Like turning Siren Head into diet Slenderman, the Backrooms has become bootleg SCP.

A bootleg SCP is not Backrooms, that award goes to RPC which is run by racists and originally made the thing all because of a funny rainbow flag.
Backrooms and SCP only similarity are its website layout and the concept of Entity’s and SCP being pretty similar. Other than that the general world building and concepts of both worlds are not the same thing. Idc if the backrooms doesn’t have its simplicity anymore by adding more shit cause that’s what the SCP Foundation did too.

@@thedillpickleman015 i think what's meant by "bootleg SCP" is 'something that was a cool idea, that got ruined the more people got involved with it' and the Backrooms suffered from this far worse than SCP. Not necessarily that they're the same thing.

I personally wouldn't see Kane Pixels as the starting point, as I'm pretty sure the added on levels and crap were already there, Kane just went down the path of making their own canon, something that's the Backrooms is basically built on; a not agreed canon to the Backrooms, which will throw people around.
Also, for Heavenly, yeah, it was bacteria.

Cos he's matpat an annoying person like minecraft could be better off without a lore dude and now it started the backrooms domino it will be more and more popular on RUclips until it reaches the end of the domino

What I personally like about the Backrooms is the surreality of it all. One moment you're going through a series of yellow hallways, to a place where's there's water everywhere, to a wide open but somehow still enclosed forest, maybe a weird desert or parking garage and then right back to the hallways again. It's weird but in a good way in my opinion.

So. For a small clarification. Kane did bring this back into a spotlight but the...mythos? For a lack of a better word was expanding for a few years after the original creepypasta. Quite a few things today existed back then. Pool room. Party goers. Smile faces. The parking lot. The complex. Etc. My faintest memories I remember there having expanded to either 7 or 12 floors. And a floor 0. The original date of the first creepypasta escapes me but I think the additions would follow for 2 to 3 years after before interest died off

This is something I noticed. In a sense I can understand why adding things to the backrooms, because the sense of nothingness can only go as far. At first I didn't agree with the critics that adding things made it worse, but then I started to realize they were right.
Kane Pixels is the biggest example because it's the most well-produce The Backrooms' related media. It has some well-produced things but what is the point? It had a really really good episode when they finally find something, but the more I read, the more all that production values seem pointless. It was a mistake to make the backrooms so tied with technology, because it's more about the company behind it than the backrooms themselves - like an episode is just them checking things in a screen and that's...really boring and even if they put lore subtletly, there's such a thing as being too subtle.

    • @AverageUsernames
      @AverageUsernames Год назад +7

But I find it more interesting, than backrooms having nothing and an desolate wasteland with nothing in it which I feel weird rather than a forgotten realm of neglected abandoned places.
I think if backrooms was gatekeeped and never actually added an single thing that made it interesting and "unique" like the stupid scp version level game, it would have died off, and we wouldn't get almost realistic backrooms animations.
Kane pixels version is alot better than alot of those backrooms wiki paRtyGoeR, you win level or faceling entity that are human like but not human.
Apart from that I liked original and kane pixels version rather than survival orientated backrooms.

liminal space is a place that your meant to travel through not stick around in for long enough for it to change. such as a hospital at midnight, a school after dark, a bare bones mall, a nightime gas station, a nightime field/farm or an empty city. theres also the complete vacancy of life sets off your instincts that somethings wrong or like your trespassing in a predators domain like when a forest goes queit or your military example. in the backrooms these liminal spaces are inteded to be infinite like the original level so the empty hospital would go on and on with no end for example.

So you can see this lump in the carpet moving towards you, but you don't know what's under there, and maybe the size of the lump in the carpet changes so you don't know if there are multiple things of different sizes, if there is one that can change size, or if there is something very big under there, but only a small portion is brushing up under the carpet, then you can have areas with tears or holes in the carpet to indicate that something may have happened involving whatever it is there.

I feel like the backrooms could have a monster if, and ONLY IF, it never gets the "protagonist"(for a lack of a better term). Like take the figure of the Bacteria right? Have it always be in the corner of the protagonist's eye. No matter how fast they look at it's direction or anything it's always gone. Then it becomes a point where the protagonist is essentially just screaming for whatever is there just kill them and get it over with. Even when they're laying on the ground starving and dying the entity continues to never leave the corner's of their eyes, never getting closer, never acting aggressive just standing there *watching*.

i dont mind adding a few creatures especially the more subtle creatures or people like a few survivors or tiny camps of maybe 5 people cause the idea of wandering alone can grow stale and having a reason not to just rewatch stuff on your phone at a outlet you find would be a good one. the various levels can be neat and adds more to the backrooms than just an endless maze of yellow halls as it keeps it fresh and being able to escape gives a reason for someone to make a story other than the protag getting lost and dying of lack of food or suicide. having some rules for certian levels can addd to the creepinessif its something like dont go out into the dark area or avoid the daytime in the empty village level but some are ridicoulos stuff like Align the 12 Stones of Power on the sacred altar then activate the medallion at the moment of total eclipse.
However with things like multiple factions that now have mining operations and carevans as well as edgy ocs inserted in, its too much even for me. what drew me in was the journey through madness, trying to survive twisted surrondings desperatly hoping to see another person or the 1 person you found wont just diseappear or get dragged away by a creature not scp 2 electric boogaloo.

Here's my two cents. The original story was a great creepy tale, but if the community had kept that up, there would have been really nothing to build off. Now I'm not crazy about getting an origin or anything, but as a long time fan of the SCP foundation, I can accept multiple different canons of the backrooms. In the current age I can tell there are 3 main version, the original, the wiki, and the kane pixels version. Each has ups and down. Original has that best condensed, "What you can't see" kinda horror. The wiki has more eliaberate and strange form of horror made as a collaboration of multiple different writers that we should be encouraging rather than discouraging. The kane pixels version feels like an inbetween point between the two, but more focused on a central story.

The only way one could argue for the other levels, in my opinion, is that maybe the government in all their finite wisdom found a way to harness a way into the back rooms. Maybe like star gate their way in and soon as they started exploring they’d try to make housing or shops into it but failed as whatever was in there didn’t like it.
But then again I’d keep it to only one expanding level where you just stumble into an area where you find the failed housing or failed stores that where attempted to build around the backroom’s geometry and giving off a ‘ruins’ type of vibe.

From what I remember the squelching hallways that we watched throughout the video was originally Level 1(the only one), then became Level 0(basically the tutorial zone to the insanity). Now it's Level 2 and Levels 0-1 don't exist? The fandom for the backrooms has definitely gone out of control.

My understanding of the definition of Liminal Space is "an area that you aren't meant to focus on or spend too much time in, because the whole point behind it is to connect you from Point A to Point B." You don't normally think about the long empty hallway lit by fluorescent bulbs, because it's usually filled with students walking to their next class, and you are one of them. What makes liminal space photos so great is that they take that hallway, strip it of any recognizable landmarks or livelihood, and you're left with a transitional space that connects to nowhere. You HAVE to focus on the hallway because there is nothing else in the image. And then you notice how lifeless and artificial the hallway is, and how odd the architecture appears to be, and oh gods why is there nobody here, where is everybody?
Here's my crazy thought though - I don't think a liminal space strictly needs to be a connection between to points in space. It could also refer to an area stuck between two points *in time*. Let me provide an example to explain: Some time ago, my parents had our basement remodelled. When the construction was done, I set up my computer in the corner of the room, and I realized how... empty and unusual the place was. Certain sections of the basement had a higher or lower ceiling, there was a half-wall that divided the area (we were planning to put a couch in that area so you wouldn't have been able to walk through regardless), the support beams covered in plaster made the wall look like it had cube-ish extrusions for no discernible reason, I couldn't see anything outside the windows except for grey sky and whoever was walking through the front yard... it was unsettling, especially when I was alone, and I could hear my voice echo. Eventually, we set up a home exercise gym down there, plus a shelf where we stored all of our movies, and all of the sudden the area felt more comfortable to be in.
And before anyone says, "oh, you just don't like unfinished rooms," you are wrong. I have stood in the middle of a different in-progress basement where I could see the insulation and the flooring was still concrete, and I felt far more at-home than I did in the freshly-remodelled basement. I think it has something to do with the transparency of the situation. If you can see the insulation and the power tools lying about, you can infer, "This room has nothing to hide. It is clearly unfinished, I can't wait to see what it looks like when it's done." Once everything's covered up and the tools are gone, however, suddenly you feel alone, and the room no longer feels as unashamed about itself as it once did. It _looks_ empty, but until you set up the couch and the TV and the coffee table, it feels _wrong_ somehow.
With the rise in popularity over the Backrooms, Liminal space was launched into internet pop culture. But in the process, people who were exposed to the concept for the first time misinterpreted what liminal space is, using the term to refer to almost any photos of unusual and/or abandoned architecture. And yes, abandoned/decaying water parks and movie theatres are still cool and unsettling to look at, but it doesn't have quite the same vibe.
Alongside that, people missed the point of the Backrooms, and started coming up with monsters and lore that inadvertently made the entire concept less scary. Here's what I think the problem is - Existential horror is a niche kind of horror that kids and teenagers usually aren't exposed to until they're older. Because of this, they don't have any frame of reference to understand why the Backrooms work, and that it doesn't need a monster. That, and also the internet is a cesspool of people that are starved for attention but don't know how to make good content.
Heh, this rant kind of reminds me of a quote I once heard, I think it partially explains the wonder of existential horror:
_“Two possibilities exist: either we are alone in the Universe or we are not. Both are equally terrifying.”_ - Arthur C. Clarke.
Anyways, thanks for reading my wall of text. Here's a cookie.🍪 Have a good day. :)

14:40 I have to disagree with Heavenly there.
First of all, his definition of a non-euclidean space is incorrect, non-euclidean means it does not follow the geometric principles of euclid, which the backrooms to my knowledge actually do (mostly I think).
Secondly, the entire catalyst for the backrooms is a picture of a real, existing liminal space; An empty hotel/office space is just as much from our own world as an empty mall or parking garage.
Personally I dislike the idea of cleanly segmented, categorizable "levels", but I like the Idea of the enviroment gradually transitioning into different kinds of derelict interior architecture, akin to different biomes, as this limited form of varitey gives a better scope of the incomprehensible vastness of the space.

Honestly, if you wanna make levels of the backrooms, I feel like they should be of like... The same concept as the original.
Like, the suburbs one feels like it fits in with the original concept of being in a non-euclidean suburban neighborhood that twists and turns and splits and goes on forever and it all looks the same with the fear being trapped in this place that's familiar and fake at the same time. The same thing with a non-euclidean endless mall and a non-euclidean endless school and a non-euclidean endless hospital. No monsters or jumpscares. Just these places that look familiar but goes on forever and doesn't make sense with no sign of life.
If you wanna add something to enhance the horror, I'd say do what Kabhaal suggested and just put a visual phenomena that amps up the paranoia by having it show up in the corner of your eye. A random passing shadow in the backrooms. A light randomly flickering on in one of the windows of the suburbs. A single janitor cart that keeps showing up in random areas in the mall. Etc.

I don't mean any hate, I have massive respect for the guys, but I'll be honest, The Backrooms was nice, simple, and great right up until the point that Markiplier and JackSepticEye fucking touched it! Every time they touch a decent one-off horror concept it blows the fuck up until it fucking collapses in on itself. Their fanbases are incapable of not ruining everything they interact with. It happened to Slender, to FNAF (although this one was helped along by a creator who had visions far grander than the property he created), then to Sirenhead, and now The Backrooms, once the hype dies down a bit, those two are gonna find another idea best left as a one-off and it's gonna swell like an infected cyst.

Infinite levels of strange and almost real spaces is fine, having almost real things live in those spaces is also fine, being corrupted by those spaces is fine.
Those things don't explain the backrooms, they add to it. I definitely prefer the first ten levels but even then some of the levels are kinda meh. But here's the main reason I want to mention.
What happened was a new formula was discovered, and people wanted to be the 05 counsel of the backrooms. There was a gold rush to be the premier lore keepers of the backrooms and it bloated the setting into something that COULD support an 05 counsel equivalent, the backroom groups like MEG. Where now there's an order to what was supposed to be a disorderly place. Where SCP brings horror in trying to explain the unexplainable, the backrooms should've stayed as the place where YOU are the alien. But it didn't.
That in my opinion is where the backrooms went wrong, not the increasing levels, not the monsters, the spirit of what the backrooms are supposed to be is sullied by the lore keepers who wanted to write SCP but were denied for one reason or another.
But I think that's where we can still fix the backrooms, SCP was always what it was, a set of monsters written in a wiki in a structured manner curated by a select few people. The backrooms aren't, we don't actually need to listen to the lore keepers, since this is the modern day folklore. Beowolf can kill the witch in the lake or her house depending on who you ask, and I think we should treat these lores the same.

Nobody has "ruined" the backrooms, not Kane, not Matpat, and not anyone else. Seriously, all they've done is make things for a concept that they like and apparently that makes them a bunch of worthless tourists that aren't allowed to enjoy the backrooms? I just don't get it.

    • @neonlove5456
      @neonlove5456 11 месяцев назад

It's unregulated, and it doesn't belong to any one person or group. What this means is that the idea will be exploited for money and fame. Imagine if Dantes Inferno was written by the entire population of Florence. It would be unrecognizable, and very unlikely to stand the rest of time. Because the more voices you put into a creative concept, the more diminishing returns there are. This is why movies with more than two writers are usually terrible. Too many conflicting ideas, and the ideas that stay are the ones that will garner the most attention.
So the backrooms themselves: the entities overtook the original concept of isolation and dread. This makes sense if you're making videos because who wants to see nothing but empty yellow rooms? More people are drawn to physical horror than psychological.
But if no one contributed to the backrooms I think that that 4chan post would have stood the test of time. Now it's a trend that will die and be forgotten about.
At least what happened to the backrooms did not happen to SCP where fanfic writers kicked out the original ones and oversaturated it with unnecessary content. The fact that this can happen not only online but in the world of publishing should terrify writers. Though this practice has been around for a while. SCP and the Backrooms are internet examples of this.
Sorry for the long post, I didn't know which angle to tackle your question from.

Why not just do the mature thing and agree to disagree and let them enjoy it with entities and levels while you enjoy it with isolation and dread.

It's not overly convoluted like the way the other backrooms lore has become, with the multiple BS levels, entities, and rules. But, it still has that dread of something chasing you, that the original sorely lacked. Reminds me of Doom level with no enemies. Sure the background is creepy, but whats the fear? Lonliness? They might have completely changed what the Backrooms were supposed to be, but hey, if you just listen to some of these and see the pure creativity of the people that came up with some of them, what's so bad about it? Yes, the Backrooms *were* better back then, but is is really that bad if people want to add something and link it up with someone else's thing? The way I see this, is that these additional levels and entities are purely fanfiction. "What if" scenarios and creepy stories that people tell about the Backrooms. Like tales and folklore. What I am asking is... please accept what people did with this community, even if you're not a big fan of it yourself. After all, this is just a fun story concept!
