    I've just had quick look at your website and wow, you sure do have an impressive set of equipment and test tapes etc. for fully calibrating every aspect of a cassette deck. I just wish you were based near me in the U.K, so I could get you to service my deck.

    It is not the same if you put mecha vertical or horizontal for testing....if you test on horizontal position drums are locked on own weight....in vertical position drums have free working condition with some +/- degree of sliding...in my opinion...i repeat "my opinion" final settings may be on vertical normal working position....for drums innacuracy and sliding Pioneer in later models put mechas on Slant Position of ? degrees.....

      For the tape guides (height) it does not matter - there are fixing springs. The only difference may cause for the back tension measurement. I checked the guides position on horizontal and vertical and it is the same.

      btw i forget to add....if you set or calibrate mecha in horisontal position in some cases when you install mecha in normal position to the deck in some situations mecha may vork misanligment play/pause/play or stop/play etc....I dont want to be a smart ass sorry....i always pay attention to little details after big cassette deck collection in 90s and servicing him alone.

      As I said, for the 965 mecha the position does not matter. I checked also the phase of the playback azimuth ant it remains constant. It is indication for a stable parts position. And of course, there are some mechanisms that are quite sensitive to their positions.

    Hi, dear Boris! Tnanks for awesome video! Well, my question would be quite straightforward I suppose: would Rs-b965 transport accept a rec/play head assy with a RIGHT-handed tape guide. As we see, originally its LEFT-side guide assy, and yet, is it still possible to interchange them? Just got me a good amorphous right-guided combi head which I'd like to install instead of the worn out original soft permalloy head in my rs-b965. And yes, I guess, that would lead to some additional fine tuning of play/rec amp EQ, alas!! Thanks for any input, regards, as ever!))

    Awesome work
    I have seen you on eBay selling decks. I would deffo buy from you!
    The metal alignment tool you have is very cool!
    I had to align my 965 with a cheap clear cassette with the front cut off, like you did in the second part of my video

    What is there to adjust for tape path tune?

    • @PAFT-Audio
      @PAFT-Audio  7 лет назад +1

      Many things - the height of the guides of left pinch roller near the take supply capstan. The height of the guides of the head, the angle (perpendicularity) of the head; the height of the right tape guide near the right (take up) capstan. There a at least 5 screws to do that. That prevents the tape from crush especially for thin tapes (

      Are you using a calibration tool for the adjustment?

    • @PAFT-Audio
      @PAFT-Audio  7 лет назад

      You can see from the first part of the video that I use M-300 panel, which is the calibration tool for the mechanism. For the tape tension I use original measurement tension tapes. For the azimuth and electrical parameters I use also original test tapes. You can find more information about the test tools in my lab at the following link: lab2104.tu-plovdiv.bg/index.php/2015/12/08/equipment/

    The quality of the video recording is terrible, first learn it and then add some video on youtube ..

      Anyone who does not like them can simply stop watching. If I invest for a pro video recording equipment then the videos would not be free of charge.

    A cassette with the entire half removed (or cut out) is a nice educational tool to demonstrate how tape path works to students. It is it also useful for tuning the erase head position. But that's where its usability ends. Such cassette produces absolutely non-representative and misleading picture of the actual tape path alignment. One cannot use such a cassette to verify alignment of the tape path, period. What you see with "half-cassette" can (and will!) easily be very very very different from the tape path that a regular intact cassette will produce. Sorry, but cassettes shown in the video do not make sense as tape path testers.
    If you want to test your tape path with a cassette, you need a mirror cassette, which (most importantly!) shall have all tape supporting parts still intact. I.e. it has to have a narrow window for a mirror, but otherwise lateral parts of the cassette case absolutely have to be intact. The professional mirror cassettes are made in that fashion for a reason.

      This is the initial state - the M300 is very important tool for setting the tape guides. Then I use tension test tape for setting the take up and supply tension to 45 / 8 gr. Then I use central 1khz track for precise setting of the play head height. Then it fillows the azimuth test tape, then the Dolby level test tape. I use about 15 different original test tapes made by Sony, Abex and Teac... also TDK test tape for frequency responce check.
