stuff you see out at for drums where trails and then Fort Drum expanded and took away the old Trails we used to ride dirt bikes on but that's enough of that enjoy and I guess in your part of the 10th Mountain division and you have a good enjoyment up here in Watertown and surrounding areas PS Dexter is also the mouth of the Lake Ontario the Great Lakes the spread all the way up through Canada like I said the Thousand Islands fun fact thousand island dressing actually came from here Gouverneur is a home of the Lifesavers Richard Grieco the movie stars from here few other famous people
