One note on the glitching issue; This happened to me on my Sony player, but also to the other person on a Panasonic. That’s what leads me to believe it could be a disc issue.
I noticed when looking at the comparison stills between 1080P and 4K, that those labeled 4K came before those labeled 1080P, and the 1080P labeled stills looked sharper. Did they get mislabeled?
That's some pretty good sharpness for artificial. Makes a good case for having both versions but we shouldn't have to choose; they should know better because it's their job to maintain their property.
Just checked my Theatrical Bluray Disc from the 4K set, at the troubled points mentioned, and no issues for me thankfully. Loving the 4K print, although I really was hoping for an Atmos track for this, my all time favourite movie. Great new extras on the Bonus section too, for die hard fans of this movie and Cameron Crowe's. Also bought the Cine HMV edition here in UK, but will keep that sealed for now.
Just popped in my theatrical 4K disc from the set and played the movie from 45 min mark all the way to the 80 minute mark an no issues. I don't think all the discs have the freezing issue. I am using a Samsung 4K player and detected no issues with my disc.
I prefer untitled the longer cut of almost famous it has a lot of extra footage like penny lane's birthday. Love the led zeppelin songs they played in the movie that's the way, rain song one of my favorite songs and tangerine a great song. Todd rundgren songs and so many great songs mona lisa and mad hatter's by elton john. One of the best movie's i've seen. I hope the 4k is awesome.
Wouldn't have minded a mention of the resolution of the various supplementary materials since they're what would cause me to upgrade from my Bootleg Cut BD, nor what's been added to the previous bonus stuff. But thanks for the note to check the theatrical cut. Wouldn't have examined that disc at all, ordinarily.
This is one of my all time faves. All I had was the dvd, so this 4k is absolutely Fantastic video and audio wise. Best I’ve seen or heard it, hands down. I watched the bootleg cut with no issues whatsoever. I Love the Full version, with scenes that more thoroughly tie things together. Like seeing the film for the first time. I must say that this is one of the best transfers I’ve seen. And I love the near full screen aspect. The Colors Really pop on this and it’s SO clear! Detailed, Beautiful. And the Music sounds So much better! Completely different experience watching this. In a Massively good way
Thanks to this review, I held off for a bit just so they could work out any bugs but I JUST received my copy today. I love this movie and this release is just stellar if you’re a big fan. Getting BOTH cuts of the movie on 4K in one package is a dream come true. Yeah, it’s not a night and day difference from the blu Ray but I’d say it’s big enough to warrant the purchase. I bought it at $18 and I’m more than happy with what I got. Great review!

My " ready player one 4k " freezes in my sony players, but not my Panasonic. Game of thrones season 8 ,also freezes, its always a movie thats over 2 hours long,about 2/3 the way thru. I love Almost Famous, one of my top 10 fav films. Recently saw Black Widow, awesome action film ,loved it on disney plus . Will miss you Scarlett, thanks for your excellent work💜💜🔥
Think I'll just settle for the Paramount Presents Blu ray. I have been getting all of those (and the transfers have all been very nice and look amazing upscaled on my Oppo UDP-203) and this doesn't sound like an earth shattering 4k release so I think I won't be missing too much with the Blu ray only version.
You reviewed the Sony X-700 a while back. I have that, and had the freezing issue. If that’s what you are still using then turn off the 4K upscaling and see if that fixes your issue. It did for me. I’ll be updating to the Panasonic 820 in the future.
The X700 has problems in case of triple layer BD100 discs and freezes or starts to lag when switching to the third layer. I'm also suffering from this issue with my X700 with almost all BD100 playback and it's super annoying. But for me this has never happened on BD66 or 1080p BD50 discs so far and this movie has been reportedly released on BD66 discs for both cuts.
Thanks for the tip. My panosonic will usually play movies that " freeze" with no problem. However sometimes on a new 4k disc, the pani says cant read...its frustrating to say the least. I have a C9 oled from LG, with a sony es 1100 4k, n Panasonic 820 4knplayer hooked up to it. Moved my 700 to my cheap vizio. Also nakamichi shockwafe sound bar. Its a nice setup but $$$$
Hey Jeff! It's interesting that you say that about the disc not working about halfway through. I've had the same problems with many disc's but most recently it was with Paramounts 4K disc of Super 8. Before that it was with Saving Private Ryan. I don't know if this is a trend or something but I thought I'd let you know.
Disagree with your comments on picture quality Jeff. I think this is a marked improvement over the Blu ray and looks like an accurate representation of the movie as it was intended.
I love when that happens. My first viewing of Apocalypse Now was on blu-ray projected to a 105" screen. Somehow I avoided seeing it on a crappy, small tube television all those years and that was my first experience. It would be even better in 4K!
Episode 3 out of 6 Season 8 with about three minutes left to go in the episode freezes up on my Game of Thrones Steelbook. It’s very frustrating. I obviously know what happens in the story, but having a broken product like that really sucks. And I can’t just buy another season 8 disc because it came as part of a set and would look out of place. Knowing that this disc might also freeze up makes not want to buy it, but I love Almost Famous and I only have the DVD at the moment.
I had an issue on a couple of discs from got 4k. Season 3 had a brief pause i had to skip past and the one you mentioned. I didn't get steelbook but its 4k. There were 2 other episodes as well I forget which seasons.

Dany comforts him and Drogon covers up both of them and then Melisandre walks out and takes off her necklace and withers away. That’s where your disc froze too and it wasn’t the steelbook? That was the only spot I had any trouble. Everything else was perfectly fine.
It’s a brilliant autobiographical movie of Cameron Crowe, always loved it. However from what you say this isn’t a 4K option for me. Glitch aside it just doesn’t seem worth the price difference for the mediocre visual upgrade.
I saw this once - when it was released in the cinema. I remember just two things from this movie: 1) the "Tiny Dancer" scene; and 2) Kate Hudson's legs...
I can't stand when they don't do seamless branching for different versions. Such a waste of plastic. Could have shoved extras on a blu-ray disc and put both versions on a 4k disc with seamless branching.
Not having Atmos is no excuse. This kills physical media. The few dying breed who are left like us, care about Atmos and best quality picture. Checkout The doors bought the steel from uk on steel and its reference!!! Atmos is just incredible on that release.
@@zhugh9556 the lack of Atmos caused me to cancel my preorder. Its a big deal to those of us who have spent a lot of money on receivers and speakers to get that layered sound dolby atmos provides. I'm sticking with my bluray copy now.
@@mark_in_mi My statement was in regards to "most people" and while I don't have any way of knowing for certain short of paying Gallup to run a poll I still think that for the majority of people who buy physical copies of movies the lack of object-based sound remixes is not a deal breaker. But I could be wrong, just the impression I get from sales numbers of particular 4k discs.
Why would a movie like this ever need height channels? Total non issue for me. It’s already in surround sound. Just use an up-mixer. Anyways I love Atmos too, but some films just won’t benefit.

I should like this movie because I like the music of that time ( I also read that the band in this movie was inspired by both Eagles and Led Zeppelin. At least that’s what Cameron Crowe has said ) two of my favorite bands. I saw it only once at the theater when it was first released but I found it to be OK at best. Perhaps I should give it another viewing to see if my opinion has changed.
Born in 62 ,I grew up with all the classic rock music, its an excellent coming of age film. And indicative of the laid back vibe of the 70s. I feel i could be the music critic young boy. Great soundtrack. One of my all time top 10s
@@nickharris5231 yeah the movie is based on when he went on the road with the Allman Brothers when he was a kid. He might have pulled aspects from other bands (I don't know) but the overall story is based on his experiences on that tour.
This movie sucks so bad. I worked at a music store when this was released in the theater. I worked with someone who constantly played the soundtrack promo we had. I can not stand that fake ass band still water and the shiddy song, ffffeeeeevvvver daaaaawwwg, scratching at my back door.

No, they are labeled correctly. I think there was some DNR usage on the Blu-ray, so you’re seeing some artificial sharpness in some areas.

They’ve done this before. Days of Thunder for example came out in 4k and aParamount Presents release. That Paramount Presents line is confusing.
Do you think the freezing issue is why there is a new release coming in February 2022? Or, is it just that there is now a non-steel book edition?

My 4k dark knight has issues on several players. Sometimes it plays fine sometimes it freezes. Anyone else have issues with that disk?
Great movie, many people may not no this but Jason Lee was a professional skateboarder in California in the 90's.
He was also the voice for 70 cartoon ,Underdog. Also GOT alum Peter Dinklage was the voice of simon bar sinister.

Personal choice. Some people prefer the best picture quality available, even if only marginal so the additional cost is worth it to them.

on release date there's only a $3 difference between the 4k Steelbook and the Paramount Presents Bluray at Bestbuy.

I'll opt for the PP blu-ray, not for the budget, but I prefer the brighter blu-ray release.

I think you're overestimating how much difference The absence of an Atmos mix makes to most people considering purchasing this on 4k.
