"lightly regarded league" man when they hired Greg Marshall the MVC was coming off multiple tournaments where they sent multiple teams. I'm a Creighton fan and I remember seeing 3-4 bid seasons with some people speculating even 5 teams one year making it in. 2006 alone saw 4 teams get invited to the NCAA tournament with 2 making the sweet 16. They went an entire decade 1998-2008 where they sent MORE than one team to the big dance every year. The MVC was never more highly regarded in their life.
As someone who worked in the WSU Athletic Department during thses times, this is very sad to see. Those were some great days for WSU athletics as a whole, we dominated the MVC is all sports, not just basketball. Some of the best days of my career were there during that run from 2013-2018
Wichita State was a very good program in the late 70's and early 80's...they were ranked #1 in season a few times during the Antoine Carr /Cliff Levingston years
ECU fan here. Wichita State was awesome during some of the best years of college basketball imo. NIL has changed basketball so much in just a couple of years. Who knows how the sport will look on this level in 10 years
Depressed Ginger I need you to go back and re-review the MVC back in the 00’s and 10’s. It wasn’t some scrub conference you’re making it out to be. It was an absolute blood bath. Everyone respected the MVC in those days
As an Illinois State alum, it was always a great time going to watch Wichita State from 2013-2017! It was only right to hate them because they were the rivals but I respected their squad!
Their 2014 loss to Kentucky is right there with 2005 Illinois-UNC, 2008 Memphis-Kansas, 2010 Butler-Duke, and 2015 Wisconsin-Duke in terms of games everyone wishes went the other way.
I always loved their name Shockers. The mascot looks neat and I just had to look up and learn the back story about it years ago when they were playing so well.
They left the MVC and they fired Greg Marshall. The Marshall firing is the main reason they’ve fallen off, it’s pretty plain and simple to understand when a college program loses its leader/architect, they’re going to change…
The committee loves to screw with small teams who have good Years. They have two tactics that they use. They will put them with another very good small school so that one of them gets Taken Out or they give them a tough draw with a established program. Usually they like to group all the sleeper teams in one region so that only one can come out.
Sometimes a coach just has the correct formula to win in a place - whether it be Marshall at Wichita, Chaney at Temple, Sampson at Houston, Stevens at Butler, Carlesimo at Seton Hall, etc. They succeed wildly in a place where no one else has been able to match their results.
Their mistake was leaving the MVC. That conference has evolved into one of the most underrated conferences (like, you can make an argument comparing it to the A10 at this point) for the AAC where it's just too far above their head. Too low population of a state to handle three legitimate powerhouses at state schools
I agree...had they'd stayed in the MVC they'd be a little bit more competitive especially with these mid major conferences changes it kinda takes away from building a great conference...just like BYU going to the Big 12..if they woulda stayed in the WCC they'd be the best school in that conference
The downfall was cuz we had an incompetent AD that had no idea what he was doing and fired Marshall and hired a third tier assistant (that was so unqualified) for that job and set the program back 5 years
With the NIL Wichita State will not be able to keep their best players year after year. We are now a farm team to the bigger schools. So sad. In the early eighties and under Gregg Marshall we blew the roof off of that building. Unbelievably loud. Don’t think I will ever get to see this again.
I won a pile of money in the tourney that year Wichita St was 32-0. Their bracket was insane with underseeded UK the 8 seed, prime Pitino Louisville the 4, and Michigan the 2 when they were rolling. I took UK to get to the finals in a big money tourney pool of like 500 entries and they actually made it with a couple of late 3s in a tourney full of upsets. No one in the pool had the team that beat UK to win it, UCONN. So i won first prize. Probably lost all that money back since then. Cool story bro😂.
My bracket pools always let you have 3 brackets and as the son of a UCONN alum and someone who grew up in CT, I was the only one insane enough to pick the 7 seed to win, but I have to do one every year with them winning
But where the Rockets are at, I don't think Van Fleet is washed but in my city, its either they barely get in the postseason but battling in the play in tournament or tank, but its due to having the Nets' pick from the Harden trade not long ago & also having OKC's pick as well, but in the NBA the issue is even being a little under .500 isn't good enough to make moves to get Top 5 players in a draft
I remember when Wichita State upset Dayton in the NCAA tournament in 2017. Shame to see them have a collapse in recent years, but it doesn't suprise me.
I like the new coach will take time to build. Loved those ron baker years. Hes the reason im still a fan. Also if GM wasn't a total lunatic he'd pry be winning games for us still!
side note: I don't expect anyone to play Cal Poly in the tournament because they've been so bad for so long now. i know it was just a small bit but just sad to see their A.D just not care about the program
During their peak years they tested the refs to see if they’d be willing to foul out every single player… that was part of their success/ strategy, and it was ugly.
This was a great video! I remember as a kid being "shocked" at how good witicha state was. Also I don't think it's fair to call vanvleet washed he stills puts up decent numbers
“Lightly regarded league” yea okay 😂 the Missouri Valley had four teams in the NCAA Tournament in 2006 and arguably should have had six. The MVC may have been the best conference outside of the power conferences.
So when teams like Louisville get their championship vacated, was the entire tournament that year a waist of time and money? Did the runner-up claim it that year, or is there not one?
Averaging 17-6-4 for five straight seasons is “basically washed” for an NBA player? 😭 FVV was an All Star two years ago and isn’t even 30 yet. Great video though
TheIR basketball and baseball program got them in the AAC. They have not lived up to the expectations. I happen to be a big a a c fan and i'm disappointed On how they have performed. I like them though and there is hope. But we were expecting a little more

This right here. MVC consistently gives the best underdogs come MM.
The guy who made this video has no clue what he’s talking about. He’s probably 25, can’t be too harsh. But the MVC was a bloodbath in the 2000’s

Agreed, seemed like a missed opportunity not getting the full WSU Basketball history.

Absolutely
Their mascot creeps me out. Seriously, when they were popular, I had nightmares about that wheat shock guy.
The 2014 UK-WSU game was the best game in that tourney. The last 10 minutes was insane with both teams throwing multiple haymakers at each other.
Which never should have taken place in the second round.
Saying the MVC was lightly regarded and that pronunciation of la salle told me everything I needed to know
As an Illinois State alum, it was always a great time going to watch Wichita State from 2013-2017! It was only right to hate them because they were the rivals but I respected their squad!

Fred Van-Vleet is averaging 16 & 8 with the Rockets that's far from being washed
