In this video, you'll learn from this basic overview of DNP3 protocol, including the kind of data it can contain and how you can use it. You'll see what industries use DNP3, the 3 different outstation types, and how masters bring data together and present it to you. You'll also get specific examples of masters and an RTU that acts as a DNP3 concentrator.

I have worked on DNP3, but this video helped me fill some gaps in my knowledge. I wish this video was there in 2013. Thanks a lot.

Your content has elaborated how Scada communicated with outstations specifically downstream and upstream perhaps missing major part of DNP3 which is "Unsolicited Response". Generally, where Scada sends poll request to outstation and to that outstation sends requested data but in DNP3 outstation will send data upstream to master without waiting for poll request.
Then comes timestamping and gathering multiple time slicing, where outstation can timestamp and gather multiple time slicing of data and post conditions are meet this chunk of data it assembled and sent over master .
    Finally, Scada disassembles the data.

The examples you cite can be done with a variety of protocols - I believe DNP3 is unique in that it timestamps the data allowing for many timeslices of data to be gathered between polls, then sent over radio as a chunk and dissembled on the SCADA side. Have you done a video on that process?

Good job man. Was really helpful in understanding the DNP3 concept. Appreciate the effort you put into making the video.

No problem! Thanks for the feedback. I make a lot of "deeper" videos focused on SCADA product evaluation, but I think it's important to have introductory tutorials on protocols like DNP3 for beginners as well.

It took a fair amount of effort, indeed. Having good slides always pays off for the viewer, I think. What kind of work do you do with DNP3/SCADA?

Thanks, Thomas! There can be so many different protocols involved in modern SCADA. I try to break them down enough where you can make good decisions, without burying you in detail. I always appreciate the feedback. -Andrew

Awesome. Glad to hear it was useful. I had to go through a similar learning curve myself. I knew networks and even other monitoring protocols like SNMP, but DNP3 was mostly new to me. -Andrew

Thanks for the video! We are studying the difference between the DNP3 and IEC 61850 communication protocols for a 5th year Electrical Engineering project. Can you comment on any differences between these two?

      Hi, Eddie.
We work much more with DNP3 than IEC 61850, but I took a few minutes to educate myself on the key differences so I could answer your question. It looks like there are many of the same dynamics in play here as I've seen with other "this one or that one?" protocol and transport decisions.
Namely: (1) DNP3 is older, "destined to be replaced by IEC 61850", but is stubbornly refusing to budge, largely because (2) DNP3 is entrenched, so people know how to use it (particularly in the United States), but also because (3) IEC 61850 requires much more bandwidth than DNP protocol.
In short, IEC 61850 is the "new hotness" with a lot of promising functionality. SCADA infrastructure, however, takes a very long time to evolve. If a new technology was universally accepted for 100% of new SCADA installations, the old one would still be operating for decades until the last holdout finally had to replace it. This is reinforced in this DNP3-IEC battle, because older transports and bandwidths make transitioning to IEC 61850 even more difficult.
Oddly enough, we built our business largely on offering creative translation/mediation solutions to address this slow evolution. Our fellow manufacturers seem to lose interest in the "old" protocol much more quickly than users do. One of my clients perhaps said it best: "I bought your equipment to make my 30-year-old equipment talk to my 10-year-old equipment, and to make both of those talk to my brand-new equipment."
Here are some of the articles I found that address your question:
      www.elp.com/articles/powergrid_international/print/volume-14/issue-5/features/dnp-vs-iec-skirmish-in-the-substation.html
      www.linkedin.com/pulse/comparisons-scada-protocols-power-systems-udara-perera
Best of luck with your project. As you (inevitably) encounter new questions as you dig deeper into it, please ask again.
      Best regards,
      Andrew
