I hate to nag but as someone who has very brittle uncontrollable asthma NEVER EVER risk driving yourself or waiting it out when you start to feel wheezy. It is so dangerous to go in someone else's car because if you pass out or worse then they can't help. Always call 999 because they can start immediate treatment. Obviously as it's been so long since you've had a severe attack you've risked the travel to a nearby hospital but honestly from personal experience, never risk it again, 999 and keep taking your inhaler as many times as you need until they arrive. Hope you're feeling better. Take care xxx

@@JillCarman thank you yes we won't do that again, it just honestly didn't occur to us at the time that we needed an ambulance. Even when receiving care I felt like I was wasting peoples time 🙈 but I know now its a 999 call x

    • @JillCarman

@fifefreecleaning you've been incredibly lucky tbh, the fact you started to get blue lips means that your oxygen levels were dangerously low. It's so scary to deal with. I wasn't asthmatic as a child but developed it as an adult and it's uncontrollable sadly so I've dealt with this for years now and I see people just brush it off not realising how close to death they have been. My advice if it happens again always ring 999, sit upright, take inhaler as much as needed, don't move around, don't use your energy on anything but staying calm and trying to get deep slow breaths in and out. I'm sorry for nagging but the grandma in me just hates the thought of you risking not calling 999 because you don't think it's serious enough. If it's not been a bad attack when the crew. One out then that's ok, better to be safe xxx

To anyone reading OPs comment - this is solid advice. I'm an NHS24 nightshifter and deal with this regularly. If it's as bad as you've described, you call 999. If it's not quite that bad but you can't get it under control or you live more than a 5 min drive from an A&E dept (ie. Your local hospital is community with MIU) then you call 111 and select the emergency option. We can find the nearest location of care or figure out how to get care to you - whichever is faster and most appropriate to the circumstances. The irony is that it's people like you we are there to help and you don't call, yet the lines are clogged up with folk who have a runny nose or a random pain for a whole 10mins that they expect a diagnosis for over the phone 😡.
Bottom line, when your breathing is compromised (especially if you have a respiratory Dx) then you act on seeking medical assistance as though it is an emergency. If you're hesitant in establishing that, count to 10 out loud. If you have to stop for breath in between or struggle to get to the end then you are validly compromised. It's frightening the amount of folk who don't call because they "don't want to bother you or waste your time". We're here to help you in emergency/urgent situations. You're keeping me in a job! 😅
      999 for ambulance
      111 for NHS24 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿
Edited to reenforce the "do not drive yourself" aspect to this. This is an absolute red line. The outcome will be catastrophic if you pass out while driving. NEVER drive yourself in a medical emergency or episode of severe illness that may impair your judgement. Always get someone else to drive if you are attending your location of care independently.

I hope you won't mind me offering a small piece of advice here, but I truly believe you might find it helpful. Apologies if I'm stepping over any lines her.
Where I live, we can purchase "Bag Buddy's," which are essentially just collapsible wire frames designed to hold trash bags open.
For jobs like this one, we use the largest size available to hold industrial trash bags. One person (obviously wearing good knee pads) crawls ahead of the person bagging, tossing all the trash behind them, while keeping an eye open for any personal items or valuables that might otherwise be discarded with the trash.
A second person uses a plastic scoop shovel to transfer the trash into the bags.
While it does take more time to sort than it does to shovel, it usually works out because the one shoveling also needs to tie-off and replace the bags as they are filled. That person also has to occasionally take the time to haul the filled bags out to the dumpster, giving the sorter a bit of extra time to gain some ground.
I know it seems like a waste to have an extra person sorting, but given the complex emotional issues often associated with this sort of situation... well, I'm sure I don't need to explain further.

There are so many useful tools out there that you won't ever know about unless you stumble upon them or someone mentions that it exists. Letting people know about them is always a good thing to do IMO because in the worst case the person already knows they exist, but most of the time they might not even know it is a thing
Anyone who gets mad about something like this because they know about it is a person who needs therapy tbh because there is no need to get mad over something so simple and harmless

An air filter might be helpful. It won't prevent the need for a dust mask but it'll help clear the dust that gets thrown into the air as you move and clear the clutter. If you get one that uses the paper filters you'll be able to chuck them after every job so you'll not be cross contaminating.

Even a little can cause problems. I cannot go down the laundry soap aisle at the grocery stores. I will take a deep breathe, run down and get my soap and then run back to my cart. As someone who grew up in a hoarding house... I hate having clutter, or disorganization. I can handle some, but if it hangs around too long or I feel like there's too much stuff around in a close space, I have issue. Usually drives me into a freaky cleaning mode, and sometimes results in me moving things or throwing away stuff I regret getting rid of later because at that time I'd rather just see it gone. However, now that my mental health has gotten better and my husband is aware of this issue, I'm able to sort this out much easier.
Watching these videos sometimes helps remind me that I'm not actually in this situation anymore... It's just a little untidy, and thats okay as long as it doesn't go unchecked and your health isn't in danger.

It took me a long time to even be able to face cleaning at all because it was associated with that, making me into a pretty unclean person in the first years of living on my own. took me a long time to get over it, but now i feel less moralistic about cleaning. im not "failing" by not doing the dishes every single night, so i dont have any failure to "confront" by just getting around to em (:

First, GOOD JOB DANIELLE being your best friends ride or die. You saved her life, and that is amazing. Stephanie, I’m sooooooo glad you’re still here on earth with us. What a terribly scary thing. Please invest in a top of the line rebreather or filtration system to wear while you’re working in these houses. I don’t know how much they cost, but I’d look for something that is supposed to keep you safe in dangerous or poisonous environments. Like tented houses when they are trying to kill termites. Im sure there is something available for people who work with those kinds of chemicals regularly and need their bodies protected, especially their airways. Immediately after you’re done, go home and shower, so none of the residue on your skin gets into your lungs. And please, if you ever get to that point again, and now you know exactly how you feel when you’re in big danger, don’t drive yourself! Call 999, get out into fresh air. I also think there’s something you can set up on your phone that will make a phone call for you in case of emergency. Either a text or a voice message. Just in case you find yourself in the position where you can’t catch your breathe enough to speak. So that people (husband, family, Danielle) don’t think it’s just a butt dial, or a bad connection, there will be a possibility you’re on the line but can’t breath. Come up with a plan so everyone will know you may be in crisis. And go to your regular MD. See if it’s time to change your meds to something stronger for regular use, and maybe even a stronger medication in case of asthma attack. I know my mom had equipment at her home that allowed her to give herself a breathing treatment with a steroid based inhalant. She lived way out in the country away from the hospital. So it was a godsend! Now, please listen to your doctor and lay around and just allow your body to regain its strength and heal your lungs. It’s already working hard just doing that!!!

As a fellow asthmatic, I so appreciated this story! It's not talked about enough, and as another commenter stated, because of media/pop-culture/movies etc. it's not taken as seriously - an inhaler is a prop for the "dork" or whatever. The only film I've seen take asthma more seriously was "Signs" and even then, it was sort of a gimmick.
I'm so glad you are ok and were able to receive the care to save your life! It's always so scary. I was diagnosed with asthma as an infant, so it's been all I know. Because of that, I do not always take my attacks as seriously as I should, and especially as an adult have had too many close calls with thinking I can power through them when I should have gone to the ER. Also, pretty much everything is a trigger for my asthma - especially cigarette smoke which I'm also allergic to. I can see myself having made the same choices you did during that cleaning and getting myself into the same trouble. Please take care of yourself, and I'll promise to take better care of myself with my asthma too! This is a good reminder to not risk delaying on getting help.

Do not underestimate the effects of cigarette smoke that lingers in soft furnishings and clothing. I used to get asthma attacks when clients (children) came in with their parent’s cigarette smoke clinging to their coats snd clothes.
I cannot imagine all the things in that filthy home that could trigger your Asthma. I am glad you are recovering. I understand the feeling of not calling emergency services. Denial is common and that is why it is important for those around you to not take “No” for an answer when it comes to calling them.

I’m so relieved you’re okay, Steph, and thank y’all for spreading awareness about just how serious asthma really is- I never really thought about what an (ironically) silent killer it is, nor how immensely common asthma-related deaths are. The house looks like a whole new place after the clean-up, even if it isn’t as extensive as other free cleans, and I know that family is immeasurably thankful; as someone who struggles greatly with Fibro + other chronic health problems/hella chronic pain, I’d literally be hysterical in gratitude. I have asthma, too. Watching thi svid I can see you guys are hard workers and accomplished so much in the time you were there. I darn near choked every time you squeezed and puched down on every bag as you tied it shut. That air that escapes from that foul and dangerous dust and air blew right into your face, mask or no mask. Those masks (respirators) can only filter out so much before they are plugged and the filters need to be changed. You may have asked to much of your filters. Also when you take them off and put them on again, if your hands are not free on contaminants you are introducing bad things into the insides of those respirators. Pay attention to these details I have mentioned or you may end up in this situation again. Bless you for what you do for free and I am wishing you many more years of this gift you are giving to others.

The husband of one of my friends died of an asthma attack. Super fit guy, always in the gym, ate healthy, barely ever had issues with his asthma. No idea what triggered it, but it was 25 mins from the start of the attack to him dying. The ambulance arrived too late and there was nothing they could do. I have just for cleaning at home, with dusty areas, a full body covering for painting, by 3M, whiich is disposible but I don't throw it away, but have washed it a few times since it is washable..I wear it because dust will trigger MY asthma, plus, the less dust you get on your hair, skin and clothing, the less you have to deal with when you get home, or when you remove the cleaning suit. There also may have been toxic black mould that caused the asthma attack.. for me, a week in the rain, at almost freezing, and then the dry air on the airplane caused me to get near to an asthma attack, but not a full blown attack, just elevated breating, and lower 02 levels, I still didn't need an inhaler, which was good considering quite a few years ago I was depending upon it, now I haven't used one in over 10 years, thankfully. It's scary with asthma, and strange enviornments is, sometimes you just don't know. Take care.

Do you have a spacer for your inhaler? It’s a tube to add onto your inhaler. If you can taste your inhaler, you’re not using effectively. Use a spacer, shake it, squeeze it, breathe it. Wait a few minutes, then repeat per your doctor. Retired CRT. You can periodically clean your spacer with hot soapy water and vinegar, rinse. Allow to dry on a clean towel. Re-assemble. 💙

I'm so glad you made it through, this is genuinely scary. I was in a burnout and I'm pretty good at cleaning (and love videos like this) but I've always considered that I'm not built for this activity with my asthma. I wanted to do volunteering, but chose not to.
I think that everything in there will have exacerbated it simultaneously: mice fur, mice droppings, dust, smoke, but also things like mold from rotten products.
I also wanted to give another piece of info, and I have no idea if this is the case for you. I've had asthma all my life and I always had an inhaler. I got tested recently at 40yo and they said: oh well, you actually have TWO types of asthma. I sat there going.... excuse me what? I've had asthma all my life, why don't I know that there's more than one type? So essentially one of them is the allergy related, and the other one is a chronic inflammation of the airways (sort of the surface in your windpipe and lungs is constantly upset (swollen), also releases more fluids than in normal people, leading to narrowed airways, frequent coughing). They gave me TWO inhalers. Now, for the first time in my entire life BOTH of my asthma types are being treated and it is absolutely a world of difference. I was tested after 6 months of the using the new inhalers and my lung functionality had improve 18%.....!!!!?! This is nuts!!!! And I have SO MUCH MORE ENERGY. I didn't even realize how much it had been wearing me down.
TL;DR frequent your lung doctor at the hospital to check the status of your asthma (especially if you've had it all your life), they may have better meds that suit your specific needs and make a real difference.
