  • An accused killer told a Hamilton courtroom on Friday that she may be the “stupidest person in the world” for getting involved in a murder. Lucy Li was on the witness stand for the closing submissions in the trial where she and her husband Oliver Karafa, face first degree murder charges.
On her fifth day on the witness stand, as the trial came to an end Li was asked about her response to the crown prosecutor’s suggestion that she “planned and deliberated over what should have been a double murder.”
Li replied, “I meant that’s ridiculous because I would never kill anybody. I would never be part of a plan to kill anybody. I would never be ok with a plan to kill anybody. If I’d known, I’d have put a stop to it.”
Li and Karafa are accused of shooting and killing 30-year-old Tyler Pratt in 2021 at a Stoney Creek warehouse where they were trying to work out a business deal.
Pratt’s girlfriend Jordyn Romano was shot and injured. She was pregnant and lost her baby.
Li’s lawyer asked about the prosecution’s suggestion that Li is “clever” and was part of an “elaborately thought out” plan.
Li replied, “I don’t think I’m clever. Sitting here today I think I’m the stupidest person in this room, in the world maybe.”
She said, “I married a man who shot not just a woman but a pregnant woman as well as another guy and I missed so many red flags and I continued to be in love with him and I really feel like an idiot right now.”
When asked about the purpose of the trial she said, “most importantly to find justice for the victims in this case.”
She described the victims as “The unborn baby first. I think Jordyn. I think Tyler and Tyler’s family.”
Li testified that she was on the other side of the warehouse in Stoney Creek when the shooting happened and didn’t even know anybody had been shot. Although Jordyn Romano said Li was standing in front of the car where she was sitting.
Li testified that the murder victim, Pratt, was “dangerous” and the court heard that a business deal with Pratt was going badly.
Li said Karafa told her the shooting was in self-defense, that “it was him or me, they wanted to kill us.”
Li and her husband Karafa are both charged with first degree murder and attempted murder.
Karafa didn’t testify and his lawyer did not call any witnesses.
The judge told the jury that the lawyers would deliver their final arguments next week so the jury could then begin their deliberations.
