Finding Old Mines - Tricks of the Trade

- Many old mines exist in the Rocky Mountain West. The old time prospectors filed claims all over the mountains and deserts. Some of these old mines are played out, but others still hold great wealth.
In this video I use the example of finding old "dug outs", which was slang for a miners cabin/shelter. When you find these old structures hidden deep in the mountains, you know their mine and/or placer claim is close by. These guys liked to live close to their claim, so they could keep a close eye on it and keep out claim jumpers.

Love your video's I am a part time prospector and Miner You're intro or heading said Tricks of the Trade! But what you filmed are obvious things you would do! I'm not being rude but you have to know the areas you, I or anyone else knows you have to spend time researching where past mining has taken place. I honestly know how I find old mines or workings of a mine or mines are! But I have taken a very early retirement to concentrate my efforts to claim an old mine or just find a good location to stake a claim. I'm sure you know you don't just go wondering around the mountains without some research to see old mining activity or being told about mining area's. I found one up Rhoads canyon and the Blind stream area.I went down 1 but the other one has a wood door covering it with old thick leather straps used as hinges. I was hunting and didn't have my gear to go down into it. Love your video's even though I just found your channel, God Bless

Thank you Jordan. I wanted to do something a little different besides just talking non-stop like every other channel of this genre. Some people don't like music and want talking only, but I've found most people appreciate the music and want me to keep doing it.
I've tried mixing it up a bit and doing some talking, but still staying true to the original videos and keeping the music. I try to find different music created by unknown artist. This way it helps promote their work.

Awesome. Glad you enjoyed it. I had to quit using so much music in the videos because of copy right issues. One of my videos got banned for 6 months. Crazy stuff. The free music sucks.
Love the old building thanks
Glad to meet another person who appreciates the old buildings as much as I do. I think the old building was where the miners lived who were working some old company mines in the area. Next to that old building I found other old structures and about 4 or 5 old mines (not the mine featured in this video, that mine was found way up on the mountain). I think they were mining copper and gold.

My honest opinion is it is time for US Forest service to go bye bye. Along with all the crooked politicians as well. They create the havic and problems we all are facing these days. Time to regulate them just as they try to regulate us. 😡

Opening spot looks like White Spar Mine
I've never heard of White Spar Mine. Most of the mines I document are in very remote locations and require hiking up unmarked trails.

It is very frustrating, they also destroyed many old miners cabins on wilderness land. The best thing you can do is keep these places secret, this helps ensure they never get destroyed.
I’ll tell you all a trick of the trade that everyone has heard but never truly understood what it meant. The saying goes “ if you follow the rainbow you’ll come to a pot of gold” this is true but people think of the wrong rainbow. The true rainbow is to be found in the rock. If you follow the colours you’ll find valuable minerals like gold!!!!! TRUE FACT!
could a person open the mines back up
Hi James. Good question. Theoretically yes, just as long as nobody already has a claim on the old mine. It's a very risky endeavor and that's why I jokingly refer to the mine as "leaver-ite" in the video.
Unlike the Old Time Prospectors, we have to deal with permitting, State and Federal EPA and God forbid you have even one employee; OSHA. Almost all the mines you see in my videos are very remote and hidden, I found this one exploring a deer/elk trail way up a canyon. There are no roads around or anything like that to get the ore out and sent off to a mill.
Many of these old mines are very structurally unsound and would need to be made safe again before proceeding with any mining activities. If you ever found an old mine that produced high grade gold ore, it would be worth your time to clear it out and shore up the mine. If it was Silver or anything like that, it would probably be a waste of time.
If you ever did open up one of these old mines the best route would be to do it for fun and make it a weekend hobby for creating a little side income for the family. Any large scale mining activity would cost millions of dollars up front in environmental impact surveys, road construction, insurance and clean-up activities.
