  • Cheat the seasons by creating a micro-climate over your raised garden beds with a Hoop House.
As colder weather approaches, the best way to extend your growing season for fall & winter veggies is to put up a simple PVC Hoop House over your raised garden beds. When you have a Hoop House you have the advantage of:
    • Low cost
    • Portable / mobile
    • Longer growing seasons
Growing with a Hoop House generally allows you to grow a month earlier and to extend your growing a month later.
    Here’s how to do it:
    Equipment needed:
    • Hammer
    • Measuring tape
    Materials needed:
    • Pieces of rebar - 2 foot lengths are good
    • Pieces of ½” PVC piping - cut a 20’ length into 3 even pieces (80” each)
    • Reemay cloth (aka Row Cover) with excess on each edge to hold down with smooth edged posts/boards
    1. Pound in Rebar pieces with a hammer
    • Every 80 to 90 cm (3 feet) pound in rebar down one side of the bed.
    • Angle the pieces slightly inward
    • Put 2/3 of it in the ground and leave 1/3 sticking up
    • On the other side of the bed, 4-5 feet away from the first side, pound in your rebar.
    2. Slide PVC pieces over rebar and bend them to slide over the other side - this creates your structural support.
    3. Cut your Reemay Cover or Clear Poly to have EXTRA on each side of your structure.
    4. Stretch your cover over the PVC pieces
    5. Anchor (hold down) your cover using heavy, smooth edged posts, lumber or pipes.
    happy growing for longer seasons!

How long are your PVC pipes??

      Great question.
At the places where I purchase PVC it's always sold in 20 foot lengths. Cut one of those in 3 equal pieces. That's 80 inches each
When you have an 80" piece it does a perfect arch over a garden bed that's 4 feet to 5 feet wide.
      I hope that helps!
