As a Barnsley lad myself, I'm glad to see you branching out and trying oysters. I like them best with a touch of lemon juice, they have to be freshly shucked with a little sea liquor in the shell. Let them linger in your mouth and chew them slowly to get the full experience. The more you try them, the more your confidence will build. Trust me, I did not eat my first oyster until I turned 55 years old, now I'm a huge fan. Love what you are doing, all the best to you and Barnsley from my home in Canada.

English ex-pat, stuck in Thailand for the last ten years, nearly wept when I saw that fish & chips, the peas, the curry, the gravy...
Yes, of course you can have gravy, especially with beef-dripping cooked _anything,_ I used to have a staple of fishcake* chips & gravy years ago.
*By fishcake, we're talking about proper slices of fish, maybe not big enough to fry as a single fish (multiple offcuts etc) sandwiched between two slices of spud and battered. _Not_ the frozen minced up shyte you pull out of the supermarket freezer.
@MOOSEDOWNUNDER - I'm like you, I'll eat practically anything that comes from the sea, just has to be properly cooked. Love to combine calamari with tzatziki, the freshness really works, and of course to drink with oysters & calamari, a decent chilled white wine.
I used to enjoy a can of dick-dock (dandelion & burdock) with a lunchtime fish & chip outing, and being something of an old soak, I might surprise you in saying that IMO you can't beat a really good cup of tea with a dose of battery goodness. Save the beers for after:-)

Hello Danny, yes I have gravy on my fish if I have it on my chips, but as an Australian 9/10 times I'll go the classic tomato sauce (ketchup, dont know what they call it in England lol), also enjoy tartare or just salt with a bit of lemon. Chips and gravy tends to be a meal on its own, or with a nice roast chicken, but sometimes its too good to pass up.

I tell you Danny every time I watch you eating fish and chips it nearly kills me with hunger and envy, for I am one of those Brits living in the US, and you are right, unless you are frying them in beef dripping then forget it, you just won’t get that taste! I have driven forty or fifty miles here in Texas in the hope of finding the elusive flavor and taste of real fish and chips only to be massively disappointed! On one occasion a Scottish couple had brought all the gear over, the fryers the lot, and when I got there they had a sign saying “we fry all our products in peanut oil” I thought….why did I bother! And I was right, it was…..bloody awful! The good news is that after 18 years we are heading back to Yorkshire for good, and I can’t wait! No more looking at the TV with my wife laughing at me watching you break into massive fish while I drool like a mad zombie!

The other place that did really good fish and chips in Leeds in the 1980s was on Roundhay Road next to Chapeltown. In those days Chapeltown was the red light district and you had to be careful who you spoke to when parking near the chippy!
