Still going through the vid but your frustrations with how Persephone is not allowed to have any real flaws is so on point. I never really realized it but yea, I think taking away her agency and fault in the mortal deaths and trying to make it look like they had it coming by creating a very forced circumstance of them disrespecting her was the jumped shark for me too.
There are also other moments when she interacts with nymphs or other non-god creatures in which they have plenty good reason to dislike or distance themselves from her when she acts in a petty manner towards them but it's treated as her being badass and standing up for herself?

You are hitting every point on the head. I stopped reading Lore Olympus seriously after the third or fourth sleep dive, and like you, I have been having issues with the series since the trial arc. The plot holes; poor character development; everything involving making Cronos a main villain because now we have three main villains with Apollo, Uranus, and Cronos.🙄 (It sucks because I used to fast past every episode but now I dont think its worth it). Everything has just become so shallow. Persephone is ALWAYS the victim and misunderstood and she is never allowed to develop past her cinnamon roll persona unless it is sexy to Hades (like when she released animals in that water nymphs house). I have also noticed a drop in quality for her character designs. They used to be unique and very distinguished even though they has simple colors but now they all have the same body type. For example, Persephone is very petite and big breasted while Aphrodite, Hera,Mynth and Amphitrite were average height and had their own features. Now, all of the wives of the big three (Zues, Poseidon, and Hades) are tiny and big boobed and Mynth, who was tall, skinny and small breasted has big boobs now.
I think the biggest problem with the series is that Rachel only seems to care about Persephone and Hades and she sacrifices the story to always make them look good. All the other characters have their arcs or quirks stripped away so that Persephone can end up being the hero. Zeus, Eros, Poseidon, Hades, these are heavy hitters in the Greek pantheon and Rachel does a lot to make them weak or irrelevant like locking Eros in a dungeon (even though it made more sense for Eros just to kill Cassandra and then have Persophone find her shade in the underworld for questioning); constantly putting Hades (and now Zeus) in some sleep coma deep dive b.s; and simply forgetting Poseidon exists.
I feel like the story was never meant to be this long and I think Rachel is getting burnt out with it. She clearly loves to draw Hades and Persephone so I think she might be better suited for a light slice of life comic with low stakes and snap shots of Hades and Perephones life rather than a serialized comic.
Rachel said on Instagram that she is ending the series in May so I am going to finish the story, but I wont be paying coins for it anymore.

      @koshetz 8 месяцев назад +16

Funnily enough i would rather say that Rachel cares only about Persephone and Hera because after re-reading comic i realised that Hades doesn't actually have a character arc.
His and Minthe relationships ended only because Persephone turned her into plant and Hades not only didn't learnt anything from it he also just acts like Minthe doesn't existed.
Kronos arc was given entirely to S3 Hera and S2 Persephone despite Kronos being teased at first not only as abusive father to Hades but the main person he got insecurities and traumas from.
But yeah overall LO works atrociously bad with it's character and arcs, i agree with your comment. This comic wasn't planned at all!

i think it would have been cool if persephone was a fertility goddess but its her being loved that brings that power out fully. and because she felt stifled by her mother, even tho she loved her, it was still controlling and thats why she didn't know or have full control over them. and its only when she comes into herself and feels true healthy love, she feels safe enough in her head, past all the trauma, to finally become fully powerful.
and her snapping and accessing that power during her vengeful moment could also play into it. like the dark side of love, the loss of her sisters is what brings it out, but in a very unstable way.

The first baffling dare i say bad choice was changing a myth where Hades is her kidnapper and rapist, Demeter is devastated and enraged at the loss but can do nothing about it, always her daughters biggest cheerleader, and Zeus is enabling all of this......and made Hades barely a problem, Apollo present at all let alone her rapist, and Demeter an abusive mother. We can argue about retellings all day. This is not a feminist one though, full stop. Making somebodys canonical abuser not their canonical abuser isnt giving them agency, its making agency unnecessary. Its throwing the actions THEY perform onto other people and calling it feminism. Absolutely nuts anybody ever thought it was a good move.
Being honest about my opinion. I try to be understanding usually but this comic was....wow. most hades/persephone retellings are the same way. A fetishization of a relationship that never was. Greek and Roman myths are so deeply misunderstood and warped by western pop culture. I only have half a grasp on like. 2. Maybe 3. This one and Narcissus and Echo. Working on Achilles and Patroclus. I dont read modern retellings anymore theyre so disappointing. I guess im glad they bring others joy, i just wish anybody gave half a shit about the real stories. AND the cultural context they exist in, bc it gets truly tragic.

I really thought we were going to get resolution for the side characters, have the nymph discrimination be addressed, have the characters redeem themselves... and then it threw all the interesting stuff out the window just to focus on the shallow romance.

It was weird and kinda creepy from the start. Everyone infantilizing Persephone (that is in fact a child, without any knowledge about what consent and relationships are), but at the same time sexualizing her all the time... NOPE.

I agree that hades/persephone's relationship fell flat. I really liked it in the beginning (besides the creepy age gap) but I loved their flirting and banter, that they would just hang around and do stuff for fun. once it did the time skip- it didn't have the same qualities as before and it felt more like perse talking to her therapist than the love of her life. I also feel like the time skip was a cheap way to end all the problems and create the new kronos conflict- we never got to see much of the suffering that happened after zeus' verdict and all the issues such as TGOEM was just like "oh, its ok"

I have so many mixed feelings on Lore Olympus. While I will always love season 1, after season 1, I became mixed. Season 3 is eeeh. I always in some ways relate to this version of Persephone. Especially when she was 19. I definitely see where a lot of people are coming from with the major issues with LO. Persephone should have had more agency as a woman and as a character in this retelling and it doesn't do that good of a job at that. I agree with your issues completely. Have you heard of LORE | REKINDLED!
It is way better written than LO. Things are actually well thought out and the characters feel more human or relatable as well, especially Persephone. She has a lot more agency in this story and doesn't feel too naive and has a backbone and isn't treated like she's the best damn thing ever lol. The art feels more consistent and I love how everyone stands out from each other instead of looking the same. Body shapes, especially. The new additions feel organic as well and the impact of Persephone's wrath. A must read!
As much as I am still a LO fan, Chapter 230 was it for me when wanting to see Demeter get better. I didn't like it and it felt so bitter and mean. Also, yeah....looking closely at Hades again, there are things I can't ignore for what he has done that were questionable.

  • @furihreunsicherheit3624

The first season has a tighter story because Smythe was able to trial run LO online before it got officially licensed. She was able to take time to edit and draft a better manuscript. Once licensed, she was able to really polish her early work and keep focus and scope of the characters more narrow. However, once more and more characters and myths were introduced, Smythe seemed to run into similar problems other authors face when handling a large cast of character. Juggling so many plot lines and characters became more and more haphazardly executed. Instead of letting the story breathe, the episodes seemed to really just hit highlights. Then there were parts that seemed unnecessarily elongated where every movement of a character seemed to be banging on too long to fill out the length of the episode while not accomplishing much narrative drive.
I definitely need to go back and reread it all, waiting for episodes to drop has a lot of the story muddled in my head, but much of what you've mentioned here is similar to how I felt.
I really *hated* the time skip. If felt like a cheap ploy to serve lose ends to character's stories. And as a reader, it was a missed opportunity for Smythe to really twist the knife into the reader's gut and have us beg her to bring Persephone back if we got to see what was happening to everyone who was now forced to live without her.
The wedding was underwhelming. I was really disappointed in Persephone's dress, it just looked so ordinary. It could have been a great opportunity to have Smythe create a Greek inspired wedding dress or something avant-garde.
And the ending felt... like Persephone wasn't even needed? Somehow other side and very minor characters upstaged the female lead? And then it just ends? No epilog chapters? No special bonus chapters? No spin-off side chapters? Nothing??
And then seeing Smythe post some post-LO interview clips just made me more frustrated because, to me, she seemed kinda checked out? Or her answers to questions really weren't satisfactory to me as they came off as off the cuff, similar to how LO unfolded.
I dunno. Again, totally empathize with your frustration with LO. I definitely need to reread and see if what I'm feeling now about the series changes. LO used to be my highlight before starting a work week, but eventually I stopped reading weekly because the story just lost so much luster. Lots to think about.
    Great video! 🎉

Woah. I’ve never read LO (Apollo is my fav god and I hate how he’s written so I can’t lol). But ‘Fertility goddess’ seems so exclusionary. They can only empower men? What if one of them was gay, would they not be able to empower anyone? Can fertility goddesses not be gay? I feel like for such a popular comic, this should’ve been considered, because it’s genuinely terrible.

    • @IceQueen975

In the newest chapter, Hera is also a Fertility Goddess and she kissed Echo (which is vile when you know the actual myth. Out of ALL maybe female LO, you pick the one she abuses and punishes in her actual myth? And in LO, Echo was sent as a spy?? tf???). So it's unclear.

Also, how come Persephone is a fertility goddess but not Demeter even though they have similar powers and myths Demeter is a goddess of growing crops, which are associated with fertility in many ancient cultures?

For me a really wierd thing was how Rachel made Persephone 19 years old and Hades a couple hundred years old...like why? They are both God, thry can be close in age and immortal, so why make this huge age gap for nothing? Made no sense... she's not a mortal and would have been better not to mention their ages at all...

In the past, I got curious when I saw an advertisement of this and went to check it out after finishing a castle swimmer episode when it was new to the WEBTOON platform (CS is a year younger than LO) I got interested but as it progressed, I was getting bored because, IMP, the plot was dragging, seeing the characters & background only one or two colours is just boring, side stories show no screen time, explanation-bla bla bla…. Until it finally ended, I now only read it just to fill the hungry entertainment void while my favourites ,castle swimmer to be specific, is on hiatus.

there are a lot of stories that touch on shallow, surface level issues for women and femininity in society, but when it comes to the author's own unchecked biases about women's positions in relationships and society, and just maybe poor writing skills in general, the themes start to fall apart and the audience becomes frustrated because problems start to become more apparent
