Sepultura actually already started in 1984 in Brazil (yes, they're all from there), back then as a thrash metal band. Their early albums Beneath The Remains (1989), Arise (1991) and Chaos A.D. (1993) were all great, you should check out songs like Dead Embryonic Cells, Inner Self, Kaiowas, Territory or Refuse / Resist to get a glimpse of how good they were in those days. The album Roots (of which this here is the title track, released in 1996) marked a change in style for them since they implemented brazilian rhythms and drums into their music which made them become quite unique in the metal landscape at that time. The album became their greatest success and was even listed by the Rolling Stone magazine in their 2004 list of the 500 best albums of all time (one of a few real metal album in that list at that time). Max Cavallera left the band in the same year though because of the band not willing to renew their manager's contract (who actually was Gloria Cavalera, Max' wife). Max formed Soulfly a year later.
They actually started out as Death Metal, then shifted to Thrash with Beneath, then shifted to Groove Metal with Chaos; not that that's a bad thing. Beneath the Remains and Arise are my favs!
Dead Embryonic Cells was my intro to Sepultura way back on Headbangers Ball late one night and I was hooked! I think the only other band I latched onto so quickly even though a different rock genre is Kyuss when I saw “Green Machine!”
FINALLY, from my country! :D Btw, Soulfly came to be after Max Cavalera (the lead singer in this song/video) left the band. It's all a mess, but actually he left cuz his wife was their manager and the rest of the band was not cool with that anymore. He formed Soulfly and after sometime Igor Cavalera (the drummer and Max's brother) left Sepultura and went on to Soulfy, and after that they also made a side project called Cavalera Conspiracy. EDIT: That's not Krav Maga, that's Capoeira. EDIT2: About the race stuff..... That's a pickle.... In Brazil, we're actually a mixed race. Me, being white as a paper sheet, do have black ancestors. Actually my grandfather's grandfathers were slaves. And it's most usual things goin like that. Max and Igor, with the surname CAVALERA, actually come from italian descent, they met the other guys in Sepultura living in Belo Horizonte City, capital of the state of Minas Gerais (Central/Southeast Brazil). BTW, after Max left, Sepultura got Derrick Greene, which is a 7ft tall black man that screams like he has a truck motor in his throat.
This band is special. I'm not as into the newer version, not that they're bad either. Igor and Max are magic. For me, I really feel the latin groove stuff on Soulfly and also the tribal beats and syncopated heaviness of Sepultura. Chaos AD is perfection IMO. That album is also super relevant.
@@NYC_Goody they continued with another lead vocalist after max left. They've dropped more albums than with the original line up but it's still not the same
Same here, But I must admit I never really gave The"New" Sepultura a fair Chance...Recently saw a video with their current drummer Eloy Casagrande ..Must admit Hes one of a kind (Hurts to say)
Brasil is one of the countries with more diversity in every way, including ethnicity. There's Japanese population, Italian, African, German, Portuguese, of course many native cultures like the Xavantes, other Latin American immigrants specially from Paraguay and the list goes on.
Sepulutura is amazing! The martial arts being practiced throughout the video here is Capoeira. It is a Brazilian martial art that combines elements of dance, acrobatics, and music. It was first practiced by enslaved Africans in Brazil at the beginning of the 16th century. They did this to keep practicing warfare in full view of their European captors in disguse. Very ingenious and it is still alive today. There is a studio just outside Detroit I've failed miserably at trying to learn the basics 😅
The quote at the beginning of the song is from Chinua Achebe, who was a writer from Nigeria. His most famous work was the novel Things Fall Apart. It was an indictment against colonialism and a reaction to Joseph Conrad's book Heart of Darkness. "Roots, Bloody Roots" is an indictment against colonialism in Brazil.
I love this band. I obsessed about them for years, starting about 1994. One of the best live bands I've ever seen. They started in the mid 80s when they were just teenagers. One could argue that these guys were one of the primary influences that began nu metal. Please react to Dead Embryonic Cells, Refuse/Resist, Desperate Cry, Territory, or Attitude.
Shout-out the Deftones shirt, you mean? 😂 Yep, he was a huge fan of Deftones in 1996 already. Their debut Adrenaline and Korn's self-titled inspired Sepultura to do Roots. Deftones at the time had unofficial Deftones/Dickies shirts. But I'm sure they sold some during shows or something because people had them back then. But they only ever admitted to going to a store to have them made for themselves. I dunno. I bought one on eBay, good quality. What's dope is they definitely collaborated with Dickies years later.
Love Sepultura! They are globally recognized and admired. I wore a Sepultura shirt in Bali, years ago, and got a bunch of nods and grins. Amazing band!
If you're doing Sepultura, consider "Territory" or "Refuse/Resist". If you're doing Soulfly, check out "No Hope=No Fear", "Fire", Tribe", and "No" from the self titled album.
SEPULTURA is very special for us Brazilians. It's a band that defends indigenous rights here in South America. Apart from the tracks recorded directly with some tribes in Brazil.
Max always does live streams on fb playing through with his songs He does Sepultura, Nailbomb, Soulfly and Cavalera Conspiracy and lives in Arizona now His sons have their own bands and do perform with him in Soulfly as well Sons Zyon and Iggor play in Lody Kong and his stepson Richie fronts Incite but they all jump in with each other at times and Zyon also plays drums in Soulfly since 2012
Sepultura is Just Like Pantera They're both groove metal and they also do some thrash liek slayer exoudus but now Frontman Max Cavalera Left the Band in '96 and Formed Soulfly and Also Cavalera Conspiracy Both bands Have Nu Metal and Groove Metal Fill to it!!
Other great song is Attitude, and has an official clip, and it’s from the album Roots too! Another great music from this album is Lookaway, this song has participation from Jonathan Davis form Korn, Mike Patton from Faith no More and Dj Lethal from Limp Bizkit! Another great song is called Pain from Soulfly with participation of Chino Moreno from Deftones. Ps.: Now the oldest classic is called ARISE! This is the clip That has the Christ in the begging.
Yes, they're all Brazilian. They were originally a Thrash Metal band, but changed their sound to a more New Metal one for this particular album. You guys should react to Godflesh - "I, Me, Mine" next
Bros, you will encounter the most amazing love from Sep fans. Follow up on this band and all of Max's projects. As far as Numetal connection to sepultura, all the Numetal bands listened to sepultura as influences. #BiotechIsGodzilla
Maybe the confusion is coming from the Alien Weaponry band that you guys did like a year ago? I'm still kinda new to the channel and I just recently watch that reaction the other day for the first time. And in my opinion the singer from Alien Weaponry sounds like a young Max Cavalera.
I think this is definitely a good introduction for you guys for Sepultura! Although in my opinion, whilst Roots has some of their most diverse and eclectic instrumentation which I could happily listen to songs like Ratamahatta all day long, a fair amount of the album was merely but okay. I would say that their definitive album is Chaos Ad with songs like Refuse / Resist, Amen, Territory, and also an amazing cover of The Hunt by New Model Army! So I would delve deeper in to this album for sure :) Of course never forget the immaculate greatness that is Arise - them at their most death metal! And also albums like Beneath The Remains, Schizophrenia, etc.
You know I agree with Hollywood and I feel like you guys did a reaction to this song. And I remember commenting the same suggestion that I did a little below for another song.
Saw Sepultura live in Phoenix, Az at the first Ozzfest tour in 1996. They where amazing. I still remember the insane drumming. At the time I didn't know they where living in Phoenix. Them and Slayer where the best bands there.
This is closer to the soulfly era than their early shit. They were called south american Slayer. You need to check out Troops of Doom, Desperate Cry, even Chaos AD stuff. Max also did Nailbomb with their monster song Sick Life. But Desperate Cry dammit
From what I remember Max was pretty messed up at the time he left his brother and rest of the band in Sepultura to start Soulfly, wanting to go in a more spiritual and tribal direction with his music while the rest of Sepultura wanted to go back to their original harder and heavier sound after placating Max with the previous album. Refuse/Resist is a classic Sepultura sound while Rattamahatta was more the direction Max wanted to head...can't go wrong with either song IMO. I think if Max could go back in time, he would probably do a Maynard and just have seperate bands with differing creative outlets, and perform with both bands. But that wasn't the done thing back then...if you wanted to play in another band too you were out, a-la Jason Newstead and Metallica.
Hello from New England...Sepultura is a great band.....Max the singer/guitarist and the drummer are brothers...Just like GOJIRA who say Sepultura was a major influence on them...They've influenced tons of bands over the last 30 yrs..Peace from the Northeast..

I swear me and my wife both said when we saw the video title "didn't they already do this song" and I went back and found nothing it tripped us both out!!!🤯😨
@@kotycassidy6955 THEY DID!!! I remember so extremely clearly that they did this already! I'm thinking that video got deleted somehow and now one knew about it or something.
Refuse/Resist, Arise, Beneath The Remains, Inner Self, Nomad, We Who Are Not As Others, Ratamahatta. Just a few suggestions of great Sepultura songs for you!
The quote at the beginning of the video is from the Nigerian writer Chinua Achebe. Chinua was a prominent and influential figure who is best know for his novel, Things Fall Apart. Love Sepultura, and this song is one of my favs. Gotta think Gojira's Amazonia was inspired by this song. Thanks for another enjoyable reaction and fun banter.
Refuse/Resist or Territory from the Chaos AD album are awesome. Chaos AD was the bridge between the Thrash origins of Sepultura and their later groove/nu metal sound. Chaos AD & Roots were massive influences on me, growing up. I saw Soulfly in '98, also amazing.
As much as I LOVE ROOTS BLOODY ROOTS and am really grateful for the reaction, we need to get to some OLD Sepultura. For me, the Sepultura Trifecta are these three albums: Beneath The Remains. Dana his stepson who had a big influence in the album "Roots". Attitude was written by Dana, and you can hear Max's pain and suffering through his vocals and lyrics in roots and soulfly first LP.
That was actually my favorite album from them. Check out the browning carnage featuring Jake Hill, it's a one of a kind band. You can't decide to headbang or get up and dance. Metal with edm and rap.
This type of martial art is called Capoeira, it was created by Africans at the time of slavery in Brazil and became one of the greatest fighting styles in the world based on the city of Salvador, which is where I even live.
You guys have done soulfly which is mostly in the style of this Era of Sepultura... probably why you remember this video, their styles are very similar.
I still remember the first time I heard this song when I was in 4th grade, growing up in S America. Love this song from these Brazilian metalheads. Also like Smokey said, the Calavera Brothers (particularly Max) were extremely influential, went on to make Soulfly and Calavera Conspiracy.
Max & Iggor Cavalera formed Sepultura in 1984, they were born in Brazil but their father was Italian, a member of Brazil's Italian consulate and their mother is Brazilian
Just for your own pleasure, you should check the same song, live, with Tambours du Bronx ( live in Rio), but maybe not on your reaction channel, to react twice for the same song And react to one of their last track "Guardians of Earth", which is about the Amazonia ( Sepultura is from Brazil)
Sepultura started with a more death/black metal (Bestial Devastation and Morbid Vision albums) sound before transitioned into thrash metal (starting from Schizophrenia album) exclusively, During Chaos AD album they started incorporating some tribal elements, but only the the follow up album Roots they experimented more into the tribal music and more groovy sound that people associate with nu-metal.
The vocalist Max Cavalera (founding member of Sepultura. Fun fact: there are now no longer any OG members left in Sepultura) left after this album to form Soulfly whose debut album dropped in 98/99? I can’t remember lol. Max left after internal band arguments over management and payments. Max’s wife Gloria was Sepulturas manager at the time. This album called Roots and dropped in 96 was produced by Ross Robinson who also produced Korns debut and is considered the go to nu metal producer of the era. Max liked the sound of the Korn album and wanted to do something different than the groove metal vibe they had on their last album Chaos A.D. which came out in 93. This album is considered a nu metal classic and is in a lot of all time metal lists. Max also plays this song regularly in Soulfly live sets to this day even though it’s a Sepultura song. He did write it after all lol
I had one of thier first cassette's called Schizophrenia it was crazy...different than anything else at the time and it was fast so I was hooked! This album Roots had such a different sound at the time as well, lots of tribal sounds it was cool 😎 👌
They made the whole Roots album after living with a native indian tribe for iirc 3 months, to get in that special mood the album have. Love from Denmark
It is not "krav maga" it is "capoeira".
They said that in the video.
Rappers are ignorant AF 😂

I still remember the first time I heard this song when I was in 4th grade, growing up in S America. Love this song from these Brazilian metalheads.
Also like Smokey said, the Calavera Brothers (particularly Max) were extremely influential, went on to make Soulfly and Calavera Conspiracy.
Max & Iggor Cavalera formed Sepultura in 1984, they were born in Brazil but their father was Italian, a member of Brazil's Italian consulate and their mother is Brazilian
Sepultera is lit 🔥🔥🔥, I love the screaming 😱
My second favorite thrash band, after Body Count. This is the sickest groove in all of Metal...
More Sepultura guys, awesome band!!! Territory, Propaganda, Refuse/Resist, Ratamahatta, Dead Embrionic Cells, Mine (with Mike Patton)
Just for your own pleasure, you should check the same song, live, with Tambours du Bronx ( live in Rio), but maybe not on your reaction channel, to react twice for the same song
And react to one of their last track "Guardians of Earth", which is about the Amazonia ( Sepultura is from Brazil)
Oh and I'm loving the new intro.
The First (Brazilian) Metal Band which used traditional Native Instruments in their Songs.Sepultura was formed in 1984....
Wow... Sepultura reactions... Fking amazing... That is my favourite trash metal band by that time...
I had one of thier first cassette's called Schizophrenia it was crazy...different than anything else at the time and it was fast so I was hooked! This album Roots had such a different sound at the time as well, lots of tribal sounds it was cool 😎 👌
I love you guys… your reaction videos are the best 🤘🏻
Big fans of Morbid Angel. I'm just saying, you haven't done anything by Morbid Angel yet.
My favorite thrash metal group of all time.
Hollywood are you thinking of the video for Seasons in the Abyss… or Holy Wars, maybe?
You need to react to Sepultura - Scape to the Void from the Live in Barcelona gig
Simply and probably one of the best metal concert
PAAAALEASE CHECK OUT CAVALERA CONSPIRACY, troops of doom with igor jr on drums, its feckin awesom!!!

Was it "prophecy" by soulfly that you guys did that is so familiar? Maybe I'm wrong
They made the whole Roots album after living with a native indian tribe for iirc 3 months, to get in that special mood the album have. Love from Denmark
