Terry Cox alternating between the metalophone and drums, John Renbourn and Bert Jansch in magnificent interplay between electric and acoustic folk guitars, Danny Thompson in his melodic fluidity while keeping everything together and... ethereal Jacqui McShee and earthy Jansch's voices... such a magical song, with amazing arrangement in its composition and storytelling. This is a very pivotal Pentangle's moment. Truly remarkable.
You said it. Staggering.
Melding of superbly coordinated but somehow detached musical talents with a beautifully lyrical, other-worldly song, it encapsulates so much of what made Pentangle great, just lovely, Queen Zelda can you imagine…..
At their very best. A gift.
This song is such weird magic. I never fail to be utterly captivated.
This was my youth. They are still around.
Absolutely hooked, great British folk. These roots go back a long way.
I adored Pentangle as a teenager but hadn't listened to them for a long time. A few days ago, went to the utterly amazing Highgate cemetery in London, and there was Bert and Loren Jansch's grave. All the memories flooded back and I've been listening again. Just as wonderful as I remember ♡
Jacqui is one of the greatest female voices ever.
Agreed. A staggering talent.
Along with Sandy Denny - two of the greatest female vocalists the UK has ever produced.
Unsurpassed. As is the creation borne from these amazing humans.
They all make it sound effortless ❤
One of the greatest singers ever in my opinion, regardless of gender
the amount of talent in this band just blows my mind every time
50+ years on, and Jacqui's voice still gives me goose bumps
Timeless enchantment
I’ll go for weeks without listening to Pentangle then something turns up on my timeline and I go on a ‘Pentanglathon’ for days. Only saw them once, in Manchester, autumn 1969. Big regret I never saw them again.
Well, you saw them once.
That was only 55 years ago.
I'm being a bit of an obsessive muso here, but just watch Danny Thompson playing harmonics in the opening of the song. That man can REALLY play!! Its beautiful to watch!
Nobody can sing of courtly love quite like dear Jacqui.
Beautiful woman and voice of an angel. Those eyes...
Pentangle. 55 years later. Still absolutely brilliant .
Didn't skip a beat. And now it's the fresh and dreamy days of Early Spring 🌱 ☁️ 🌞
And this lovely lady's voice matches the season so well.
And I'm in the desert town of Southern California watching the fluffy gray and white clouds drifting and gathering in the distant mountains framed by the powder blue sky.and palm trees dancing in the cool spring breeze. This has stimulated my poetic side.
Probably the most underrated band ever
They weren't underrated!!!!!
One of the best Pentangle songs ever. Danny ' s bass lines are from another world and Jacqui ' s voice is PURE MAGIC. And her looks ... ❤❤😂
They are all good, top playing here ... but Danny Thompson is outstanding!
If "merry old England" wasn't actually like this it jolly well should have been. Shades of...... Jacqui's voice is like a bell. The whole group is a magical combination.
I take great comfort in the fact that there's a wealth of live Pentangle footage on RUclips.
The caliber of this performance is truly ineffable- I am at a complete loss for words. Maybe awestruck. Humbled. Dumbfounded!🤯
Makes the hairs on my neck stand up 😊❤
@@davidjones4291 Goosebumps on top of goosebumps for me.
Immaculate. Exquisite. Elegant.
5 stars.
I’ve always been a fan of Pentagle and hearing it again I get goosebumps over and over again.
My favorite song for over 50 years. I even made it my text tone!
"Pentangle are the five points of light being Bert Jansch, John Renbourn, Jacqui McShee, Danny Thompson and Terry Cox."
That's how religions are born. God knows we have enough Beatles mythology alongside David Bowie and Queen worship.
Omg, 5:59 is magical and a wonderful surprise. It's one of those moments in a song when it grabs you and stops you dead in your tracks from whatever you were doing and reminds you of why you love this song! Brings chills to me.....
"While underneath the spreading oak a knight with white device
Upon a shield of black, and deep in grief and sorrow sings
His unrequited love
"Young noblewoman riding by, pray tell me have you seen
Queen Azelda the fairest maid, in company she rides
For I swear to have revenge."
A thousand days have come and passed, the Lord returns this night
The victor from the bloody wars proven his fearsome might
As ever he would claim
But fate has played its wanton game, the circle come full turn
The magic horn has done its work, cried "Falseness is found out!"
The sorrowed quest is over."
I am so fortunate to have found this group; their music is truly magical. Sending much love from Morocco 💌
That vocal counterpoint close to the end was unexpected and delightful.
Could be coincidence, but the above theme is very similar to ''We be Soldiers Three' - a three-mens' song by Thomas Ravenscroft publ. in 1609. Pentangle created a most brilliant blend of styles which was unique at that era.
@@baroqueman1 🙏
@@baroqueman1 There may well be a connection. I seem to remember that the canon in "Hunting Song" is a late medieval/early renaissance round so exactly the kind of music Ravenscroft included in Deuteromelia. It's not the same tune of course but similar enough they may have the same root.
(For those not familiar with Deuteromelia, it's the second of three early 17th C. collections of popular songs, mainly catches and rounds. Today we would probably call them "folk songs" but that concept didn't really exist back then. The collections were published anonymously but it has never been a secret that it was Thomas Ravenscroft who compiled and published them.
"Hey, ho, nobody home,
Meat nor drink nor money have I none -- "
That is a pretty well-known round. I think the second one I ever learned, with the first being "Row, Row, Row Your Boat."
No, that is no coincidence. Very nice reuse as a bridge, though.
It is also a french lullaby named "Vent frais, vent du matin" which is this same canon.
Magic as this happens only once in a lifetime, no words, really, a lot of worlds, for sure.
Never heard of 'em! But boy was I blown away. I'm being whisked from an overcrowded smelly train to go hunting in a an evergreen forest drinking in clean clear air. shhhh! There is a deer ahead........
As man. Strains from my misspent youth, (according to my mom … !!) I absolutely loved Pentangle. So creative and talented.
Very nice very lovely I was just 3 at the time.
This bass player is OWNING this performance. They are all wonderful, but dayum. Very improvisational but orchestrating on the fly, and confident tone.
One of the best songs of all time, Congratulations to the History of music for such an enduring treasure!
When I hear the lines about the ten kings and queens riding, it makes me think of the scene in Narnia with the family of Pevensie brothers and sisters.
So eine schöne Stimme! Zeitlos schöne Musik, die man immer wieder hören kann!
This is unbelievable. Every performance of Pentangle on RUclips is top notch...but this has clambered to a sun-kissed peak I never even knew existed. All of the band are so on song, absolutely soaring. And, Jacqui...oh, my. And kudos to the absolutely fabulous camera-work and overall production - THIS is how to capture a live band. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
What a gem! Never had the luck to hear Pentangle before.
I envy you, what treasures await you.
There was some LSD circulating in 1969 called pentangle. We did it a few times when we could get it. This music always reminds me of those nights of purple-blue electric patterns moving about the walls.
I can't believe I have never heard of this band untill now. Amazing
Great music, and Jacqui's eyes are.....amazing.
And kudos to the production crew for such tasteful staging, camera work and editing.
True.
One of a kind band. 🎶❤️🙏
A style of their own. I am always amazed when I see Danny Thompson play, I still think he is the one musician who brought out the very best in John Martyn. Lovely to see this old video again.
Hi Robert! Lots of great stuff over on Danny's own channel too if you want to subscribe over there www.youtube.com/@OfficialDannyThompson

Bloody brilliant
One of my faves from Pentangle. This is such a great recording. Thank you for uploading.
Very beautiful....thank you.
Wonderful Just Wonderful
full body chills.

Back in the 60s I learned guitar by listening to Bert’s records (and John Fahey’s) and I still worship the man. This shows why. As the jazz great John Abercrombie said, good music respects tradition and pushes it forward. That’s why it never sounds dated.
Lovely to see someone quote from John Abercrombie
Listening to Fahey and Jansch and trying to learn from that would crush mere mortals. Kudos to you.
On my 10th Birthday! ❤️
The angel's are rejoicing 🎶💕
Woah! Sublime
My early 20s are calling to say that all is not lost.
Great, just great. Each and every note.
Beautiful 😍
WONDERFUL,sounds like THE influence that Ritchi Blackmore drew from. That's a lot of verse from memory!
Perfection!

There was formerly a video on RUclips of this entire show though nowhere near as high in quality as this one track. Hopefully, Pentangle will release the entire show when finished uploading each song individually.
The playlist?
@@maxsonthonax1020 - The original BBC show saved to my RUclips library has since disappeared, however I just found this link in a search which includes most of it. ruclips.net/p/PLOs5fSc0WM77jMU-uxuQ1Qtec-L9Wnf57&si=E2Wsxl5JQ3cg0T99n
Fantastic Music!!! Top!!!
F*cking wonderful... ☝️😎
never heard anything like this
Just subscribed…… where you been all my life 😁
Great story too... Stupid in-breeding kings & queens... love the canon-singing at the end
My go to gal I my teen youth lust
Bring the old edition back!
It has way better sound and montage and a nice intro by Bert Jansch!!!
It's what Blackmore's Night would sound like if Ritchie Blackmore were a beatnik instead of a metalhead.
Im guessing blackmore was influenced by them, led zeppelin definitely were, so deep purple probably also were at least indirectly
A one-off collaboration would be welcome.
I can't work out if they are jazz cats who decided to play some film songs or folkies who were wondering what would be the wildest way to reinvigorate folk.
* Folk songs. Bloody autocorrect.
Take three girls memories
Que de très bons musiciens. Quelqu'un pourrait-il me donner le nom du contrebassiste ?
C'est Danny Thompson je crois
@@mymylaj478
Danny Thompson: basse.
Terry Cox: percussions, chant.
jaqui Mc Shee: chant.
John Renbourn: guitares, chant.
Bert Jansch: guitares, chant.
Lu beaucoup de commentaires sur le son de la contrebasse de D Thompson, elle sonne du feu de Dieu, ça ronfle, ça grince, j'aurais aimé en avoir une comme ça.
Read a lot of comments about the sound of D Thompson's double bass, it sounds incredibly, it hums, it creaks, I wish I had one like that.
Is this a modern composition or is it traditional?
I thought this was a traditional tune, some child ballad or satirical tune or similar. But it seems to be written by the band. Who is Queen Azelda?
Why add boarders
Why take out the introduction by Bert at the start so peculiar.
I know this song from the Dutch band Galaxy-Lin. Never knew it was from Pentangle. I like the Galaxy-Lin version more though. ruclips.net/video/NAPxwJ2MNcg/видео.html
Absolutely amazing
She reminds me of Brittany Mahomes.
Why take down the 1.6m one your never going to gets those views accumulated over 16 years
As my grandmother would say, bombaclart
'Promosm' 😴
As I did travel all on a journey
Over the wayside and under a dark moon
Hanging above a mountain
I spied a young man riding a fine horse
Chasing a white hart and all through the woodland
Head of a hunting party
And there followed after ten kings and queens
Laughing and joking, the white hart they'd seen
Bloodied running into the bushes
I plume to his helmet, a quiver and a bow
There's nowhere to run now, there's no place to go
The hunt is cast and ready
Still farther I journeyed through the hills and the valleys
Until upon the verge of despair I sat and rested
And there did pass a princely knight poursuite [pursued] by a lady
And this she did say:
"Oh may I ask you kind sir where you are going?
And pray tell unto me sir why you do hurry
Strange that I should meet you here, come sit by me".
"I have here a magic horn to deliver
And one drop from this silver and gold horn I hold, sir
Shall prove all to be false, lovers beware!"
"The gift that you bear for your brother the king
I gladly would carry to the banquet this even'
What fair sport this would be for the maidens at court."
Wearily I crossed the stream to the castle
Where I found shelter from the cold wintry wind
And food did I have and plenty
But the Lord and Lady seemed so sad
For these words they did say unto each other:
"My good lord, all off to war in thy armor
Leaving me here alone to weep and to worry
Take care lest misadventure
Shall overcome thy kindly heart
My good lord, all off to war in thy armor."
"My lady, you have no need for to worry
I'll return victorious and true unto thee
Take care, lest misadventure
Shall stain your heart and lead to woe
My fair lady you have no need for to worry."
. . . la la la . . .
While underneath the spreading oak a knight with white device
Upon a shield of black, and deep in grief and sorrow sings
His unrequited love
"Young noblewoman riding by, pray tell me have you seen
Queen Azelda the fairest maid, in company she rides
For I swear to have revenge."
A thousand days have come and passed, the Lord returns this night
The victor from the bloody wars proven his fearsome might
As ever he would claim
But fate has played its wanton game, the circle come full turn
The magic horn has done its work, cried "Falseness is found out!"
The sorrowed quest is over.
Going 50 Years back to find SUCH -
BAD - very bad
