Finding the right music track is one of the most time consuming but rewarding parts of the editing process. The best feeling when it all clicks together
More videos like this please! Seeing how you make selections on music (both the inspiration source of tunes as well as trying them out on footage) is so helpful! Hearing you describe why it is or isn’t working is really helpful for those of trying to train our ear to see what works well 😊
what I really don't like about choosing "free to use" background music is that you need to do a lot of research to get some good ones. but if you don't want to, you can just purchase some free stock music websites. (and i couldn't spend money on it)
The rollercoaster of emotions i got i was feeling exactly what you portrayed i love having a good track over something and it fitting just absolutely perfect
It's so good on the borderless series, i like how she used it to evoke happiness then sadness in the next episode. So talented. tnx for pointing it out.
Music is absolutely king, the right track at the right place in your video will take you from a few thousand views to millions... music evokes emotion. Emotional engagement will keep your retention high, thus pleasing Mr "Al Gore, Rhythm". I use Lickd.
Thank you so much for this. I have learned SO MUCH from watching your channel, and one of my favorite things is watching how happy you are when you make this stuff. :)
Dude Hayden thank you so much for introducing me to the Stranglers I've genuinely never heard of them until this video and holy crap I had to pause the video and add all the songs you used in my playlist this is amazing dude thank you!!
BROOOOOO the "one more kiss" song with the cut to explosion HIT SO HARDDDD, my mouth DROPPED!! That was amazing, idk how you realized that song would work, but it blew my mind. The only thing I would personally add is making the song more scratchy/radio sounding/ cutting out into nothing after the explosion. When it comes back in so clean after the impact, it kills the impact, it brings us back to the "its not so bad" feeling we had before the gravity of it hits with the explosion.
Hi there pricing is pretty simple as it is based on your scale but if you are starting up Members pay only $8 a track and membership costs $15 (So a total of $23). Buying a track without a membership is $30. You can cancel the membership whenever you like so the membership option is cheaper and also includes access to a huge stock library. As your VR30 goes up so does the pricing structure (but that is set by the record labels not us).
This was an AWESOME breakdown. I know it was on the back of a sponsored product, but you did an awesome job not just proving your point, but showing a bit of your process. Thank you!
Never Back Down is first movie that comes to mind where the soundtrack massively boosts the enjoyment of the movie (bad movie, great time, amazing soundtrack)
Hi Hayden, I never comment on videos but your idea that you explained for your documentary reminded me of a documentary/informational film called "The War Game" (1967). It was made by BBC in 1967 as a way to inform the public about the realities of nuclear war. I will warn you, it is quite disturbing, but it was made based on information from bombings during WWII and other tragedies in order to properly inform the public about the horrors of nuclear weapons. Most of it is dramatized because it is showing what WOULD happen, however it is still based in fact. You should check it out, it could be useful for research. Thanks for your awesome videos.
funny tip I noticed in this vid is hillier tends to start the audio of his next clip before the first ends so close that he's almost cutting himself off and I'm assuming that leads to better retention
I'm glad he made this video because as a RUclipsr that makes Shorts videos, i needed some insight on music picks. Some videos i made either got little views or would get hundreds depending on what i made. So i think i should pick my music a little more carefully before uploading the next time.
I don't make shorts but rather long form and man finding good songs is so hard for me I recently just picked up using soundcloud there is a bunch of stuff on there since I don't want to pay for any service and RUclipss music library sucks because there isnt a rated system so while there is a bunch of good songs there is also a bunch of bad songs
Bro, Alt-J is also one of my favorite band ever + I'm also a professionnal video editor and I learn so much in your channel, thanks for everything and have a nice day mate !
Despite this being a placement for lickd I would love to see more videos of you experimenting and talking through your reasoning behind changes and the final decision
I was thinking about the last sequence about the nuclear bomb and thought that "We'll meet again" by Vera Lynn could work as a music choice. I could be wrong as i have no experience in editing but it is a possible suggestion.
I’ve loved what you’ve been able to do with LICKD, but what I have to ask as an amateur filmmaker is can it be used in film festivals, or is the license only for RUclips?
The licences are currently only for social use, but if you drop our support team a line they may be able to help you out with something a little more bespoke as we also licence music for brands and games.
Well HIllier, I really enjoyed this video. Music DOES set the tone... I hope "someday" I'll get good at editing. I'll certainly check out the music site...And as always, thank you for the great tips. Take Care~~~
This was a very interesting video. I loved how the different choices of music could help elevate the footage and make you feel some emotions that wouldn't be possible without licensed music.
For the Barbie movie edit, how did you keep the audio of the girl’s dialogue in the car separate from the music in the background? Did you have access to multiple audio tracks from the movie or did they mute the music during the car dialogue (I haven’t seen the movie ) ?
That first nuke song almost made me happy about the nuke 💀 But just wow, the Clare de lune has not only a beauty but a false sense of security that adds an eeriness to it that just work perfectly , I got chills edit = I paused the vid to say this comment and then when I continued you literately said exactly the same thing, lol and one more kiss was like total wall-e vibes and its funny, the explosion made me almost jump with this song even though I had already seen it I think that's due to the extreme contrast in vibes every time I Edit this comment you add another song lol, but in all seriousness that end of the world song has the best combination of vibes from all the songs you tried
You know what, I love your channel and videos, and you just improved the quality of my day 😂🌷💖 It's funny, cuz I have nothing to do with editing (although I do know basic stuff). It's your approach, you could life coach that 😂 You just made me think about finding some sound designing course (which is also funny cuz I alredy have a job 😂). Anyways! Have a nice evening and thank you, stay awesome 🌷🧚💖
I know someone who wants to learn, I recommend your course but can’t find the pope in the pool video you made. That one is a great hook for your course! Did you remove it??
He did and he said this on X: “Since I am freelancing again and now entering a larger collaborative field, the industry standard is Premiere.” Honestly I thought DaVinci is also the standard
Off topic here, but do you have any video on how to do proper zoom in zoom out on talking head videos? Thank you and listening to the kinks as we speak.
Jump cuts, humans hear before they see, using that knowledge you can make the audio come in 1 second or a few millaseconds before the visual, mess around with it and see what you get

Thanks so much for the awesome content Hayden. Watching how you engage with the music, we help provide access to, and how you create with it makes all our hard work worthwhile. We are only a small team here at Lickd but if you keep making awesome content like this then we will keep fighting to get all creators access to the best music.
even though i really like using music to create emotion and shit like that (like the one you did you ryan trahan). nowdays i like to think to myself "it's not that deep". cause most times its not and worrying about it just make the video slower for no reason
I have an editing class! Sign up here: hayden-hillier-smith.mykajabi.com/edit-like-an-artist
Bravo! 👏 So many editors severely underestimate how important music is to the entire storytelling process
If you underestimate music, you shouldn’t be an editor l.
Music is KEY
His facial expression show exactly why were all editors
Finding the right music track is one of the most time consuming but rewarding parts of the editing process. The best feeling when it all clicks together
It's always a joy watching someone who enjoys his work. I'm really happy to have found Hayden and his videos. I appreciate his work and style a lot!

Hayden looks like a baby getting a new toy whenever he tries out a new song 😂😂
The rollercoaster of emotions i got i was feeling exactly what you portrayed i love having a good track over something and it fitting just absolutely perfect
I completely admire how you make advert videos so interesting 😂😂😂
When Hayden used Warm Foothills it really felt special. It really evokes emotion especially when Natalie Lynn uses this in one of her vlogs.
exactly what i was thinking, i absolutely love that opening sequence in her video with simon
@@tape02 whats the title of her video? Would love to watch that again
It's so good on the borderless series, i like how she used it to evoke happiness then sadness in the next episode. So talented. tnx for pointing it out.

Awesome, thanks for using us

that was fun!
thanks for the upload, man!

Wow! A master class in music and timing in 14 minutes. Thanks for this Mr. Smith!
watching this dude's channel alone is enough to make you a top tier filmmmaker, you're an inspiration bro ♥
0:59 my observation is that it felt like “the last of us” show/game theme music
You did not talk about pricing. How much does it actually cost to license a mainstream track?
Hi there pricing is pretty simple as it is based on your scale but if you are starting up Members pay only $8 a track and membership costs $15 (So a total of $23). The music change for Ryan Trahan was beautiful, it felt like a christmas movie, magical.
i never realized how important music was to make a video 10x better
Loved this video! was great being brought on the journey of testing things out to see if they work
This was fun to watch! Thank you Hayden! Beautiful as always!
This was an AWESOME breakdown. I know it was on the back of a sponsored product, but you did an awesome job not just proving your point, but showing a bit of your process. Thank you!
How much did they pay you to make this video XD
At 8:09 point, that was my pay-off! Man what a video you've made! hahah
This is a masterclass in scoring! Thank you!
Alternate title: Hillier vibes to music
Never Back Down is first movie that comes to mind where the soundtrack massively boosts the enjoyment of the movie (bad movie, great time, amazing soundtrack)
It's the contrast for me.. sound designer is really important! Thanks for this man.. big fan!
Wow this was a fantastic video. You are doing god’s work, Hayden!
Big thumbs up! 👍 Loved this video🤘
You’re right Hayden. There was such an obvious ad that the creators had to make to pay the bills.
Hi Hayden, I never comment on videos but your idea that you explained for your documentary reminded me of a documentary/informational film called "The War Game" (1967). Horrifyingly beautiful - first the goosebumps then the tears
funny tip I noticed in this vid is hillier tends to start the audio of his next clip before the first ends so close that he's almost cutting himself off and I'm assuming that leads to better retention
9:16 recommend using Nuclear grave yard or Mars Bringer of war.
Thanks for this content. I just started using yur advice and keep improving. I bet others feel the same.
What an utterly fabulous idea for a video.
Ryan Trahan thing is fire but I feel like to each creator have their own style
I'm glad he made this video because as a RUclipsr that makes Shorts videos, i needed some insight on music picks. Some videos i made either got little views or would get hundreds depending on what i made. So i think i should pick my music a little more carefully before uploading the next time.

Adooooooooooooore your vidz!!!
For the rocket scene I also would’ve tried “Vera Lynn - We’ll Meet Again” because of the lyrics having to do with war and its old timey sounding.
I loooove that Fallout Music Concept and with “war… war never changes…”
You gotta make some more vids soon. It's so fun watching these!!
This video already helped me by just being posted

Love that this is a roast combined with a branded video
I did this with my "Symphony in mud"-video. Enjoy!
The fallout idea was just incredible, chefs kiss 🤌
I think the Bladerunner track was actually perfect
This was a very interesting video. I loved how the different choices of music could help elevate the footage and make you feel some emotions that wouldn't be possible without licensed music.
Amusingly “End of the World” is also a Fallout track of choice
1:12 made me smile.. I fucking love alt-J!
How about Eve of Destruction as the song? I was looking forward to a tutorial on choosing the right song in a video
The fallout analogy was spot on.
Way to go, Hayden!
I love your video man! keep going
Its crazy how good Fallouts concept is even if it doesn't work for what your doing.
For the Barbie movie edit, how did you keep the audio of the girl’s dialogue in the car separate from the music in the background? Did you have access to multiple audio tracks from the movie or did they mute the music during the car dialogue (I haven’t seen the movie ) ?
The Sharon van Etten song gave me goosebumps.
That first music taking me to the penny challenge
amazing vid!
ok, i love you.
You know it's a good day when Hayden makes a post💪🔥
That first nuke song almost made me happy about the nuke 💀
But just wow, the Clare de lune has not only a beauty but a false sense of security that adds an eeriness to it that just work perfectly , I got chills
edit = I paused the vid to say this comment and then when I continued you literately said exactly the same thing, lol
and one more kiss was like total wall-e vibes and its funny, the explosion made me almost jump with this song even though I had already seen it
I think that's due to the extreme contrast in vibes
every time I Edit this comment you add another song lol, but in all seriousness that end of the world song has the best combination of vibes from all the songs you tried
I realli loved the end,
Great video. Glad you tried The Stranglers too
My first reaction was "how dare you critique Ryan Trahan"...and then you elevated his work seeing fierce. Amazing.

Enjoyed. Super tips......I'm not good enough to add music to my diasterpieces .

Jump cut stands for making a J with the footage,
At least i now know that other people make THAT face also, once they find the perfect song for their editing :D Thanks for the fun video :)
Well done Hayden, well done 👊🏼🔥
Bro you saving me❤️
How do you cut out the music but keep audio in the clips you re-edited?
Bro got me hooked soo bad
I'm curious about how did you avoid copyright claims with some of the songs used in Logan's 99 Originals video O.O
Check the description of that video, they were all licensed through LICKD
