Greetings, simply love this vid❤I'm from South Africa and found this extremely useful as it's probably the best all round advice put together 🇿🇦. Also enjoyed the neighbour's few minutes of fame 😊
I had to watch twice before I could pay attention because I was mesmorized by your gorgeous plants!! Such beauty. I loved this video. You are very informative and straightforward in your instruction and demonstration. Other videos I watched confused me and almost discouraged me from trying to grow a bay laurel plant. Your video, however, has inspired me! I hope I can do it😊
Aww how nice of you to say so!! Truth be told they are quite easy to grow! Just be careful not to overwater it and it will be one of the lowest maintenance plants you have!
That was a really great informative video! I love your topiary bay!! Inspired, I hope to grow my baby bay into one just like it. Thanks for your video and knowledge.
Your balcony is absolute beauty!!! Could not imagine it is possible to have on balcony! Thank very much for very informative video. Have you got a video about training your your mug laurel into topiary- I cannot find any on RUclips, please? Good luck with all your plants
Hi, thank you so much for your kind comment, I really appreciate ☺️🙏! Unfortunately I don't have a video about that! I trained it into topiary before I started publishing videos on YT, and don't have another one to show as an example.
This is such a helpful video. Answered all my questions (and its not the first YT vid i watched... just the best). I live in Zone 5a so I have to be particularly attentive to my more tropical container plants. I had a Sweet Bay cutting years ago, but I messed up and the little lovely didn't make it thru winter. 😢 Trying again with a more stronger and supposedly compact variety. This time I intend to succeed! Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge.
Aww that just makes my day to hear that, thank you 💚 I also have a video on how to overwinter potted plants, perhaps some of the tips I shared there could be helpful. Good luck 🌿!
@@17m2garden We have 3 or 4 days in the upper 90s...then back to 101-103 for a few days. My plants are doing great...daily watering for the garden. I have harvest daily...there's a lot we can grow in the heat. Since we regularly see 100-110 in the summer this heatwave hasn't caused me to skip a beat...even at 57.🙂 I enjoy gardening challenges! I'm learning a lot...love to learn. I know the UK is seeing a heatwave this weekend. What about y'all?
Hello Dominika! Thank you for this new video, very educational as always! It gives me an idea to replace my akebia, which definitely doesn't like to be in a pot, I think I don't manage watering it well...(either too much or not enough..🤔.). I'm going to try the laurel, it seems easier 😉 Have a nice evening !
Hi Sophia! I'm really happy that you enjoyed this video! Akebia is very pretty! I have never grown it, so no idea how it performs in pots 🤔. But Laurel is super easy to grow, it's one of those plants that you can leave and go for a two-week vacation and it will still look great when you come back 😅 Wishing you a nice week!
thats so true about potting mix being bad, this year i finally got the hang of preparing my own mixes 😁 i buy bagged humus rich compost, mix with worm castings, vermiculite and fine pumice stone. i wonder if i should add clay for iron?? ive never seen this kind of application in a custom soil mix.
These are some great ingredients 👌! Your plants will definitely appreciate it! Generally you don't need to add worm casting, humus and compost all of that at once, because these are all great sources of organic matter on their own. Clay has very small particles so it has awesome nutrient and water retention, which comes handy, but be careful not too add too much cause then the soil can compact easily. I like to buy good quality potting mix such as Lightmix by Plagron which already has perlite and warm castings in it and then to either mix it with soil when planting trees and shrubs (that's what I used here) or to add compost for extra nutrients and water retention ☺️
Hello! Your bbalcony garden looks fantastic. I just bought a bay seeedling and its leaves are turning brown at the edge. I think I overwatered it. I moved it to a sunnier place and put it in a well draining potting mix in a bigger pot,and watering less frequently. Any advice?
Hi, thank you very much! It's good that you repotted it into a well-draining potting mix and into a larger container. Give it some time to acclimate now. They don't like wet soil, so water well, but let the soil dry out before watering again.
Hi this is great thank you ! I have a new tree that I’ve had for 3 months and recently we had a really hot spell and the leaves have gone a bit brown :( I’ve watered it but I’m nervous it will die ! Any tips ?
Hi! I'm glad this video was helpful to you! When weather conditions are extreme, damage is often inevitable, but take care of your plant and it should recover. Place it somewhere where it will be protected from the afternoon sun and water regularly (but allow the soil to dry out between watering). You can also pinch off damaged leaves. Good luck 🤞.
Hi! nice to see you back with your videos. I see you have a nice japanese mapple tree, could you do a video on these? I think they are fabulous, I have a premature that was given to me, don't think he will make it, so I bought another one, and consider getting another one....
Hi! I was planning to make a video about Japanese maples, but thanks for the idea anyway ☺️! They are addictive aren't they? I would love to have more of them, but the space is limited haha. For now I have two, a red one and a green one, the green one needs to be transplanted, so I'll probably make a video about them in September.
Hi D! I love your topiary bay! In fact inspired by it I got a Laurel bay ( it looked like a topiary when I bought it) but now it has multiple stems! I'd like to train it into topiary but it seems harsh to cut off all the off shoots, they are thriving, just not into the shape I'd like! In fact my topiary olive tree is also growing a tiny off shoot!!
Hi! Thank you! Oh I understand what you mean, with topiaries and standards you need to keep up with pruning to keep them looking neat and this is only for aesthetics and not for the health of the plant... But cutting off all the side shoots and suckers will promote new healthy growth above 🙂🌿
Hey! Yes, some people living in colder climates grow them outdoors in the summer and indoors in the winter (they are hardy to zone 8). You can also grow it indoors all year round as long as you place it in front of a south-facing window for optimal light levels or under a growlight ☺️
I'm so sorry 🫣! It's easy to forget because they never wilt! Yeah, this woman is determined, she will do whatever it takes to control what I do on my balcony 😂
Well done! You grew it into a beautiful tree!
Thank you so much 🌿
Now that’s one healthy bay tree, looks fabulous, as does your wonderfully colourful balcony y.
That's very kind of you, thank you ☺️!
I use a cake spatula to loosen the soil when I repot, makes repotting a breeze
Haha brilliant 👌😅

Long time I wanted to have this plant. I wish I could have even one bay leaves plant.
I definitely recommend you to get it if you have the possibility, of course. It's a really cool plant that is easy to grow!

@@17m2garden Do you have a Video showing how to shape a topiary or a good resource that I would use
Hello there 🤗. Can you please give me some guidance on how to keep it inside? (Near a window?) And bring it out during the summer time?

I managed to kill my bay leaf plant.😕 I forgot to water it and it defoliated.
