  • How to install solar panels on your sailboat! This is an in-depth video on how I installed my 300W solar system.
    I'm not advocating any particular vendor, just using what worked best for me. This keeps up with everything I need electricity-wise on my 38' catamaran "Zingaro".

    Your sailing videos stir the soul, but as a recent boat owner, (Tanzer 28), these 'how to' videos are a necessity for me. I was trying to estimate how many hours of work went into creating these videos ... thanks for your help!

    I never thought about using vise-grips as a third hand. I'm going to have to try that. Also, your wiring is extremely neat and organized - I love the attention to details. I'll keep watching.

    3 years late, but just fyi if wired in a series you risk all the panels not functioning if one gets too much shade or has an issue. It's more annoying to wire parallel, but you'll be glad you did long term.

  • @novoburgo
    @novoburgo 3 года назад +1

    Series connection is much more efficient. Higher voltage results in less cable loss. It also allows the panel to work more efficiently when partially shaded. You can also use a lower gauge cable to connect the panels to your battery (or a longer cable with less loss).

    Oh man you are going to hate those brass grommets next year... I had HQST and switched to PowerFree 135w because they have a glaze on them and SS grommets. The 120w and below at PF are NON-coated. My HQST panel is 6 years old today, kinda yellow but still producing nearly 100w (it's a 100w). That Charge Controller is OVERKILL! Love it!!
    It's not too late to ream out the brass and goto SS.
    Totally agree on the Lineman Pliers. Best there is.

    I could not find the input voltage rating for your charger; if it is equal or above 53.1 VDC, the most efficient connection will be series (it reduces the voltage drop by reducing the current).

    Can you provide some specifics about your electrical generation versus average load? Are you quite comfortable or do you really have to pick and chose when you can run stuff? What kind of electrical devices do you have on board? As an engineer, this stuff is of great interest to me.
    Loving your videos by the way.

    Hi there great channel, and content so tar very much for that. I have a couple of questions, 1. Is there anything you would different looking back? 2. Are the 3 solar panels your only way of generating power and are they enough. I assume you may use quite a bit of power on a 38ft boat! 3. Are there any tips you would give? Happy sailing and thanks

    Serial is better. Because early morning and evening or cloudy days and/or winter time sun is not so much, so voltage will be less than 10V so your charger will not create more than 13.5 volt so you can't charge your batteries. But if you do serial your voltage will be double (x panel qty) so you always have more than 13v at least so you can make charging. Another good thing is you will have less amper so you will use less diameter cable and loose less energy on the way. always prefer more volt and less amps. because in the power base all is same watt = V x A

    Hi James. Great shows(s). Enjoy them all very much.Just a heads up. (you may have already thought of this) if your Boat is on a 12 volt system, hooking up your Solar panels in series is Baaad. 3 x 12v panels in series = 36 volts @ same amps/current. 3 x 12v panels in parallel = 12 volts but 3 x the amps/current. Sorry about the lightning strike that took out your stuff. That sucks.Fair winds, Man.

    To James and anyone else considering a substantial / serious / dependable electrical system on a boat the best videos and information are by Jeff Cote and a must-see. This guy is the master and the authority of the universe (in my opinion) for electrical on boats. The runs a business called Pacific Yacht Systems (marine electronics and electrical).
    www.pysystems.ca
    He really knows his shit. He goes into great detail in his videos / seminars on RUclips and can be downloaded also from the Off Center Harbor website that caters to the Sailing Community on all kinds of subjects from construction, repair, sail making, rigging, electrical- you name it's in there. It is a great website. Members get access to all the videos and a cool hat. I thought the money was well worth the Treasure Trove of information I have gathered. Fairwinds everybody.

    these kinds solar panel only last 6month to 1years or 2years if you clean it well.but the power will lose more after 2years,and not suggest to install them on yacht or boat,because the material are not weatherproof . We are solar manufacture we know the material well.that's we do not produce PET flexible solar panel now.

    connecting 3 x 12v panels in series (36 v) would have blown up your batteries, match the voltage to your system eg 12v system = 12v charger, 24v system = 24 v charger...

    • @thelastpirate
      @thelastpirate  6 лет назад +4

      Actually, with a MPPT controller you can have a much greater Voc (open circuit voltage) input, so series is an option. However parallel is better for shading, as one panel can still output max when one is shaded. I’ve verified this works, and would recommend parallel to anyone for sailboat applications.

    Man, i am a professional car stereo installer. I have been in the industry for 26 years now and i really wish you would have done some math before you choose the 10 gauge wire to run from your batteries to your controller and from battery to battery. You dont know how much more current you get from a bigger wire such as 4 gauge, and then making sure it is Oxygen free copper opposed to Copper Clad or CCA wire. Also, NEVER, and i mean NEVER run such a long run of wire from a battery without a FUSE no futher than 6 inches away from your battery!!! That made me cringe to see no fuse and a huge run of wire!!!!! Just a thought for next time or someone reading this!!!!
