It’s not true that planes can’t reverse at all. A lot of planes are actually fitted with features that allow them to reverse. However it is economically unviable and in most cases a safety risk for a pilot to reverse. Thus tugs are used for push backs.

I'm pretty sure most planes are actually able to go in reverse on their own, but they are usually not allowed to do so for safety reasons

Airplanes can move backwards, it’s called reverse thrust. It’s just not safe to do it.

Reverse thrust is just to slow planes down from almost 155miles at landing to 50miles.and can't Reverse planes from stagnant to motion

@@arufai yes they can, it just requires full thrust, C-5 Galaxys, DC-9s, and MD-80s have done it frequently. In fact, on Air Florida flight 90, the pilots of that 737, foolishly, reversed out of the gate.

In the 1980 s eastern airlines started backing out of gates when we went on strike. They started back on the tugs for push backs after blowing out to many windows in the concourses..
If they got clam shells, they can go backwards...

The C-130 is quite good at backing up. just reverse the pitch of the blades, and rev it up a little... As long as you are somewhat gentle, nothing is damaged. get a little aggressive, and stuff breaks big time.
