Actually the interviewer is right. Even I felt while watching Kantara, that henceforth this is going to be the golden age of Kannada films and it reminded me of Malayalam films of the 1980s- the drama and even the comedy in it. That independent spirit was what made Malayalam films really stand out from how shabby it was in the 60s and 70s. I can see Kannada films going through the same phase. Also it was not just Priyadarshan, Mohanlal and gang but even directors like Sathyan Anthikad, Fazil, Balachandra Menon, Joshi, Padmarajan, etc were at the top of their game and literally set a tone for future Malayalam films in the early 80s. I see the three Shettys and other new directors of Kannada films in the same vein. Tamil and Telugu industries are a different breed altogether. Their whole focal point is on mass films with megastars. Malayalam films have never been quite like that and now Kannada films also don't pander to that mass entertainment (of course few exceptions are there like KGF but in general, I think both these film industries are best at content driven dramatic films).
